“In this world, there are things called "hidden treasures". Useyour awesomejumping ability to look for 'em.”
Mushroom person,Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Hidden Treasures (originallyhidden treasures), alternatively calledSurprise Boxes[1] orhidden chests,[2] are invisibletreasure boxes inSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. The magic that cloaks these treasure boxes is of unknown origin.[3]Mario learns about Hidden Treasures from an oldMushroom person living in the basement of theItem Shop in theMushroom Kingdom. Byjumping, Mario can discover the location of the invisible treasures. 39 of them are found in the game. A friendlyComeon inMonstro Town provides Mario the number of Hidden Treasures left to be found. Later in the game, Mario can collect and equip an accessory fromCroco, theSignal Ring, which makes a noise whenever Mario is in an area with a Hidden Treasure. There is no reward for opening every Hidden Treasure, and the Comeon from Monstro Town says, "Wow, you found them all," for doing so.

The concept of hidden containers is carried over withHidden Blocks in thePaper Mario games andMario & Luigi games.

Mario's Pad,Vista Hill,Mushroom Way,Kero Sewers,Midas River,Tadpole Pond,Rose Way,Moleville,Booster Hill,Star Hill,Seaside Town,Sea,Grate Guy's Casino,Barrel Volcano andBowser's Keep are only locations without any hidden treasures.
