Invisible
- Not to be confused withInvisibility, abadge fromSuper Mario Bros. Wonder.
- “Invisible! Attacks will now miss!”
- —Battle text,Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Invisible is a positive status effect in thePaper Mario series, theMario & Luigi series, andMario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. When affected, the character cannot be attacked; all attacks will go right through. In the case forMario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, the character invisible cannot be directly targeted, but can still take damage.
History[edit]
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
InPaper Mario, the invisible status is indicated by a speech bubble divided horizontally into black and white segments. A circle is also divided in half into black and white, with the white half on the black background and the black half on the white background. The entire symbol switches shades repeatedly.
TheRepel Gel item will make Mario invisible, andKooky Cookies andStrange Cakes have a chance to grant this status effect to their consumer.
The player can also useLady Bow'sOutta Sight ability to turn Mario and Bow invisible and avoid enemy attacks for a turn, but this can only be used once every two turns.
The only enemies to give the invisible status to its allies areGray Magikoopas and normalMagikoopas.Star Beam is capable of negating it on enemies.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
InPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door andits Nintendo Switch remake, theBoo's Sheet item replaces the Repel Gel. The indicator in the former game is a semitransparent smiling, blushing face, and a Boo's Sheet icon in the latter. Also, theLove Pudding recipe has a chance to cause the eater to become invisible. In addition, aBoo from the audience may appear and pass through anyone in battle, turning them invisible for one turn. The following enemies can turn themselves or their allies invisible:Green Magikoopas, Boos, normal Magikoopas,Dark Boos, andKammy Koopa. Special Moves such asEarth Tremor andArt Attack bypass this effect and still damage invisible enemies.
Similar to Lady Bow from the previous game,Vivian can also help Mario avoid damage from attacks by enemies, by using herVeil move to pull him into the shadows where they can hide.
Princess Peach, with the help ofTEC, becomes invisible, by creating an Invisibility Potion from other potions (theOrange,Red andBlue potions). She reverts to her normal state with the help of theGreen Potion. In contrast withMario's semitransparent appearance, Peach's body is completely invisible to the player (though she has to take off her clothes in order to be unnoticed, as the Invisibility Potion has no effect on them).
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
In theMario & Luigi series,Boo Biscuits are the main way to become invisible since their introduction inMario & Luigi: Dream Team, which can renderMario,Luigi,Bowser, andPaper Mario invincible for a short time. While invisible during battle, the user will not be able to attack until the effect wears off, however, andcounterattacks will not inflict any damage on enemies at all. Thus, its only purpose is to allow the player to practice defending against enemy attacks, without risk of the battle ending from either side being defeated.
InMario & Luigi: Brothership, Mario and Luigi no longer become transparent when using Boo Biscuits, though they remain invincible.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]
- “Won't trigger any enemy reaction attacks or chase behavior. Can't be attacked directly, but can still take incidental damage.”
- —Hero Info description,Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
The invisible effect appears inMario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, only from theSparkEthering, whose Power abilityUnseen makes the hero it is equipped to invisible for 1 (2 if upgraded to at least level 3) turn(s). While invisible, the hero cannot be directly targeted by enemies, but they can still take damage from attacks, usually by area attacks from hazards and enemies.
