Goomba Towers, also known asGoomba Stacks,[1] areGoombas stacked on top of each other that first appeared inSuper Mario 3D Land. They behave similarly to theDangos inSuper Mario Sunshine.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
Goomba Towers attack inSuper Mario 3D Land by running at the player and attempting to hit them in a similar fashion to individual Goombas. Goomba Towers can be shortened or defeated depending on how many Goombas the stack has. For example, attacking a stack of four will reduce it to three, and so on. Alternatively, they can be defeated all at once with aGround Pound or asStatue Mario. They can be defeated one-at-a-time by beingjumped on, being hit with a fireball or boomerang, being hit withTanooki Mario's tail or being hit while Mario is invincible.
Three Goomba Towers are seen in Peach'sLetters. Two try to attack her when she attempts to escape, but she defeats one withher parasol (apparently getting a1-Up in the process). Another Goomba Tower is later seen chasing Peach withBowser and his other minions. During the credits, Bowser is seen on top of a massive Goomba Tower, trying to reach Mario, who is carrying Peach home in his Tanooki form, though the tower falls over due to Bowser's weight.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Goomba Towers reappear inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, and can be defeated by the same methods as before. They can be affected by theGold Ring, where they function the same asGold Goombas.
They first appear inWorld 1-1, where the first one appears before theCheckpoint Flag, and two more appear right in front of theGoal Pole. If Mario defeats Goombas in a Goomba Tower without fully defeating the tower, and then walks offscreen, the Goomba Tower will go back to the original number of Goombas.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
Goomba Towers once again return as common enemies in the gameSuper Mario 3D World and itsNintendo Switch portSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Once again, their attack pattern is simply to try to ram Mario or his allies. Some Goomba Towers have aFire Bro at the top, and defeating it will instantly take out the whole tower. Goomba Towers can also hold objects such asGreen Stars, power-ups, andCoins. Some Goomba Towers can be found with all the Goombas sleeping. In theBowser’s Fury campaign, Cat Goombas can appear stacked up on top of each other.
Super Mario Maker /Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS /Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Goomba Towers reappear inSuper Mario Maker,Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Mario Maker 2. They are created when the player stacks multiple Goombas on top of each other when creating a level. Big Goomba Towers can be created by stackingBig Goombas that were enlarged by aSuper Mushroom. They cannot be made in theSuper Mario 3D World style due to the inability to stack enemies, despite Goomba Towers existing in the original game.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Goomba Towers reappear as enemies inSuper Mario Odyssey, making their first appearance in a sandbox-styled game. They can be found in most of the kingdoms in the game, and attack by running into Mario as with other Goombas. If one or more of the bottom three or so Goombas in a Goomba Tower are defeated, the rest of the Goomba Tower remains intact. If a Goomba Tower falls intoquicksand, every Goomba in the tower is incapacitated as they sink. When the lowermost Goomba dies, the tower splits into its component Goombas.
There are two ways tocapture a Goomba Tower. One is to throwCappy at them, the same way the player can capture anything else in the game. The other is to capture a Goomba and jump onto another Goomba or Goomba Tower, combining both into a single Goomba Tower. If the latter Goomba is wearing a hat, it loses that hat when it joins the tower. A captured Goomba Tower can jump onto another Goomba Tower to combine both towers as well. A captured Goomba Tower can perform the same actions a captured Goomba can. While Cappy only rests on the topmost Goomba of a Goomba Tower, Mario is in fact possessing every Goomba in a Goomba Tower at the same time, as shown by how any of them being hit means Mario takes damage. If a captured Goomba Tower sinks into quicksand, every Goomba in the tower is incapacitated but the bottom one is temporarily freed by jumping in the same way Mario does. If a captured Goomba Tower falls apart due to bottom-most Goomba dying by quicksand, Mario is forced out of the Goomba Tower.
Unlike most enemies, Goomba Towers do not get dazed when Mario releases them. In certain scenarios, such as jumping into the edge of a platform, a lower Goomba can be separated from the others. That Goomba will be dazed.
Captured Goomba Towers are the only characters in the game that can activateGoomba buttons, and only do so if the number of Goombas in the Goomba Tower is equal to or exceeds the number listed on the button. Goomba Towers also can be used for grab collectibles such asregional coins orPower Moons that are placed too high for Mario to reach.Goombette, who gives a Power Moon to Mario if he comes up to her while capturing a Goomba, is often placed on ledges too high to reach as a Goomba without a Goomba Tower. Releasing a tall Goomba Tower can be used to reach platforms that are similarly too high for Mario alone. These elements mean that areas with Goombas often revolve around using them to form a Goomba Tower for a task.
Yoofoe is a large enemy that flies and drops Goombas. The primary means of damaging it is to use the Goombas to form a Goomba Tower tall enough that Mario can release the Goombas to stomp the Yoofoe. Doing so will cause the Yoofoe to destroy all the Goombas in the arena, so Mario has to assemble a second Goomba Tower to stomp it a second time to defeat it. All the while, Yoofoe moves around the arena with blades sticking out from it that threaten to damage tall Goomba Towers.
The maximum number of Goombas there can be in a Goomba Tower legitimately is 30. This can be done in theDarker Side, in the area with the Yoofoe. The game itself can actually handle up to 200 Goombas in a stack before theNintendo Switch crashes.[2]
Mario Party series[edit]
Mario Party 9[edit]
Goomba Towers appear inMario Party 9 in theGoomba Spottingminigame, where players attempt to count the total number of Goombas that run across the screen as accurately as possible. Sometimes,Buzzy Beetles appear in the tower to trick the players into tallying them.
Mario Party: Island Tour[edit]
Goomba Towers appear inMario Party: Island Tour. One Goomba Tower is the first boss of theBowser's Tower mode, being fought on the fifth floor, and its boss minigame isGoomba Tower Takedown. Another appears in the boardPerilous Palace Path, and determines whether the player takes the main path or the Bowser Zone.
Mario Party 10[edit]
Only one Goomba Tower appears inMario Party 10, on theMario Board in amiibo Party.
Mario Party Superstars[edit]
Goomba Towers reappear inMario Party Superstars, reprising their roles from theMario Party 9 minigame Goomba Spotting.
Super Mario Party Jamboree[edit]
A Goomba Tower appears in the Paratroopa Flight School mode ofSuper Mario Party Jamboree, where it is a possible passenger in Koopa Paratroopa Taxi. The tower is made up of five Goombas at the start, but Goombas can fall off during the flight if balance is lost, shortening the tower.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
InPaper Mario: Sticker Star, five Goombas appear inBouquet Gardens and stack together as a Goomba Tower to bend into a wheel as part of their dramatic entrance to attackMario andKersti. The battle against them has Kersti demonstrate to Mario how theBattle Spin works. Afterwards, the five Goombas are defeated in battle and subsequently surrender.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
InPaper Mario: Color Splash, a group of five Goombas go into a Goomba Tower before becoming aGoomba Wheel inSacred Forest, similar toPaper Mario: Sticker Star.
Mario Golf: World Tour[edit]
InMario Golf: World Tour, Hole 13 ofMario's Star depicts four Goombas, three of which are in a Goomba Tower.
Mario Tennis Fever[edit]
InMario Tennis Fever, a Goomba Tower in the pyramid formation fromMario Kart Tour is the entrance of the Goomba during a Tennis Match. Traditional Goomba Towers also appear in the Curve Control game of the Adventure mode'sMushroom Tennis Academy.

Mario Kart 8 /Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]
Goomba Towers reappear inMario Kart 8 andMario Kart 8 Deluxe as obstacles inMario Circuit. They also appear in theMario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass in theTour Singapore Speedway course, replacing theSidesteppers inMario Kart Tour. If theLightning item is used, the Goomba Towers will fall apart. They will reform similarly to aPokey about a second later.
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
Goomba Towers reappear inMario Kart Tour, exclusively appearing in the "Goomba Takedown" challenges. Hitting one of the Goombas with an item will cause them to fall, as will driving into them. They are awarded a number of points equivalent to the amount of Goombas in the stack.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]
Goomba Towers return inCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DSports, acting the same as they did inSuper Mario 3D World.
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]
Goomba Towers are one of the enemy species forGoombas inPuzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition. There are 2-Goomba Towers and 3-Goomba Towers, and appear when a Goomba ally is transformed into a Goomba Tower by using a certain amount ofGoomba Coins.
With the 2.0 update, Gold 2-Goomba Towers and Gold 3-Goomba Towers were added as new possible allies.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
At the point inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam in whichPaper Mario is introduced, a group ofPaper Goombas led by theCrinkle Goomba form a Goomba Tower to take the form of a Goomba Wheel, similarly toPaper Mario: Sticker Star.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
Goomba Towers appear as recruitable allies in theMinion Quest: The Search for Bowser mode inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, after being absent in theoriginal game. They are first encountered inGoombas Unite. Goomba Towers are melee troopers, and they attack by running into enemies. TheirSpecial Skill, Whomping Wallop, allows them to slam the ground, damaging all enemies in front of them, similarly toMario Party: Island Tour. They are weak againstBoomerang Bros andBeanerang Bros. Goomba Towers always appear in stacks of three.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
Goomba Towers reappear as recruitable allies in theBowser Jr.'s Journey mode inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. The player can only befriend a maximum of two Goomba Towers, in which attempting to recruit a third one forces the player to dismiss one of them. Goomba Towers are weak to boomerang attacks fromBoomerang Bros. andWendy, along with yellowShy Guys.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Brothership, Goombas form Goomba Towers for one of their attacks. These Goomba Towers charge towards Mario and Luigi, and must be jumped on or over. Arare reef of a Goomba Tower, known as Tumbling-Tower Reef, can be found in theGulchrock Sea.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games[edit]
Goomba Towers appear as obstacles inBMX Plus in theNintendo 3DS version ofMario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. They appear in both stationary and moving variants, however both have the same effect of causing a character to lose speed andRings when hit. After they have been hit by a character, the stack will fall over and will no longer be an obstacle.
Mario Sports Superstars[edit]
InMario Sports Superstars, Goomba Towers appear in theRoad to Superstar mode as enemies for the player's amiibo card balls to take down. They sometimes have a lost projectile on their head, and can be seen withBone Goombas on them as well.
Dr. Mario World[edit]
A Goomba Tower appears as a playable doctor inDr. Mario World under the nameDr. Goomba Tower, released on April 26, 2020. Dr. Goomba Tower is available as a special stage reward inWorld 22. In stage mode and versus mode, Dr. Goomba Tower's skill is to target several locations to be eliminated, which is represented by the stacked Goombas wobbling before losing their balance where the individual Goombas falling down. The amount of targets is 10 spots in stage mode and 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 targets in versus mode at level 1 to 5 (3, 5, 7, 10 and 15 respectively prior to season 7 in versus mode). When using this skill, at least one object is guaranteed to be targeted for being eliminated, while the rest are random. This skill will not target any unclearable objects, such as cages orEmpty Blocks.
Mario Strikers: Battle League[edit]
InMario Strikers: Battle League, statues of a three Goombas tall Goomba Tower appear as goal-line decorations forMushroom Hill.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
Goomba Towers can be seen inThe Super Mario Bros. Movie as a part ofBowser's army. Additionally, in a promotional clip for the film,Toad is seen defending himself fromGoombas. Upon defeating a single Goomba with his frying pan, a Goomba Tower appears and chases Toad off of the screen.
