AGrinder is a spinning circular saw blade that acts as an enemy and obstacle in several games of theSuper Mario franchise.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario World /Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2[edit]
Grinders first appear inSuper Mario World (and itsreissue) as enemies. Grinders are encountered in someFortresses andCastles. There are Grinders that travel alongtracks, while others travel across the floor. The blades are rather large and cannot be jumped on, although they can be defeated by aSlope Slide (which displays aglitchy sprite).Mario orLuigi can alsoSpin Jump onto a Grinder, which lets them bounce off it without taking any damage. This obstacle first appears inForest Fortress and their only other appearance is in#6 Wendy's Castle.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and itsNintendo Switchport, Grinders (referred to as "buzz saws" in thePrima guide) cut through planks of wood in straight lines or large circular patterns, causing both the section of wood and the Grinder to fall. When Mario or Luigi traverse certain parts of a planet or comes close to a Grinder, it starts moving and any enemy that touches it is defeated. Some simply travel along the edges of planets in inset tracks, not actually cutting through anything.Garigari Minis also appear in the game, which are smaller versions that are only ever shown cutting in much smaller curved lines.
Grinders appear in thePuzzle Plank Galaxy ("The Puzzling Picture Block", "Bugaboom's Back") and theRolling Masterpiece Galaxy ("Silver Chomp Grudge Match" only).
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
Grinders also appear inSuper Mario 3D Land, behaving like they did inSuper Mario Galaxy 2. They appear only inWorld 7-5, where they are the primary obstacles for thelevel.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Grinders appear inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, where they operate on tracks as they did inSuper Mario World. They make clock ticking sound effects and can also jump vertically, if the tracks allow them to. Grinders are among the few obstacles in the game that cannot be destroyed byGold Mario's fireballs, though it is possible to destroy a Grinder by touching it asWhite Raccoon Mario. They are commonly found inWorld 3-
Castle, serving as prominent obstacles throughout the level. Grinders also appear inWorld
Star-
Castle, and thethird level of theImpossible Pack.Big Grinders also appear in the game in the former level, along withWorld 3-
Castle.
Super Mario Maker /Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS /Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Grinders reappear inSuper Mario Maker,Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Mario Maker 2. Their appearance is larger and different than that of previous titles. Because Grinders did not appear inSuper Mario Bros. andSuper Mario Bros. 3, new sprites were made for those styles, and theNew Super Mario Bros. 2 model is reused for theNew Super Mario Bros. U style, though a bigger sprite was created for theSuper Mario World style instead of reusing the original sprite. They also cannot beSpin Jumped on and are invincible, though they can be jumped on usingYoshi or aGoomba's Shoe. Grinders in this game remain floating in place instead of spinning right and left if not connected to a track.
The version 1.30 update allows the player to shake the Grinder, turning it into aBumper. The Bumper will simply cause Mario to bounce off it, and nothing else. InSuper Mario Maker 2 Bumpers are now separate objects.
Super Mario Run[edit]
Grinders appear as obstacles inSuper Mario Run. They can be found staying in one spot, or moving on atrack. Grinders appear inCutting-Edge Spire andMake the Cut!. During aCoin Rush, stationary Grinders often throw out coins to collect.
Yoshi's Story[edit]
Buzz saws[1] reappear inYoshi's Story. They are found abundantly inMecha Castle andLift Castle, and reappear inMagma Castle in tight spaces. Some buzz saws are permanently connected to walls and need to bejumped or crawled past.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
Grinders also appear inPaper Mario: Sticker Star. They are only found inChomp Ruins where they cause ten points of damage to Mario if he comes into contact with one.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
A Grinder appears asBowser Jr.'s dash attack inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS /Wii U andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
Grinders also appeared inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam. They are found inMount Brrr as obstacles in theTrio Drill sections. If the trio come into contact with one, they will be forced out of the dirt.
WarioWare: Get It Together![edit]
Grinders reappear inWarioWare: Get It Together! as obstacles in level 3 of theSuper Mario World microgame.
