Leaf piles^[1] orpiles of leaves^[2]^[3] are commonly found in autumn-themed stages within theSuper Mario andDonkey Kong franchises. They commonly release anitem if interacted with in a certain way.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

InSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switch port, leaf piles appear on theGold Leaf Galaxy's starting planet.Spinning into a leaf pile gives the player character either threeStar Bits or acoin.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Leaf piles also appear in theMario Kart series, first in the courseMaple Treeway, introduced inMario Kart Wii and returning inMario Kart 7,Mario Kart Tour,Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, andMario Kart World. They are also in the autumn variation of theMario Kart 8 andMario Kart 8 Deluxe courseAnimal Crossing. In these games, leaf piles act similarly tocrates, disappearing when hit by an item or racer and dispensingBananas,coins,Mushrooms, and, occasionally,Super Stars. Unlike crates, however, leaf piles do not slow racers down when they hit them. They reappear a short amount of time after being hit. In time trials, they remain in their usual locations but do not dispense any items.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[edit]

Large piles of leaves appear inDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze as interactable objects inHorn Top Hop. TheKongs can stand and walk on top of them as on ground, butrolling into one causes it to scatter, which most commonly releases an item such as a banana or aBanana Coin. One pile in particular hides a horn that releases aPointy Tucks and aPuzzle Piece in an alternative fashion when uncovered.
