- “HP shows a character's health. Taking damage causes it to decrease. Characters willfaint if their HP reaches zero.”
- —Guide,Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions
HP (which stands for "Heart Points," "Health Points," or "Hit Points," depending on the game using it) is a game mechanic that denotes the health of a character or object in numerousrole-playing games, including those related to theSuper Mario franchise, as well as theLuigi's Mansion series. HP can be restored using healingitems such asMushrooms, as well asRecovery Blocks (from thePaper Mario series, the Japanese version ofMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and all versions ofits 3DS remake,Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, andMario & Luigi: Paper Jam).Mario can also restore his HP from small hearts that can be found on the field or by defeating enemies.
When a given character's HP reaches zero, they aredowned. If the lastparty member (or just Mario, in the first twoPaper Mario games) is downed, the player will lose the battle and receive aGame Over unless they have aLife Shroom (or any other type of life-restorative) in stock. To decrease the chance of this happening, Mario and the other playable characters can increase their maximum HP whenleveling up in most games.
History[edit]
NOTE: Atooltip designates what "HP" stands for in a given game.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]
CertainSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars enemies (such asDry Bones) are stated byMallow'sThought Peek ability to have zeroHP, although this really means that they are immune to all attacks but Magic ones, which destroy them in one hit.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
In theSuper Smash Bros. series,Master Hand andCrazy Hand appear withHP instead of percent digits. Additionally,Super Smash Bros. Melee and subsequent games allow the players to choose to substituteHP instead of percent digits in Stamina Mode. If a character'sHP reaches zero, they will enter a fainting animation. Bosses will be defeated, and players will lose their stock.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
- Mario starts with a maximum of 10HP, which can be increased by five with eachLevel-Up until he reaches 50HP, in addition to anyBadges that affectHP.
- Mario'spartners no longer have separateHP; partners are instead stunned whenever taking damage.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
- Like inPaper Mario, Mario starts with 10HP, which can be increased by five with each Level-Up, although in this game, hisHP can exceed 50 this way.
- Each of Mario's partners once again has separateHP. Mario'sHP can now be reduced to zero on the field, rather than staying at one like in the previous game.
- Partners can have theirHP further increased when upgraded atMerlon's house, at the cost of threeShine Sprites.
- Collecting Heart Points on the field now heals both Mario and the partner currently following him.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
- Mario,Luigi,Peach, andBowser all share the sameHP. They start with 10HP, and their maximumHP increases by five for every other Level-Up received.HP can also be increased by usingHP Plus items.
- Some enemies and bosses, such asFracktail andMr. I's, have theirHP listed as "??" These enemies are always defeated with either a set number of attacks or a special maneuver regardless of the player's level. Conventional methods of attack may not work.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
- Mario now starts with a maximum of 20HP, which increases by five with eachHP-Up Heart up to a total capacity of 100HP.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
- Mario's maximumHP can be increased by 25 from aMax HP up! after he rescues aBig Paint Star, beginning at 50HP and reaching a total capacity of 200HP.
Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]
- Mario's maximumHP is again increased by obtaining MAX UP Hearts on the field, adding either five, ten, or 20HP depending on the size of the heart. Like inPaper Mario: Color Splash, Mario's HP begins at 50 and caps at 200.
- Mario's maximumHP can exceed 200 when he uses aHeart Plus accessory in battle, though the extraHP are removed afterwards.
- Additionally, theOarsman's boat andBowser's Airship can sustain five hits before being wrecked, rather than using Mario'sHP.
- Hole Punch is the only boss in the game that can temporarily lower Mario's maximumHP; with each hole in his body, Mario'sHP is halved. In order to restore his maximumHP, the player must find the piece missing from Mario's body or complete the battle.
Luigi's Mansion series[edit]
InLuigi's Mansion, Luigi has a maximum of 100HP. Mostghosts have their ownHP revealed bytheir hearts, whileBoos instead indicate their health with an electrified purple cloud. For instance,King Boo has 500HP, and the remainingportrait ghosts each have 100HP.Boolossus is an exception, as its health is instead measured by how many of the 15 Boos remain on the field during the fight. The3DS remake introducesGooigi, who has 50HP, andamiibo support, allowing for more methods of restoringHP. In theHidden Mansion in the 3DS remake, all ghosts, including portrait ghosts and Boos, have their health increased by a factor of 1.5 compared to them in the original game.
The frame and quality for Boss gallery ghosts (Chauncey,Bogmire, Boolossus, and King Boo) are determined by how high Luigi's health is after he captures the ghost.
- Bronze: If Luigi fails to keep his health above 60HP.
- Silver: If Luigi's health is kept above 60HP at the end of the battle.
- Gold: If Luigi's health has not fallen below 90HP at the end of the battle. This is the highest-quality painting for boss ghosts.
- Platinum: For non-boss ghosts, Luigi must drain 140HP in one go. For boss ghosts, he must finish the battle with at least 95HP. This frame is exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS remake.
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon introduces stronger variants of the regular ghosts, which have increased health. The game also introduces theCreeper ghost, ghosts who have an infinite amount ofHP and can only be defeated using a Power Surge – this doesn't apply to their smaller versions, as, whilst they have zero health, they can be vacuumed up without resistance.. While Luigi scales theScarescraper, allies can revive him after he loses all his health, bringing him back with 20HP. These additions return inLuigi's Mansion 3, where Gooigi now has a maximum of 25HP that regenerate over time, and Luigi's maximum health has been reduced to 99HP. Miniature variants of theGoobs andHammers are introduced, both of which have zero health and thus can be vacuumed without resistance once stunned with a flash.
Luigi's Mansion Arcade opts to represent Luigi's health with only two hearts, which together act as a gauge. Each attack deals half of a heart of damage, essentially giving Luigi fourHP. The ghosts in this game also have reduced health compared to them inLuigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, which the arcade game is based on. Upon losing all health, the player can insert more credits to get a Continue Boost, which restores Luigi to full health.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga andMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, theWoohoo Blend, which is made atStarbeans Cafe, can increase the max number of HP a character has by four/two points. In theMario & Luigi series followingMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, the player can useHeart Beans to increase a character's max HP by one point or three points in the case of Heart Bean DXs.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership (in-battle)
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]
InPuzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, each teammate'sHP on the player's team is totaled for their health bar when they play a course. For this reason, individual teammates cannot be KO'd, but the entire team can if its totalHP reaches zero. ClearingHeart Orbs or usingHP-recovering Skills replenishes the player's team's health bar. Several teammates have the Awoken Skill Health Boost to raise the player's team's maximumHP upon entering a course, as do several Leader and Helper Skills. The player can also raise a teammate's maximumHP by de-powering teammates that provideHPplus bonuses, each plus bonus increasingHP by ten.
Mario + Rabbids series[edit]
InMario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle,Power Orbs/Power Runes can be exchanged within theSkill Trees for various health upgrades. InMario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope,Skill Prisms replace this function in theSkill Trees.
- Extra Health increases a hero's maximumHP a total of two, three, or four times depending on who is being upgraded.
- Mushroom Mend/Heal Sponge increases the potency of healing items/sources.
- HP Chill Out recovers 15% of a hero's health after combat.
Peach andRabbid Peach have various Health Point restoringTechniques that can be upgraded through the Skill Trees.
Additionally, inMario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, everyone's maximumHP increases after each world is cleared.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
Heart Points[1] are not used to restore health inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder; instead, they measure how much the player has helped other players online. The player can earn Heart Points in different ways, including givingpower-ups to other players, reviving theirghosts, and reaching theGoal Pole at the same time as all other players in the course.
Princess Peach: Showtime![edit]
Peach's health meter inPrincess Peach: Showtime! is shown as hearts, and she starts each level with five HP, shown as hearts above her head and in the pause menu. She loses one HP if she comes into non-attacking contact with an enemy, gets hit by projectiles, falls down, gets caught up during some auto-scrolling sections, or touches lasers or certain kinds of fire;Patissiere Peach loses a baking competition; orDetective Peach makes aStrike of Intuition on an incorrect target. Reducing her HP to zero makes Peach sit down sadly for a short while and sends her back to the most recent checkpoint.
Peach receives HP hearts as a form of gratitude from certainTheets she has saved in levels, and when interacting with certain sceneries.
The "Rehearsal" bonus levels start Peach off with one HP, and she cannot gain more hearts during those levels. The one-HP heart is not shown during the bonus levels.
The game does not have a life system. As a result, there are no Game Overs or being booted out of shows. If Peach runs out of hearts, she is deducted 10 coins and is returned to the start of the section or the nearest previous checkpoint.
The game also offers Peach to put on a Heart Charm, which increases the HP at the start of each level to eight, with the extra hearts shown on the right of Peach. It is offered, and can be removed, by aStaff Member Theet in the upper left of the1F circle stairs after the player finishesThe Castle of Thorns.Stella can also offer it to Peach if she runs out of hearts twice in the same section of a show. The extra hearts are shown as green and cannot be replenished by receiving hearts.
