Ice,[1][2] also referred to asice patches,[3]icy surfaces,[4] orfrozen surfaces, is one of the characterizing terrain elements ofsnow-themed levels in theSuper Mario franchise. In platforming titles, player characters have poor traction on ice and it makes it more likely for them to slide off the edge of terrain and intopits or damaging hazards. Typically there are means available to regain traction or make navigation more dynamic, such as thePenguin Suit orIce Skate.
Numerous icy objects have the same slippery property when stood on, includingIce Blocks,Ice Chunks, andIce Meteors. Unlike them, ice is a direct component of a level's landscape and can form a diversity of different shapes, includingslopes. Ice first appeared in the arcade gameMario Bros., and it would ultimately appear in the mainline series in isolation from objects like Ice Blocks inSuper Mario World.
History[edit]
This section is astub. Please considerexpanding it to include any missing information.Specifics:Wario andMario sports information if applicable anywhere. Make sure one does not conflate icy floors with the Ice Block, which has an article of its own. Please do not incorporate artificial ice hockey or skating rinks from games likeMario & Sonic. Those would be a little too far outside the scope of this article.
Mario Bros. series[edit]
Mario Bros.[edit]
Ice begins to appear in the lattermost stages in the arcade version ofMario Bros., where it makes thefloor slippery forMario andLuigi. With the exception of the first bonus level, all levels have floors made of ice.Freezies, originally referred to as Slipices, debuted in this game. They have the ability to self-destruct, which leaves the floor they were sliding along coated in ice. The icy floors would not return in subsequent remakes ofMario Bros. until the version included on theGame Boy Advance.
Punch Ball Mario Bros.[edit]
InPunch Ball Mario Bros., the first phase with icy platforms is phase 08, a bonus stage. Moving icy platforms are first seen in phase 13.
Mario Clash[edit]
Icy terrain begins to appear in later stages inMario Clash, where they reduce Mario's traction. They appear as early as phase 12.
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario World /Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]
Ice occurs in five levels withinSuper Mario World and itsGame Boy Advance remake. Like theground found inIce Land inSuper Mario Bros. 3, ice reduces Mario's (or Luigi's) traction, making it difficult to avoid running into hazards or timejumps.Yoshi also slides on the ice. It first appears in the underground levelDonut Secret 2, where it resembles a pale-blue cave floor. Some of the ice formSemisolid Platforms andSlopes, andSpike Tops cling to them like normal ground. This underground ice subsequently makes up the terrain in thesub-areas ofVanilla Dome 2,Vanilla Dome 3, andValley of Bowser 4. In theSpecial Zone levelAwesome, ice is above ground and resembles a pale-blue version of the normal ground tiles, and it is potentially covered in light snow. The ice forms concave depressions thatunshelled Koopas kick their shells into.
Super Mario 64 /Super Mario 64 DS[edit]
Traction is reduced while Mario is on ice and he has difficulty turning inSuper Mario 64, just likeSuper Mario World. It also stalls his momentum and can lead to imprecise jumps. Tiptoeing and crawling allows Mario to move with precision on ice but at the expense of speed. Unlike prior and subsequent appearances, the ice inSuper Mario 64 is almost entirely clear, similar to glass. Ice that is suspended above ground has realistic-looking icicles hanging off of its sides.Penguins are surefooted on ice.
Ice first appears around the base ofCool, Cool Mountain. The first example is a a frozen pond near theMother Penguin. This pond is not tied to anymissions in the originalNintendo 64 version of the game, but it does provide the player an opportunity to engage with it in a risk-free environment, as the pond is enveloped by solid ground. In theNintendo DS version, aPower Star appears under the pond during "Switch Star of Cool, Cool Mountain," which can be broken only by aGround Pound fromWario. Ice is otherwise impenetrable to Mario and the other two playable characters exclusive toSuper Mario 64 DS—Yoshi and Luigi. Ice also forms a narrow bridge leading to a Power Star in the mission "Mario's Super Wall Kick," where slipping forces Mario back to the ground.
Ice is more prevalent inSnowman's Land.Chill Bully is on a broad, flat arena overhangingfreezing water. He must be knocked-off in order to complete "Chill with the Bully." A bridge of ice appears near the summit of Snowman Mountain, where theSnowman itself tries blowing gusts ofwind in order to shake the player character off. He can only avoid being blown off by following the erratic movements of the Big Penguin on the bridge, who is unfazed by the wind, or byriding on top of its head.
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Ice patches are prominent in the snow-themedWorld 5 and in the Ice level in Mario Vs. Luigi mode inNew Super Mario Bros., where they appear alongsideIce Blocks. Unlike the blocks, ice patches make upground, slopes, and unusual bits of terrain. Enemies do not slip on the ice.Bully-like shelled enemies calledSnailicorns occur on the ice patches in some levels, and they slide back on the ice when attacked. Ice first appear in the underground-themedWorld 5-2, whereSpike Tops crawl around them. They subsequently appear in the boss room ofWorld 5-Tower, where Mario (or Luigi) fightsBowser Jr. Ice patches subsequently make up the downward slopes ofWorld 5-3, the terrain and narrow corridors ofWorld 5-B, and the floors ofWorld 5-
Castle. It also covers the floor of the boss room withPetey Piranha.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy, ice reduces Mario's (or Luigi's) traction if he tries to walk along it, which interferes with his momentum and trajectory if he jumps. Mario also has difficulty turning while on ice. However, shaking the or
causes Mario toskate, which allows him to move much faster and make sharper turns. Mario performs anAxel when he jumps that is shorter in height than his normal jumps, but maintains the fast momentum of the skates. Mostgalaxies that incorporate ice in the terrain emphasize the dynamic mechanics of skating.
Ice makes up large parts of the terrain in theFreezeflame Galaxy. The entirety of the ring-shaped starting planet is made of translucent ice. During "The Frozen Peak of Baron Brrr," a belly-slidingpenguin challenges Mario to a game of tag around this ring-shaped planet. Most ice occurs on the Freezy Peak, where it covers the surface of slides, floats, and the ground. The water around Freezy Peak isfreezing water, making traversal along the ice precarious. During "Frosty Cosmic Mario Race," Mario is challenged byCosmic Mario (orCosmic Luigi if playing as Luigi) to a race across icy floors suspended over empty space. Outside of the Freezeflame Galaxy, ice appears in a cold area of theToy Time Galaxy with ice cream and lollipoplifts. They make up the only stable ground of the ice sphere inBowser's Galaxy Reactor.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
Ice appears inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii in much of the same capacity as it did inNew Super Mario Bros. It makes up large swaths of the terrain in the snow-themedWorld 3, including narrow corridors, slopes, and platforms. Ice reduces the player character's traction, making precise platforming difficult. In the above-ground courses, ice is a vibrant blue and seems to have a thin layer of snow embedded on their surfaces. Underground, ice is a duller blue and has nothing coating their surfaces. The ceilings are often lined with damagingicicles that drop when the player character crosses underneath, exasperating the precariousness of the icy terrain.New Super Mario Bros. Wii introduces thePenguin form, which allows the player character to remain surefooted on ice as if it were normal ground. The character can also belly slide along ice, enabling them to seamlessly slide over narrow gaps and even breakBrick Blocks. Ice appears inWorld 3-1,World 3-3, the boss room withLemmy inWorld 3-Tower,World 3-4, and the boss room with Lemmy inWorld 3-
Castle. Ice also makes up the floor of theEnemy Course in World 3, which featuresIce Bros, and inWorld 9-5, one of the unlockable secret courses.
In addition to the returningIce Blocks, a number of new platforming objects have the slippery surface of ice, includingIce Walls,Huge Icicles,Ice Snake Blocks, and floatingice platforms.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
The ice inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 functions as it did in the firstSuper Mario Galaxy. It reduces Mario's (or Luigi) traction, but he skates along it if the player shakes the. Ice first appears in the coast-themedCosmic Cove Galaxy during the mission "Twin Falls Hideaway," where ablue switch freezes the surface of the sea when struck. It allows Mario toWall Jump up between two waterfalls. During "Catch That Star Bunny," a nearby water-covered planetoid also has a blue switch on it that freezes the water. This planetoid has ablack hole in its center that Mario can easily slide into if he freezes the water.
Ice has a more prominent presence in the snowyFreezy Flake Galaxy. One of Freezy Flake's largest planets has a small frozen pond withStar Bits floating above it, and aslide made of ice that connects to another area. There is an Underground Ice Rink hidden on this planet whereThe Chimp hosts hisskating challenge. Similar toWhac-A-Mole, skating into the mole-likeGummits awards Mario withpoints. The Chimp awards Mario aPower Star if he obtains up to 500 points. Thepipe that leads to the ice rink is concealed in one of the tree-shapedsnow sculptures of the planet, which can be destroyed with an attack fromRock Mario orFire Mario. Ice makes its final appearance in theShiverburn Galaxy, a galaxy comparable to the Freezeflame Galaxy from the firstSuper Mario Galaxy. Striking aGround-Pound Switch in this galaxy freezes thelava that covers the planets, allowing Mario to skate across it. The boss of Shiverburn,Prince Pikante, is fought on an arena made of ice. The Chimp also hosts aharder skating challenge underground, similar to the one from the Freezy Flake Galaxy. Ice encapsulates the planet inhabited byLi'l Brrs in theBattle Belt Galaxy.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
InNew Super Mario Bros. 2, ice appears exclusively within the snow-themedWorld 4. Its function is comparable to that of the firstNew Super Mario Bros., where traction is reduced and makes precise platforming difficult. Unlike theIce Blocks in the game, ice is not restricted to grid-like arrangements within levels, making up slopes, concave valleys, and narrow corridors. There is nopower-up or wearable item inNew Super Mario Bros. 2 that makes Mario (or Luigi) move normally on ice. Unlike previous games, the all ice is a vibrant light blue lightly covered with snow. Hexogan-shaped depressions occur on the sides of ice, and some are completely hollow, enabling a view of the background of the level.
Ice first appears towards the end ofWorld 4-1, where they make up opposing slopes. Icyboulders roll down the slopes. One of the level's Star Coins is accessible at the top of the ice. InWorld 4-Tower, ice is the primary footing available to Mario. It rises through the center of thetower. In the undergroundWorld 4-B, ice largely makes up concave depressions in the ground thatAmps travel along the edges of. In the above-groundWorld 4-3, the ice make up nearly the entirety of the terrain, forming long slopes with undulating hills. The background of this course resemblesAwesome, the only above-ground level fromSuper Mario World to feature ice.
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Luigi U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

InNew Super Mario Bros. U andNew Super Luigi U, ice is comparable to its prior appearance inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. It makes up large swaths of terrain and slopes, and is slippery when walked on. Ice is a vibrant light blue, and appears to have a thin layer of crystalized snow on its surface in above-ground levels. Uniquely, there areTurning Floors made of ice in these games. In the originalWii U release ofNew Super Mario Bros. U andNew Super Luigi U, all playable characters andYoshi have reduced traction while moving on ice. While thePenguin Suit appears in this game, the player character does not gain access to it until they arrive atSuperstar Road, the finalworld. Consequently, the player lacks means of stabilizing their footing on ice for most of the game. The only exception would be in Boost Mode, where the player can placeBoost Blocks above the ice using theWii U GamePad. In theNintendo Switch releaseNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe,Nabbit andToadette uniquely cannot slip on ice.
Within theNew Super Mario Bros. U campaign, ice is most recurring in the snow-themed worldFrosted Glacier, appearing as early as the first levelCooligan Fields, where it makes up most of the available footing.Cooligans slide along the surface of the ice, even across smallgaps. Ice similarly makes up nearly all of the footing inPrickly Goombas! and the undergroundIcicle Caverns. Asection of ice in the caverns conceals one the course's Star Coins. One of thesub-areas inWendy's Shifting Castle is completely composed of ice, as isWendy's boss room. Wendy wears ice skates that allow her to move along the ice with precision. Some of the solid terrain in the secret courseFliprus Lake is composed of ice. The final course to include ice is the underground levelHammerswing Caverns, the only snow-themed level of Superstar Road. Outside of the campaign, ice makes up the terrain inPenguin Bowling. Ice is less recurring inNew Super Luigi U, in which it appears only inCooligan Shrooms,Fire and Ice, andIce-Slide Expressway.
In addition toIce Blocks andice platforms, wholly newIce Chunks andblue-capped Seesaw Shrooms have slippery surfaces like ice.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

InSuper Mario 3D World, icy surfaces affect player characters as they do in theSuper Mario Galaxy titles. However, characters cannot manually skate; the courses that feature icy surfaces also includeIce Skates, which they can use move with greater speed and precision than they would otherwise. Ice Skates are typically in possession ofSkating Goombas, one of the few enemies found on icy surfaces. Others includeSnow Pokeys andWalleyes. Icy surfaces first appears inSnowball Park, the course that introduces the Ice Skate. Icy surfaces makes up narrow walkways and skating rink-like areas. The course'sStamp occurs on a very narrow strip of ice overhanging bottomlesspits. Icy surfaces subsequently appear in the snow-themedTy-Foo Flurries. InMystery House Marathon, the eleventhGreen Star occurs at the base of a ice-covered slope.
In theBowser's Fury campaign, icy surfaces make up the ridges of theSlipskate Slope, which also requires use of the Ice Skate to navigate.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Ice is largely restricted to certain underground areas inSuper Mario Odyssey, where it makes up the available terrain. In some areas, it is the only available footing. Mario normally has poor traction on ice and has difficulty maintaining momentum. However, he can remain surefooted as acapturedGoomba, though at the expense of his jumping height. Goombas are involved in the acquisition of severalPower Moons that are found in ice. Other moons entail Mario move across ice as is, such as striking alurker moving beneath the ice.
Ice first appears in theSand Kingdom. Upon first visit, the desert is chilled and bodies of water, such as theDesert Oasis in the southeast, are frozen over. There is an Ice Cave withinTostarena Ruins largely made-up of narrow, icy walkways. Goombas andPulse Beams occur here. Defeating the bossKnucklotec restores above-ground climate of the Sand Kingdom, causing much of the ice to disappear, but it remains accessible in the ruins. Ice reappears in theSnow Kingdom, described in its brochure as a "world of ice andsnow." There are giant pillars and sinking floats made of ice in the Snow Kingdom. There are various enclosed spaces where the terrain is entirely ice, including one where Mario can participate inKoopa Trace-Walking and another called The Cold Room where he can access a 2D area with slippery ice as itsground. There are sub-areas aroundShiveria Town that prominently feature ice, namelyIcicle Cavern,Wind-Chill Cavern, andSnowy Mountain. They are visited during theobjective "The Cake Thief's Parting Gift." Ice is the only available footing in the Icicle Cavern, which is occupied by many Goombas. In Wind-Chill Cavern,Ty-foos slide large wooden blocks along narrow paths of ice. The peak of Snowy Mountain is covered in ice, and during the objective, it is where Mario fightsRango. A Power Moon occurs lurking under the ice if this mountain is revisited after the objective has been completed.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
InSuper Mario Maker 2, selecting the nighttime Snow theme causes all surfaces to have much lower traction. This is reflected in the appearance ofGround andSlopes, which become blue and icy. In theNew Super Mario Bros. U game style, their appearance is reused fromCooligan Fields.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
- “You can't stop quickly on frozen surfaces. Watch your step as you progress through chilly levels.”
- —loading-screen tip
Ice is an uncommon terrain element ofFluff-Puff Peaks, appearing in three courses. As in previous games, ice reduces the player character's traction and makes it difficult for them to make precise jumps and maintain momentum. This includes Toadette and Nabbit, who do not slip on ice inNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. The ice in this game appears crystalline and reflects different bands of light, producing a radiance of different colors. The thin snow that hugs the tops and sides of ice is softly rounded. Hexagonal, translucent walls of ice appear in the background of some narrow sections where both the floor and ceiling are made of ice.Outmaways do not slip on ice.
Ice appears in the first course of Fluff-Puff Peaks,Outmaway Valley, where it makes up most of the terrain. Outmayways kickice blocks the slide along the ice. In some areas, the ice forms gentle slopes. Ice also appears in the secret courseBreak Time! Kick It, Outmaway. During the boss battle inFluff-Puff Peaks Palace,Wonder Bowser Jr. freezes the surfaces of the arena after transforming. It makes it difficult to land a hit on him, but Wonder Bowser Jr. also becomes dizzy after spinning in his shell on ice.
Mario Kart series[edit]

In theMario Kart series, ice appears on the surface of the road in some courses. It makes it difficult for the player character todrift or avoid oncoming hazards, similar to its function in the mainlineSuper Mario series.Penguins andSkating Shy Guys are recurring hazards on icy courses, as they do not slip on ice. In theMario Kart Arcade games, theSnow Cloud item causes the struck opponent's kart to behave as if they were driving on ice. Ice has appeared in nearly everyMario Kart title, beginning with the Vanilla Lake courses fromSuper Mario Kart. In games where a new course is not introduced, one from a previous game is included, as is the case for Sherbet Land inMario Kart 8. The only games to completely lack any ice-covered courses areMario Kart DS,Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, andMario Kart Arcade GP VR. A list of all courses with ice in theMario Kart series is provided below by order of appearance in the series, as well as the game in which they debuted:
- Vanilla Lake 1 –Super Mario Kart
- Vanilla Lake 2 –Super Mario Kart
- Sherbet Land –Mario Kart 64
- Snow Land –Mario Kart: Super Circuit
- Sherbet Land –Mario Kart: Double Dash
- Snow Panic –Mario Kart Arcade GP
- Rosalina's Ice World –Mario Kart 7
- Sherbet Rink –Mario Kart 7
- Vancouver Velocity –Mario Kart Tour
- RMX Vanilla Lake 1 –Mario Kart Tour
- RMX Vanilla Lake 2 –Mario Kart Tour
Donkey Kong franchise[edit]
Donkey Kong Country andDonkey Kong Land series[edit]
Donkey Kong Country[edit]
In the firstDonkey Kong Country, ice is a characterizing terrain element ofGorilla Glacier, the peak ofDonkey Kong Island and the fourth world of the game.Donkey Kong andDiddy Kong have reduced traction on ice, making it difficult to make precise platforming jumps. It makes up most of the terrain inSnow Barrel Blast,Slipside Ride, andIce Age Alley. Unlike the other two, Slipside Ride occurs within an icy cave and is the only level of this theme inDonkey Kong Country. All three of these courses are characterized by sloping hills, and some offer alternative means of traversal, such asBarrel Cannons andropes, to mitigate dependence on the icy floor. In theGame Boy Color andGame Boy Advance versions ofDonkey Kong Country, ice appears in these same levels unaltered.
Donkey Kong Land[edit]
There is no dedicated snow-themed world inDonkey Kong Land. Rather, snow-themed levels appear in the first worldGangplank Galleon Ahoy!, alternating with jungle and ship-themed ones. The levels with icy terrain areFreezing Fun,Rope Ravine, andArctic Barrel Arsenal.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest[edit]

Ice appears in theK. Rool's Keep and theLost World inDonkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. In K. Rool's Keep, it is introduced in the levelArctic Abyss, but much of the level occurs underwater, so its gameplay effects are minimal. It has a more substantial occurrence in the ice-cave levelClapper's Cavern, which also includes the titular seal,Clapper. Clapper is anAnimal Friend that freezes the surface ofwater, enabling safe traversal across distant areas. In the Lost World, ice makes up the slopes ofBlack Ice Battle, and appears in the portion ofAnimal Antics based aroundEnguarde.
Donkey Kong Land 2[edit]
Donkey Kong Land 2 is more comparable to its sister game on theSNES than the firstDonkey Kong Land was to its, and it consequently has equivalent levels of the same name. Ice appears in this game's iterations ofArctic Abyss,Clapper's Cavern, andBlack Ice Battle, though it does not appear in the game's iteration ofAnimal Antics.
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble![edit]
InDonkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, icy terrain occurs inSkidda's Row,Tearaway Toboggan, andLemguin Lunge, the latter two of which occur in the snow-themed worldK3. TheKremling enemySkidda slips on the ice, whereas the penguin-likeLemguin belly slides along it. Tearaway Toboggan uniquely has Dixie Kong andKiddie Kong ride atoboggan for the entirety of the level, which slides along the ice.
Donkey Kong Land III[edit]
Ice appears in the snow-themed levels ofPrimate Plains andBlackforest Plateau inDonkey Kong Land III. It appears specifically in the toboggan-exclusiveBlack Ice Blitz,Polar Pitfalls, andTundra Blunda. Like in its sister SNES game,Donkey Kong Land III has Skiddas and Lemguins occur on its icy terrain.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[edit]
Ice is a prominent element inDonkey Kong Island, which has been frozen over by theSnowmads inDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It is the final world of the game. Icy terrain largely overlays the the jungle topography of Donkey Kong Island that was introduced inDonkey Kong Country Returns, such as tropical plants and stone carving. As in previous games, ice reduces the player character's traction and makes precise platforming difficult. Ice appears in the levelsHomecoming Hijinxs,Seashore War,Aqueduct Assault,Frozen Frenzy,Meltdown Mayhem,Icicle Arsenal, andSlippy Spikes. Icy patches of flooring also appear during the boss battle withLord Fredrik inVolcano Dome.
Diddy Kong Racing /Diddy Kong Racing DS[edit]
Walrus Cove andSnowball Valley fromDiddy Kong Racing feature ice as a hazard. If players oncars drive on them, it causes the car to stop and bounce back to the main part of the road. Players onhovercrafts are unaffected. In the remake,Diddy Kong Racing DS, the ice in Walrus Cove is replaced by water, and it simply slows car players down as with the water in other tracks in the game.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat /New Play Control! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat[edit]
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat features icy terrain in the levelsIce Warren andAurora Glacier. Much of Ice Warren is a downward slope, in whichDonkey Kong must strike oncoming enemies and leap over spike-headedSnow Moles in order safely navigate the level. He is perpetually sliding through most of it. In Auorora Glacier, Donkey Kong is skating along the surface of the ice, and is capable of dynamically skidding along it. Icy flooring also has a brief appearance at the beginning ofArctic Plunge, in whichDonkey Kong must crack open an iceberg in order to reach the water below.
Yoshi franchise[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island /Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

InSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and the remakeYoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, ice makes up part of the terrain in the snow-themed levelsBLIZZARD!!! andDanger - Icy Conditions Ahead.Yoshis have reduced traction on ice, and their steps are accompanied with a high-pitched sound effect when the run on ice. Unlikeice blocks, Yoshi has no means of melting ice. In BLIZZARD!!!, ice makes up part of the floor of the cave section of the level, whereLantern Ghosts appear frozen within. Ice is more prominent in Danger - Icy Conditions Ahead, in which they appear alongside ice blocks.
Yoshi's Island DS[edit]
Ice makes up part of the terrain in the snow-themedSlip Slidin' Away andTeeth-Chattering Chill Zone inYoshi's Island DS. LikeSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, the Yoshis have no means of melting icy floors.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
InYoshi's New Island, ice makes up part of the ground in the levelsBrave the Bumpty Blizzard andFire Watermelon Wonderland. They interlace patches of normal snowy ground and are pale blue.
Yoshi's Woolly World /Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
InYoshi's Woolly World, ice is an expected common element inWorld 5, a sky and snow-themed world. When Yoshi walks across ice, or any other objects made of ice, his feet transform into ice skates. This takes priority over the wheel transformation, though if Yoshi is already using his wheel animation he will swap to skates after a short time. Yoshi will gradually slide down any slope of ice, even if he stands still.Bumpties, penguin enemies who push Yoshi away on contact, are made more dangerous because of the lack of traction. WhileMermaid Yoshi can struggle across normal land, it cannot successfully climb upward icy slopes and gets turned the other way. Ice primarily appears inFrozen Solid and Chilled,Big Montgomery's Ice Fort, andSnifberg the Unfeeling's Castle, though Big Montgomery's Ice Fort focuses more on varieties of Ice Blocks. Ice makes a minor appearance inA Little Light Snowfall andWonderful World of Wool, the latter in its World 5 themed section.
Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World has the additional courseBobsledding Peaks in itsPoochy Dash mode, which based on World 5 and unlocked after completing Big Montgomery's Ice Fort. Bobsledding Peaks is entirely covered in ice. Sliding on ice causes Poochy to flip onto his back, and he stays in this position until he bumps into a wall or reaches the goal. A low ceiling early in Bobsledding Peaks enforces entering this slide, and there are very few opportunities to bump into walls. While sliding in this way, Poochy moves much faster than normal, though he cannot jump as high. There are ramps in the course that Poochy can jump from to gain more height and distance than he can normally.
Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]
Ice makes up the surface of slippery iceberg-like platforms and slopes inSlip-Slide Isle. One of these platforms features a papercraftpolar bear sleeping. This is the only snow-themed level inYoshi's Crafted World to include icy surfaces.
Mario Party series[edit]
Ice has been a fixture of multiple minigames in theMario Party series, as early as the first game. Most minigames featuring ice cause the participants to slide on the surface, or utilize a piece of equipment designed to work on ice, like a bobsled or ice skates. Some minigames entail the participants traverse across icebergs with slippery surfaces, or keep them from tilting over as enemies drop on them. Ice appears as a passive background detail in some minigames as well, such asTall Order fromSuper Mario Party. A list of all minigames with interactable icy terrain is provided below:
- Bobsled Run –Mario Party
- Ice-Rink Risk –Mario Party 3
- Photo Finish –Mario Party 4
- Mr. Blizzard's Brigade –Mario Party 4
- Later Skater –Mario Party 5
- Sled Slide –Mario Party Advance
- Crushed Ice –Mario Party Advance
- Gimme a Brake –Mario Party 7
- Glacial Meltdown –Mario Party 8
- Polar Extreme –Mario Party 9
- Mob Sleds –Mario Party 9
- Slip 'n' Slip –Mario Party: Island Tour
- Go with the Floe –Mario Party: Island Tour
- Ice Slide, You Slide –Mario Party 10
- Penguin Pushers –Super Mario Party
- Cold Front –Super Mario Party Jamboree
- Sled to the Edge –Super Mario Party Jamboree
- Rinks to Riches –Super Mario Party Jamboree
Mario Party 5'sSuper Duel Mode also includes icy terrain as a hazard, found sometimes in the randomized levels generated inRandom Ruckus or inSnowy Slope. Levels in Random Ruckus can either feature fully ice terrain or patches of ice. The terrain causes vehicles to skid when turning. Steel is a similar terrain to ice. Vehicles equipped with Spiny Tires or floating components, the Lakitu Cloud Body or the E. Gadd Jet, are unaffected by the terrain.
Ice as terrain is absent in the minigames forMario Party 6.Snowflake Lake, at day, however features ice. Players that land on anEvent Space in the middle of the board triggers a board minigame that pits four players on an ice rink. During a short time,Brighton dropscoins, while players can skate on the ice to collect them. Bumping into other players stuns the player. Players keep the coins they collect.
Paper Mario[edit]
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
InPaper Mario: Sticker Star,World 4 has various icy surfaces, particularly inIce Flow. These make Mario's walking harder to control.
Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]
InPaper Mario: The Origami King, theIce Vellumental Mountain is covered in ice that lowers Mario's traction when he walks on it. Some puzzles involve standing on flat panels of ice and propelling them in certain directions with Mario's hammer.
Luigi's Mansion[edit]
Ice is also a terrain in several rooms inLuigi's Mansion.Cold Storage features ice that reduces Luigi's traction to hinder his ability to captureSir Weston.
WarioWare series[edit]
Somemicrogames of theWarioWare series have ice in them. For example,9-Volt'sIce Climber microgame, based on the game of the same name, has icy platforms that reduce Popo's traction.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team has platforms that can be turned icy withLuiginary Ice, appearing only inDreamy Mount Pajamaja. Mario slips when he walks on them.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Paper Jam,Mount Brrr has patches of ice that make the Bros. slide on them when stepped on.
Mario Tennis series[edit]
Mario Power Tennis /New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis[edit]
InMario Power Tennis, theMario Classic Court features several hazards from theMario Bros. arcade game that move onto both players' courts. Freezie is a rare spawn, and if it reaches the center of the player's side, it freezes it, causing the terrain to change to ice, and players on that side have slippery traction for a temporary amount of time.
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash[edit]
InMario Tennis: Ultra Smash, theIce Court is covered in ice. Similarly to the Mario Classic Court, ice makes moving across the court more difficult. Note that theMorph Court, a court which has a half of it change into a different court whenever aChance Shot bounces on that half of the court, is unable to turn into the Ice Court.
Mario Hoops 3-on-3[edit]
TheSherbet Land basketball court inMario Hoops 3-on-3 features ice that hinders movement for players. If players attempt to steal the ball while running, they slip and fall.
Mario Strikers Charged[edit]
The Wastelands fromMario Strikers Charged features icy terrain as a primary hazard. Players have less control over their characters, making certain movements such as body checks and slides more difficult to use.
