Hint Toad, also known as theBrigade Blue Toad,[1] is a member of theToad Brigade, first appearing inSuper Mario Galaxy, where he was not given a name untilSuper Mario Odyssey. He is a blueToad who wears big, round glasses, without which he cannot see,[2] making him one of the few Toad Brigade members with a distinct physical trait aside from color, alongsideCaptain Toad andToadette. He is often characterized as intelligent, knowledgeable, and helpful.
Hint Toad is similar toToadbert,Russ T. and theToad General. They are all glasses-wearing, intelligent Blue Toads.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, Hint Toad appears as one of the five members in theToad Brigade. Eventually,Mario orLuigi come along and saves the five Toads (including Hint Toad) in theHoneyhive Galaxy. Throughout the game, the Toad Brigade attempts to help Mario on his quest by traveling throughout the different galaxies in the search forPower Stars. In their last appearance in the game, the five Toads are revealed to have been promoted to Royal Guards due to their work of helping Mario.
Of the Toad Brigade, Hint Toad is shown to be the smartest of the five Toads and provides Mario with some very useful information about the galaxies. To show his intelligence, Hint Toad wears glasses and is known as the "smart one".
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Hint Toad is once again part of the Toad Brigade inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport. He, along with the other Toads in the brigade, arrives onStarship Mario after Mario or Luigi clearSpin-Dig Galaxy. Once again, he is the smartest, and often gives Mario hints on how to defeatBowser. His speech changes every time Mario clears a world. In theBoulder Bowl Galaxy, Hint Toad will be picking at the ground with a pickaxe. He says he lost his glasses, but upon closer examination using the first-person view, he is actually hitting his glasses with his pick.
After giving theBanktoad 1,000 Star Bits, he will wear a pair of glasses similar to Hint Toad's pair because he wants to look smart.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Hint Toad once again appears inSuper Mario Odyssey as a supporting character, being named as such for the first time. He is performing a survey ofPower Moon locations to helpPeach. If Mario gives Hint Toad 50Coins, he will mark the location of an unobtained Power Moon on the map of the kingdom they are in. There is no limit to how many hints can be given, except for the number of unobtained and unrevealed Power Moons in that kingdom. The row of a revealed Power Moon in the Power Moon List is marked with a Hint Toad icon. Both the hint and this icon disappear once the Power Moon is obtained. Hint Toad does not mark Power Moons that already have their location revealed, and does not start conversations with Mario if there are no hints he can give for Power Moons in a kingdom. Hint Toad always appears alongsideUncle amiibo, another character who helps Mario find Power Moons. Hint Toad only starts appearing after first completingMulti Moon Atop the Falls in theCascade Kingdom. He only appears on theDark Side after the objectiveArrival at Rabbit Ridge! is completed and does not appear at all on theDarker Side, but does appear in every other kingdom. He has the same appearance as inCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker, but now dons asafari hat. The brochure that Hint Toad holds has a map ofBob-omb Battlefield fromSuper Mario 64.
Although Hint Toad can already be found in theLost Kingdom at the beginning of the area, another blue Toad wearing the Toad Brigade attire can be found nearTalkatoo.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
Hint Toad appears in theSuper Mario 3D World port titledSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury as a playable character in theCaptain Toad's Adventures levels when playing as P2. He has the same appearance as inCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker. In theBowser's Fury campaign of the game, Hint Toad is found near the peak ofMount Magmeow, trying to outrun aConkdor attacking him, much likeCaptain Toad inConkdor Canyon. Upon defeating the Conkdor, Hint Toad thanks Mario orBowser Jr. by rewarding him with aCat Shine. VisitingFur Step Island from then onward show him reunited withToadette and the other Toad Brigade members Mario find.
