Guardarms are enemies that appear onRumbla Island inMario & Luigi: Brothership. They are yellow, spherical creatures that possess long arms with large purple hands and feet. According to one of the Concordians of Rumbla Island, Guardarms get their kicks from destroying the artwork of the Rumbla Village inhabitants.
Mario and Luigi first encounter Guardarms harrassing two Rumblans, and defeat the Guardarms. During the first visit to Rumbla Island, Guardarms are only fought in three scripted battles and are not encountered in the field.
After linkingRaynforst Island andTwistee Island,Mario andLuigi are sent to revisit Rumbla Island, who discover the island in a derelict state with a number of sculptures shattered by the Guardarm horde, who are revealed to be the underlings of their boss,Gorumbla. At this point, Guardarms are encountered in the field generally running around, but getting too close to them will cause the creatures to swim through the ground at the intruder. Guardarms only appear in the northeast section of the island where their boss lurks, in an area inaccessible during the first visit.
During the side questGorumbla Gone Good, Guardarms act as NPCs rather than enemies. Guardarms can be fought again once the side quest is cleared.
OnceReclusa is awakened after the second visit toFortress Zokket, they will be replaced with theirGlohm-infected counterparts.
Battle[edit]
Guardarms use their hands as shields; to damage the creatures,Mario andLuigi have to attack them from an exposed direction: from above if the Guardarm is holding both hands forward (this calls for a jump attack) or from the front if it is holding both hands above its head (this calls for a hammer attack). Attacking from the wrong direction will cause the attack to become weakened. Their hands change position each time they take damage either by regular attacks or counterattacks.
At first, Guardarms have only one attack, which is jumping into the air and then swimming through the ground to ram into their target, which can be avoided by jumping over or on them. Where the Guardarm looks before it attacks indicates who it will aim for. Guardarms only take damage if their target lands on their body; if the defender lands on their hands, they take no damage. Once Mario and Luigi obtain hammers, Guardarms also attack by throwing a rock at a Bro., which if countered with the hammer splits and damages the Guardarm along with other enemies in the battle. Guardarms only use their rock throw technique when their arms are above their head, and after this attack, they revert to putting their arms in front.
