King Totomesu[1][2] is a largesphinx- or lion-like creature and the ruler of theBirabuto Kingdom fromSuper Mario Land. He resembles aGao but, unlike this enemy, is capable of moving in addition to breathing fire.

History[edit]

Super Mario Land[edit]

King Totomesu is first boss ofSuper Mario Land, and he is fought at the end of the pyramid inWorld 1-3. Similarly to thefake Bowsers inSuper Mario Bros., King Totomesu attacks by trying tojump on and shoot fire at Mario. King Totomesu can be defeated by touching theswitch behind him or by shooting fiveSuperballs at him. The reward for defeating King Totomesu is 5000 points and being allowed to progress into theMuda Kingdom.

Super Mario Kodansha manga[edit]

King Totomesu is the first boss faced in theSuper Mario Land manga. UsingMecha Kuribō's sensors, Mario discovers he needs to hit him with five Superballs, but only manages to land four hits, before the boss swipes at him, making him lose the Superballs. Mario attempts to stomp on him, but discovers he cannot damage him this way. Avoiding another claw swipe, Mario lands on the switch and King Totomesu explodes.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

InSuper Mario-kun, King Totomesu appears in the last chapter ofvolume 3 alongside otherSuper Mario Land enemies and bosses. He disguises himself asPrincess Peach in theBack Door room and gets rescued by Mario,Luigi, andYoshi. The heroes then flies away with the wingedMarine Pop out of theValley of Bowser. WhenBowser laughs at the heroes, confusing them, King Totomesu reveals himself. The boss quickly manages to get the upper hand, burning the heroes, who attempted to fight him withFire Flowers but ran out. Right when King Totomesu charges at them,Hiyoihoi and the moai appear, claiming Mario is their prey, and they start fighting for him, letting the heroes walk away.

Naming[edit]

「トトメス」(Totomesu) is akatakana rendering of the anglicized "Thutmose", a name common among royals and nobles inancient Egypt. Other spellings include「トゥトモス」(Tutomosu),「トゥトモセ」(Tutomose) or「ツートモーセ」(Tsūtomōse). "King Totomesu" may also incorporate "King Tut," sometimes written as「キング・トゥト」(Kingu Tuto) or「キング・トット」(Kingu Totto).
