Il Piantissimo is a human dressed as aPianta who appears inSuper Mario Sunshine. Similar toKoopa the Quick and theBig Penguin fromSuper Mario 64, he is raced as part of the missions he appears in, but unlike them, he is highly arrogant and unpleasant. He must be footraced byMario for aShine Sprite on three different occasions: thefifth episode ofGelato Beach, thefifth episode ofNoki Bay, and thesecond episode ofPianta Village. Il Piantissimo can use most of Mario's moves but cannot use any tactics involvingFLUDD. If Il Piantissimo reaches the flag first, Mario loses a life. When the player replays a completedepisode, Il Piantissimo is more difficult to beat, as he finishes the course slightly over the player's previous time.[1] The first ending screen, if not all 120 Shine Sprites are collected, shows Il Piantissimo looking atBowser Jr.'smagic brush on Gelato Beach.

Naming[edit]
Il Piantissimo's name is a portmanteau of "Pianta" and "-issimo" ("-est" or "very"). The word "il" is an Italian definite masculine article equivalent to "the".

Notes[edit]
- With his mask removed, Il Piantissimo's face resembles those ofThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time'srunning man and, by extension, thepostman fromThe Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. This can also be seen in gameplay by looking through the mask's eyeholes.
- Mario,Shadow Mario, and Il Piantissimo all use the same animations.
