Looking up[1] is a move that is sparingly used throughout various 2Dplatform games, appearing in theSuper Mario,Wario Land, andYoshi series. The move involves the player pressing the up button on the or pushing the left control stick away from them to make the player character look upwards vertically, with the horizontal direction depending on that of the character. Looking up is often used to throw objects upwards.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario World[edit]
Looking up first appears inSuper Mario World, in which it can be performed ifMario orLuigi stands still without ridingYoshi or using aPower Balloon. The move's main purpose in this game is tothrow aKoopa Shell, an upside-downGaloomba, or aMechakoopa upwards by looking up with
and releasing,[2] which can triggerblocks and defeat enemies above. In addition, Mario or Luigi will look upwards when ascending in aLakitu's Cloud. Looking up cannot be done if the player is standing in front of aYellow Door, abeanstalk, or afence, due to pressing up on the
being mapped to using those objects.
Looking up is introduced inYoshi's Island 1, when the player can earn a1-Up Mushroom by throwing aRed Shell upwards into aRotating Block. The move is explained to the player in one of the game'sTourist Tips, found in the level's secondMessage Block. Using this action in this context comes back into play duringthe game's final boss, when the player must throw Mechakoopas ontoBowser's head to damage him.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
This section is astub. Please considerexpanding it to include any missing information.
Looking up reappears inNew Super Mario Bros. 2. Unlike other appearances, it does not have any direct effect on Mario's throwing mechanic.
Super Mario Maker series[edit]
InSuper Mario Maker, the move is exclusive to theSuper Mario World game style, and serves the same purpose as it originally did in said game. Mario is also able to look up in the game'sNintendo 3DS port,Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and itsNintendo Switch sequelSuper Mario Maker 2. In the latter game, Luigi,Toad, andToadette can also look up.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
Looking up returns inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, in which it serves the same function as inSuper Mario World. The move's inclusion in this game marks the first time thatPrincess Peach,Daisy,Yellow Toad, andNabbit can look up. Several alterations are made to the move, such as the added ability to look up whilst moving or holding an object. IfElephant Mario throws an object upwards and juggles it by swinging his trunk whilst looking up enough times, the object will explode intocoins. If the player looks up while inGoomba form orWubba form during aWonder Effect, their eyes will move around in the same direction that the is pointed in, which also applies tocrouching.
Wario Land series[edit]
Looking up can be done in some games in theWario Land series starting inWario Land II, allowingWario to jump higher or catch certain falling objects. Unlike Mario and Yoshi, Wario's head continues facing forward, though his pupils look upward. He also takes a slightly different stance while doing this. InWario Land: Super Mario Land 3, he instead simply lifts his arm up, which can be used to spawn a10-Coin to throw, though he uses a "looking up" pose in an unrelated context in theCoin Game.
Yoshi series[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[edit]
Looking up appears inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. AsYoshis are the playable characters, they look up instead of Mario. Looking up moves the camera upwards to see upper areas that are located above Yoshi. Similarly to how items can be thrown upward in theSuper Mario series, looking up allows Yoshis toswallow objects and enemies above them or to spit those things out at an upwards angle.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
The move returns inYoshi's New Island. It serves the same purpose as in its predecessor, albeit with the option to use the instead of the

Yoshi's Woolly World /Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
InYoshi's Woolly World andPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, looking up does not scroll the camera but still allows for spitting objects, enemies, andyarn balls upward. New functionality for looking up is introduced here: if Yoshireadies a yarn ball whilst looking up, the aiming cursor for throwing the yarn ball is set to be straight up and does not move. If Yoshi stops looking up while having a yarn ball readied, then the cursor will start moving as normal. Since straight upwards is the largest angle Yoshi can throw a yarn ball in, then if directional input stops, the cursor always starts moving downward.
In relation to looking up, if Yoshi has readied a yarn ball and the aiming cursor is moving downward, then pressing
causes the cursor to start moving upward instead. If
is held when the cursor is pointing straight up, then it will stop moving in the same way the cursor does not move if the player continues to look up while readying a yarn ball.
If tilt controls for throw style are active, then
has no effect on the aiming cursor.

Notes[edit]
- Mario looks up in the opening ofSuper Mario Bros. 3 after being hit on the head by several objects; despite this, the move cannot be performed in standard gameplay, and its sprite is stored in a different graphics bank than gameplay sprites are.
- Mario also looks up in the opening cutscene ofMario is Missing!
