- —Penguin,Super Mario Galaxy
Gringills are enemies inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2. These huge orange eels have large eyes and teeth. Much likeMaw-Rays, they attack by trying to biteMario orLuigi. Gringills can be defeated by throwing aKoopa Shell at them. An even larger version calledBig Gringill also exists.
History[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, Gringills come in two varieties, being ones in caves and ones that swim freely. Caved ones' behavior also has two variations: Some become visible only if Mario or Luigi get close, at which point they emerge and bite whenever he approaches but remain visible in their caves regardless; others constantly emerge, bite, and retract regardless of what Mario does. Free-swimming Gringills always swim in wide, medium-speed loops similarly to theSushi enemy inSuper Mario 64. The latter type is the focus of "Giant Eel Outbreak," where Mario must defeat three Gringills that are menacing theDrip Drop Galaxy.
Gringills appear in the following list of galaxies and missions. If no mission is stated, Gringills appear during all missions:
- Beach Bowl Galaxy (all missions but "Fast Foes on the Cyclone Stone"; caved, emerges when approached)
- Drip Drop Galaxy (swimming)
- Bigmouth Galaxy (swimming)
- Sea Slide Galaxy (caved, emerges constantly)
- Deep Dark Galaxy ("Guppy and the Underground Lake", "Boo in a Box"; swimming)
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport, Gringills are a lot less common, with only the caved versions making occasional appearances. They appear inCosmic Cove Galaxy'ssecond mission, where they emerge when approached, and in both missions ofSlimy Spring Galaxy, where they emerge when approached.

Naming[edit]
Etymology[edit]
The "grin" part in "Gringill" is likely in reference to the enemy's exposed teeth. It is one of the few discrete names to be mentioned directly inSuper Mario Galaxy, in whichpenguins apply it to the enemy during "Giant Eel Outbreak." In the original Japanese release, they instead nondescriptly refer to it as an「アナゴ」(anago, "conger").[1] The enemy is more specifically referred to by the respectivecommon names forwhitespotted congers in the Korean and Simplified Chinese localizations. It is generically referred to as an "eel" in most of the non-English European localizations.[2][3][4] The North American and Italian localizations ofSuper Mario Galaxy refer to the enemy by discrete names.
The European French version of thePrima Games guidebook refers to the enemy by its Canadian French name,Anguillon, which was followed suit in the guidebook forSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia. The Italian name,Pesce Boa, may be a deliberate connection to the initial intent to base Gringills onsnakeheads, as conveyed by the internal file designations for the enemy. The German nameSchlangenfisch, introduced in the Prima Games guidebook forSuper Mario Galaxy 2, has similar connotations.
