Gun barrels[1][2] (each described as a "gun's barrel"),[3] also referred to asturrets[4][5] ortank barrels,[6] are horizontal turrets fastened totanks and vessels inDark Land inSuper Mario Bros. 3. They occur in thefirst tank course andsecond tank course. They are invocative of blackpipes of various lengths, and they are attached to the left side of most tanks in these levels. Gun barrels firecannonballs that travel straight to the left. Gun barrels have the same cannonball speed and firing rate as the diagonalcannons, which also appear in the same levels. Also like these cannons, gun barrels cannot be destroyed or disabled. They come in alarger version as well.
In theSuper Mario Maker series, horizontal-facing cannons have a similar function as single-tiled gun barrels.
Naming[edit]
The Japanese release of theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia recognizes gun barrels as the "normal" cannons inSuper Mario Bros. 3, whereas the diagonal mortars that would characterize most enemy cannons in future 2D games are recognized as「斜め砲台」(Naname Hōdai, "diagonal artillery") in this game.[7]
