Haunted Holes[1] are obstacles that appear only inChoco-Ghost House inSuper Mario World. They are holes in the floor that move back and forth within a small area, functioning as mobilebottomless pits. One Haunted Hole passes under adoor, which can only be entered during the periods where it is not floating above the hole.

The Haunted Holes' visual effect is not achieved by removing the floor – instead, the floor is covered up with a solid black portion of the Haunted Holes' sprite, which exactly matches the background behind them.[2]

Naming[edit]

The Haunted Hole is translated as theGhost Gap in theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia.[3]
