Hammer Mario,[1][2] also referred to asHammer Brother Mario[3] orHammer Bros. Mario,[4] is a form ofMario orLuigi only seen inSuper Mario Bros. 3 and itsSNES andGame Boy Advance remakes, gained when he wears aHammer Suit. This form is not to be confused with Mario or Luigi wielding a hammer, with the difference being the infinite disposable supply of hammers and the black shell armor.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 3 /Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
In this form, Mario and Luigi resemble aHammer Brother and, like one, are able to throw an infinite supply ofhammers in a short upward arc (which can be lengthened or shortened with the). Hammers can defeat most enemies, even those that cannot be defeated withfireballs, such as theAngry Sun,Buzzy Beetles,Boos,Bullet Bills,Chain Chomps,Dry Bones,Firesnakes,Hot Foots,Podoboos,Para-Beetles,Stretches, andThwomps; they can also defeatBoom Boom andBowser. As such, this form can be considered a stronger version of theFire form. They cannot defeatRoto-Discs,Jelectros,Munchers, or theKoopalings, however. As with fireballs, only two hammers can be thrown at a time, but hammers can fly through ceilings, walls, and floors. Mario and Luigi can also block enemies' fireballs in this form by crouching, but they cannotslide down slopes normally. However, they can slide down a slope if they get a Hammer Suit while already sliding, as can be demonstrated inWorld 6-10's bonus room. If Mario changes form, any remaining hammers on screen will disappear in a puff of smoke.
Despite the official artwork depicting Hammer Mario with his normal complexion and outfit colors underneath, hisFamily Computer andNintendo Entertainment System sprite depicts him with tan skin in levels, a white shirt, white shoes, and black overalls; his skin color is normal on the world map, incastles after saving one of thekings, in the ending roll, and briefly whenever the screen darkens (such as when entering a door). His 16-bit sprites depict him with a brownish yellow shirt and gray overalls and he keeps his normal skin color.
Super Mario Advance 4 adds a new utility to this form: its hammers can breakRock Blocks.
Super Mario Maker /Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS /Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
InSuper Mario Maker, itsNintendo 3DS version, andSuper Mario Maker 2, knocking on aWarp Door in theSuper Mario Bros. 3 theme may causeWeird Mario to appear in this form. In the latter game,Builder Mario's hammer swing can break Hard Blocks (similar to the Rock Blocks inSuper Mario Advance 4) and defeat most usually unbeatable foes, like this form.

- InSuper Mario Odyssey, Mario can throw hammers to attack similarly to the Hammer form when hecaptures a Hammer Bro.
- This is the only form fromSuper Mario Bros. 3 that has yet to reappear in a laterSuper Mario game (barring reissues).
