Lumalee,Super Mario Galaxy

Lumalees,[1] also referred to asSalesman Lumas,[2] are light-blueHungry Lumas introduced inSuper Mario Galaxy. In that game, a Lumalee appears prior to boss battles in certaingalaxies. It transforms into either aLife Mushroom or a1-Up Mushroom, at the player's discretion, in exchange for 30Star Bits. Lumalees retain this role inSuper Mario Galaxy 2, but the game also includes Lumalees that transform intoChance Cubes instead. An imprisoned Lumalee, voiced in English byJuliet Jelenic, has a supporting role inThe Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Like the pink Hungry Lumas and the relatedComet Luma,[derived] Lumalees hold asenko hanabi in each hand: one with a Life Mushroom at the end, and another with a 1-Up Mushroom.

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

A Lumalee serves as a "shop", inSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport whereMario (orLuigi) can purchase either a Life Mushroom or a 1-Up Mushroom for 30 Star Bits. Lumalees can be found in several galaxies and tend to appear before boss battles. Once Mario has made his choice of purchase, a Lumalee is fed the right number of Star Bits automatically and proceeds to transform into the mushroom of his choosing for him to collect. Because of this transformation, Mario can buy only one item from a Lumalee per appearance in that playthrough of the stage.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

InSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport, Lumalees serve the same purpose as in the first game. In addition, after the player does certain missions, two Lumalees holding sticks withLucky Cubes on the end appear in a pipe that is on the left ear ofStarship Mario. The first Lumalee turns into a Chance Cube for 30 Star Bits. The second Lumalee turns into five Chance Cubes for 100coins. The possible outcomes from both Luma Shops' Chance Cubes are a single Star Bit, a 1-Up Mushroom, three 1-Up Mushrooms, and five 1-Up Mushrooms.

Mario Golf: World Tour[edit]

A Lumalee appears inMario Golf: World Tour, where it cameos during one of Rosalina's animations, specifically whenever she scores aneagle,albatross, orhole-in-one. Its color scheme slightly resembles that ofBaby Luma.

Mario Sports Superstars[edit]

Due toMario Sports Superstars reusing Rosalina's golf animations fromMario Golf: World Tour, Lumalee reappears in this game in the same capacity.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

Lumalee appears inThe Super Mario Bros. Movie and is the only Luma that appears in the film. In the English release of the movie, Lumalee is voiced by Juliet Jelenic, the daughter of the movie's co-directorMichael Jelenic.[3] Some of his sound effects, however, are reused voice clips of Lumas provided byYuya Takezawa. Jelenic explained in an interview that her voice was recorded as a placeholder, but it was ultimately used in the final release as they were unable to find actors with a voice that provided the desired dissonance.[4]

Lumalee is one ofBowser's captives, alongside Luigi, thePenguin King, somepenguins, and someGoombas, as well as theKongs later on in the film. He has a child's voice and a somewhat twisted and nihilistic personality. The Penguin King tells Luigi to ignore him and that he is "cute but [cuckoo]". He is shown annoying the other prisoners, especially the Penguin King, with his cheerfully suicidal demeanor. He exclaims that "time, like hope, is an illusion" and that death is the only escape from their imprisonment, much to the despair of the other prisoners. Lumalee is later excited to die in thelava at Bowser's royal wedding along with the other prisoners, but he is freed from his imprisonment by Mario andDonkey Kong, which visibly dismays him. After the end of the film, Lumalee appears andtells the audience that since the film is over, all that is left is them and the "infinite void". He then plays theGround Theme fromSuper Mario Bros. on a saxophone to start off theend credits music.

A figure of a Lumalee appeared in a line ofThe Super Mario Bros. Movie toys released byMcDonald's as part of aHappy Meal promotion outside Europe and Oceania. The release of this toy, timed with the film's original December 2022 release, predated any official, explicit announcement of a Lumalee character appearing in the movie. The character was later revealed officially in the movie's third and final trailer.[5]

On theofficial website forSuper Mario Bros. Plumbing, inspecting the website's console output after visiting its faux 404 error page shows anASCII version of a Lumalee.

Mario Tennis Fever[edit]

Lumalee appears inMario Tennis Fever as an alternate color variation for Luma, marking its first appearance in theMario Tennis series and first appearance as a playable character in general. As a result, it is referred to simply as "Luma" in-game and uses the same voice clips and animations as Luma. It is unlocked after playing fifteen tennis matches.

Naming[edit]

Lumalees are first named in theSuper Mario Galaxy trading cards, promoting the release of the game, made by EnterPlay. InSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2 themselves, the characters are unnamed, with the word "Lumalee" instead being part of the jingle used to introduce their shops: "♪ Lumalee! Lumabop! Welcome to the Luma Shop! ♪" Their original Japanese dialogue instead features them singing 「ピカリン」 (pikarin) instead, an onomatopoeia for twinkling.[6] In other languages aside from Canadian French and Brazilian Portuguese, their jingle does not include the words "Luma" or "Lumalee" at all.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]

ThePrima strategy guide forSuper Mario Galaxy 2 refers to the characters as "Salesman Lumas", in accordance to their name in the Japanese manual for that game.[19] "Lumalee" as a name would then return with the release ofThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, where the blue Luma is named as such in the film's credits.
