Hungry Luma,Super Mario Galaxy

Hungry Lumas are a type ofLuma that appears inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2. These slightly chubby pink Lumas have visible mouths (unlike regular Lumas). Similar to aLumalee andComet Luma[derived], Hungry Lumas are always seen carrying twosenko hanabi (one in each hand) that have either color-changingStar Bits orcoins on the end, the latter appearing only inSuper Mario Galaxy 2.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy /Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

A screenshot of a Hungry Luma nearly filled with Star Bits
Hungry Lumas become large and swollen when fed the number of requested Star Bits.

Hungry Lumas tend to appear as part of hiddenStar missions; inSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, they also appear on theComet Observatory. InSuper Mario Galaxy 2, Hungry Lumas appear on the World Map, and they can be called toStarship Mario. WhenMario finds a Hungry Luma, he must feed it a certain number of Star Bits or coins, making it larger and larger, until it transforms into a new planet orgalaxy; the transformation is usually permanent, and the resulting planet or galaxy can be visited at the player's leisure. The only Hungry Luma that reverts to its previous form after is the one that transforms into the Tower Planet in theGood Egg Galaxy; this is done as a part of one of the galaxy's mainmissions, and thus the Luma must be fed 100 Star Bits to transform each time thelevel is replayed, since the planet does not remain after the level has been completed. Often, the player is able to travel to the newly created planet or galaxy via a pinkLaunch Star right after the Hungry Luma transforms; an exception is the one that transforms into theVan-Van Vanish Lv2 Zone in theSea Slide Galaxy, as the planet is accessible bycannon.

Hungry Lumas found throughout individual galaxies usually require a smaller number of Star Bits to transform into planets, while Hungry Lumas that appear on the Comet Observatory or are called to Starship Mario require larger numbers of Star Bits to create entire galaxies. InSuper Mario Galaxy, there is a total of seven Hungry Lumas that appear on the Comet Observatory (one outside eachdome and theGate). InSuper Mario Galaxy 2, seven more Hungry Lumas can be called to Starship Mario from each of the sevenworlds. Both games also feature seven planet-creating Hungry Lumas, for a total of 28 Hungry Lumas.

InSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport, a planet created by a Hungry Luma within a galaxy features a unique background matching the appearance of the Hungry Lumas themselves—a clear pink sky with a hint of a lighter yellow color.

The appearances of Hungry Lumas in both games are listed below:

Hungry Luma trading cardHungry LumaPinkish in color, Hungry Lumas are known to have wide open mouths and carry sticks with Star Bits on the end of them. When Hungry Lumas appear, Mario must feed them Star Bits. They will then transform into a new planet that he needs to explore. To help Mario get there, they will leave behind a Launch Star. Some Hungry Lumas will cost you more Star Bits than others—especially on the Comet Observatory.
