“Here's a great spot to land on! The Lucky Space! It sends you down a secret path!”
MC Ballyhoo,Mario Party 8

TheLucky Space is aspace appearing in theMario Party series, first appearing inMario Party 8. In that game, each Lucky Space will transport the player to an otherwise inaccessible area of the board, normally a straight path ofBlue Spaces with three coins on each. This path usually leads to a freeStar, after which the player will return to the main board, although the path and rewards depend on the board being played.

InMario Party 9,Mario Party: Island Tour,Mario Party 10, Lucky Spaces are more similar toEvent Spaces. They often reward players who land on them with eitherMini Stars or SpecialDice Blocks, or may activate events on the board. Additionally,Mario Party 9 introduces a negative equivalent, theUnlucky Space.

Starting inSuper Mario Party, Lucky Spaces are more numerous and simply reward the player who landed on them, usually with freecoins oritems.

History[edit]

Mario Party 8[edit]

InMario Party 8, most boards have a single Lucky Space, the shape of which differs between boards. Each Lucky Space brings the player to a different route depending on the board. The coins on each Lucky Route only respawn when all players on the route have exited the area. However, the free Star given at the end of certain routes respawns each time a player earns one. Due to the Duel Battle and Star Battle Arena modes having different win requirements from Battle Royale and Tag Battle, Lucky Spaces are the only Spaces that do not appear in those modes.

InDK's Treetop Temple, if players land on the Lucky Space, they will ride a floating platform to a large coin route platform behind the main board. On the large platform is a route consisting of Blue Spaces, each with threecoins on them. At the end of the platform is a free Star and aWarp Pipe that will send the player back to the start of the board.

InGoomba's Booty Boardwalk, if players land on this board's Lucky Space, they will ride on aDolphin and be transported to a small island west of the main path for free. On the island is a small route of Blue Spaces, each with three coins. At the end of the route is a hugeTreasure Chest, guarded by twoGoomba idols. When a player reaches them, they will unwillingly give the player a free Star and then order some gulls to return the player to the main board, on top of the Lucky Space.

InKing Boo's Haunted Hideaway, if players land on this board's Lucky Space, they will go upstairs to the second floor in the mansion. This Lucky Route contains a small area of Blue Spaces, each with three coins. At the end of the area is a Warp Pipe, which leads directly toKing Boo. They still have to trade 10 coins to get the Star from King Boo, and King Boo will still shuffle the board if the Star is earned this way. If someone happens to be on the second floor when King Boo shuffles the board, they will be sent back to the start, making their progress a complete loss. Due to the randomized layout of the board, the Lucky Space can be located in any one of the main rooms, although there will only be one Lucky Space at a time.

InShy Guy's Perplex Express, landing on the Lucky Space will drop the player off atPayday Waystation, which is a one-way route consisting of five Blue Spaces, each with three coins. At the end of the route is aShy Guy, who will give the player a free Star. Two other Shy Guys will then return the player to the back of the train via a handcar.

Luigi lands on the Lucky Space in Koopa's Tycoon Town
A Koopa offering Luigi a ride to one of the Lucky Route.

Unlike other boards,Koopa's Tycoon Town has two Lucky Spaces, and each result in aKoopa Troopa pulling up in a car to take the player to a place in town where the road is "paved with gold". If the player lands on the Lucky Space on the west side of the board, the Koopa Troopa will take them to a route to the west of the board, while landing on the Lucky Space on the north side of the board will have them taken to a route east of the board. Both Lucky Routes consist of a path of either four of five Blue Spaces, each with three coins. In the middle of each Lucky Route is a three-star hotel that can be owned for a starting investment of only one coin. When the end of one of these areas is reached, the player will cross the road back to the main board. NeitherBowser norBandit can steal coins from either of these two hotels, which guarantees full ownership if 100 coins are invested, andDonkey Kong is only able to deposit into these hotels if all the main hotels already have 100 coins deposited into them by the player who landed on his space. However, if another player lands on the same Lucky Space, they can invest in the hotel and possibly steal it.

InBowser's Warped Orbit, landing on the Lucky Space will cause a spaceship to land next to the player. It will open up revealingCaptain Shy Guy, who takes the player toShy Guy's Space Buffet. The buffet restaurant has a small route of Blue Spaces, each with three coins. The route does not lead to any Stars, unlike the Lucky Spaces on the other five boards. Instead, the player gets to collect three free pieces of eitherBullet Candy orBowser Candy by passing? Candies before coming back to the Lucky Space.

When Bowser is in control of King Boo's Haunted Hideaway or Shy Guy's Perplex Express via theBowser Space, his theme plays in the Lucky Routes instead of the standard Lucky Route theme.

Mario Party 9[edit]

Lucky Space
Lucky Space inMario Party 9

Lucky Spaces also appear inMario Party 9. In this game, they trigger different events based on where they are placed. If the Lucky Space is near a Blue Warp Pipe, then the player jumps into an area with Mini Star Spaces. The player then rolls aDice Block, with a higher number leading to aMini Star Space which gives out moreMini Stars. If the Lucky Space is in front of aToad House, the player enters the Toad House and has a chance to get items by picking shuffling cards.Unlucky Spaces also appear and serve as a negative counterpart to Lucky Spaces. When the Captain lands on an Unlucky Space near a Red Warp Pipe, they are warped to an area withMini Ztar Spaces.

OnBlooper Beach, three of the Lucky Spaces towards the end of the board will trigger another event that causes Dolphins to appear taking the vehicle to Star Island (and the captain gets three Mini Stars on the way). The island, shaped as a star as its name implies, consists of a circular path made up of aDash Space, threeDice Block Spaces and another Lucky Space. There are also two sets of three Mini Stars in between some of the spaces. The center of the island consists of ten Mini Stars. Players take turns attempting to land on the Lucky Space which allows the captain to obtain the ten Mini Stars in the center and return to the main path. The Dice Spaces here will never trigger an event (such as free Mini Stars) or a minigame. The island can be revisited as many times as the captain lands on the Lucky Spaces on the main path, which is infinite due to the placement of theBack Space just before the Bowser Gate.

Mario Party: Island Tour[edit]

Event Space from Mario Party: Island Tour
Lucky Space inMario Party: Island Tour

Lucky Spaces (calledEvent Space (blue) in the British English version) return inMario Party: Island Tour. OnPerilous Palace Path, two Lucky Spaces appear, four and five spaces ahead of theThwomp challenge. If the player lands on one of the two spaces, they will take the cannon and skip nine to ten spaces ahead. There are also two Lucky Spaces onBowser's Peculiar Peak. Upon landing on one, the player can take theWarp Pipe and move a random number of spaces further away fromBowser, with numbers ranging from 1 to 6. When a player is 16 spaces or less from Bowser, the first one is changed to aBowser Space.

Mario Party 10[edit]

Lucky Spaces return inMario Party 10. In Mario Party mode, they usually allow the player to hit one of threeBrick Blocks containing two, four, or six Mini Stars, but the events can vary depending on the board, though they will always allow the player to obtain Mini Stars. In Bowser Party mode, they allow the player to hit one of three Brick Blocks containing zero, one, or twoHearts for each player.

Super Mario Party[edit]

Lucky Space in Super Mario Party
Lucky Space inSuper Mario Party

Lucky Spaces return inSuper Mario Party, and appear as green spaces with an image of a four-leafed clover. In this game, when a player lands on a Lucky Space, a list of five possible events appears that are spun through and the player stops the spinning to choose an event. If the player is in 3rd or 4th place (or on the losing team in the case of Partner Party), then the player is more likely to have the more beneficial events, such as receiving 5 coins instead of 3. The following is a list of possible options a player can get upon spinning the wheel:

  • Receive (3 or 5) coins.
  • Receive (7 or 10) coins. This event is exclusive toKamek's Tantalizing Tower.
  • Make a rival lose (5 or 10) coins.
  • Make the rival team lose (5 or 10) coins.: This event is exclusive to Partner Party.
  • Receive aDash Mushroom
  • Receive several Dash Mushrooms: This fills the player's inventory with up to 3 Dash Mushrooms.
  • Receive aGolden Dash Mushroom
  • Receive several Golden Dash Mushrooms: This fills the player's inventory with up to 3 Golden Dash Mushrooms.
  • Steal one ally from a rival: This event is exclusive to Mario Party.
  • Make coins rain around you.: This event is exclusive to Partner Party.
  • Steal an ally from the rival team: This event is exclusive to Partner Party.

Mario Party Superstars[edit]

Lucky Spaces appear inMario Party Superstars, retaining the image of the four-leafed clover fromSuper Mario Party but being blue instead of green. They are much more common in this game, replacing approximately a quarter of Blue Spaces from the original versions of the boards. The following is a list of possible options a player can get upon spinning the wheel:[1]

Lucky Spaces will not give items in the final turn.

Super Mario Party Jamboree /Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV[edit]

Lucky Spaces return inSuper Mario Party Jamboree and itsNintendo Switch 2 port with identical functionality toMario Party Superstars. A minor visual change was made to the clover, changing the color from white to green. They are less common on the returning boardMario's Rainbow Castle, making up closer to one seventh of the total number of spaces than to one fifth like other boards. Lucky Spaces will only give coins in the final turn. One of the following events will occur when landing on a Lucky Space during Party Rules:[2][3]

If the game is set to Pro Rules, the player will instead receive either aDouble Dice or 10 coins according to the player's choice.[4] If it is the final turn, the player automatically receives 10 coins.
