TheLuigi Block is a type ofblock that appears inNew Super Luigi U. Despite being named afterLuigi, it featuresMario'semblem. The block appears at the beginning of thelevels, but only afterBowser is defeated. Hitting the block allows the player to switch to the physics ofNew Super Mario Bros. U, with lowerjumps and better traction. It does not affectNabbit and does not appear if he is used in the single-player mode of the originalWii U version. The first time the player hits the block, a message appears, describing the block's effects.
If the player hits the Luigi Block for the first time in a play session (subsequently triggering the message describing the block's effects) before the "time warning" sound effect finishes playing, the sound effect starts over after the player has finished reading the message.
The block returns in theNew Super Luigi U version ofNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, retaining its effects. Due to Nabbit being playable in theNew Super Mario Bros. U version ofNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the block now affects Nabbit and appears if he is used in the single-player mode.
