Madame Broode,Super Mario Odyssey

Madame Broode is the manager of theBroodals, a group of evil, rabbit-like wedding planners originating from the Moon appearing inSuper Mario Odyssey, which are hired byBowser to plan the wedding betweenPeach and himself. Madame Broode is a large, female rabbit with hair alternating between turquoise and blue that curls at the ends, wearing a red dress and hat resemblingPauline's concert clothes as well as a pearl necklace on which, in the first encounter, theMulti Moon Mario needs to power theOdyssey is used as a pendant. She is the ruler of Rabbit Ridge in theDark Side of theMoon, though she is never seen there. She owns and controls a golden petBig Chain Chomp that she calls "Chain Chompikins", who has its own respective hat similar to Madame Broode's.

Madame Broode shares some similarities to Bowser, such as general design, particularly in the muzzle shape, facial/cranial structure and spiked wristbands, as well as the fact that she uses her face as a figurehead for the Broodals'airship and theRoboBrood, while her minions somewhat invoke theKoopalings. Despite being the Broodals' boss, she is never seen interacting with them.

History[edit]

Super Mario Odyssey[edit]

Mario fighting Madame Broode and Chain Chompikins

InSuper Mario Odyssey, Madame Broode is introduced in theCascade Kingdom. During her fight withMario, Madame Broode attacks with Chain Chompikins. She allows it to lunge forward, and since she is holding the other end of the chain, she is pulled along. The path of each lunge is indicated by arrows before it occurs. While those arrows can be displayed outside of the barrier surrounding the ring, Chain Chompkins does not go through it. Madame Broode shifts a bit as Chain Chompkins aims, generally staying out of the way of the Chain Chomp, but they can collide which staggers the both of them for a second. If Chain Chompkins hits Mario, it comes to a stop, unlike normal Chain Chomps. Mario can jump on the Chain Chomp to briefly stun it, forcing it to re-select a direction to attack in. Therocks in the arena can be broken to receiveHearts.

To defeat Madame Broode, Mario has tocapture the Chain Chomp withCappy. It is wearing a sunhat, so first the hat has to be knocked off. Madame Broode gets angry when Mario captures Chain Chompkins, alternating between clenching her free hand and chasing Mario and taking a single swipe at him. She stops to rest then attacks again. Getting hit forces Mario out of the Chain Chomp. The player should run away from her withLeft Stick, thus winding up the chain. When the chain is stretched to maximum length, Madame Broode is stuck using both hands to hold the chain, allowing Mario to send Chain Chompikins flying at her by releasingLeft Stick to score a hit. If the chain slackens, Madame Broode will return to attacking Mario. Alternatively, the player can shake the controller to perform short dashes to stretch the chain. These dashes are fast enough that they can max out the chain's length even while Madame Broode is pursuing Mario.

After being hit, Madame Broode picks up Chompikins, then throws it at Mario while it spins. The range of this attack is also indicated by arrows. While spinning, the Cap Throw has no effect on it. She then pulls the Chain Chomp back and repeats the pattern. This time, after capturing Chain Chompkins, she does not stop to clench her fists. She swipes at Mario twice, then gets tired, then starts again. After being hit, Broode turns red and her eyes turn yellow. She throws Chain Chompkins again. Now, when Chain Chompikins is captured, she chases and swipes three times before getting tired. After each hit, they drop sixteencoins. After the third hit, they are defeated. Both Madame Broode and Chain Chompkins disappear in a cloud of smoke, with Broode leaving behind herMulti Moon.

She is fought a second time in theUnderground Moon Caverns as the first boss in theMoon Kingdom, where she attacks Mario out of revenge for both her earlier encounter with him and his defeat of all the Broodals. This time, Chain Chompikins wears three top hats, five in the last phase, and Madame Broode attacks more when Mario takes control of the Chomp, but the fight is otherwise unchanged. After they are defeated, they leave behind sixteen coins. After this encounter, although she does not appear in Rabbit Ridge, where each of the Broodals is fought, it is possible to fight her again by re-entering the Underground Moon Caverns. This appearance is more selective than other boss rematches. In order to fight her, the Moon Kingdom has to be loaded again either through leaving and returning or through loading the save file.

Notes[edit]

  • As the boss of theBroodals, Madame Broode shares several traits with them, but is somewhat different in a number of ways. Unlike them, she has her own battle theme (though it is an arrangement of the original Broodal boss theme) and the Broodals' intro music does not play at her encounter.
  • When Madame Broode throws Chain Chompikins, it resembles a yo-yo trick called "Walk the Dog," a nod to the fact Chain Chomps are known to act like dogs.
  • She is the only boss in the game not to have an edited post-game rematch. However, she can still be re-fought at any time in the Underground Moon Caverns.
