Gold Beanies are a golden-colored and rare type ofBeanies that are found inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga,Mario & Luigi: Dream Team andMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. In each game, they are enemies that can be rarely encountered, yield lots ofcoins andexperience points and even special items and/or rare equipment when defeated, and mayflee from battle if not defeated quickly.
InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions andMario and Luigi: Dream Team, Gold Beanies are depicted with black feet instead of gold; the stem on their head is also removed in the latter game.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga /Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and its 3DS remake, Gold Beanies only appear inChucklehuck Woods and theSeabed during battles, wherePestnuts andElite Pestnuts have a chance of revealing Gold Beanies if they take enough damage. They have the same attack patterns as normal Beanies, running in front ofMario orLuigi and charging into them, which can be dodged or countered byjumping; they may trip on their face before charging, which can be predicted by watching how close they are to the target. However, they have higher stats than normal Beanies, and are more likely to flee from battle than attack. Gold Beanies in the Seabed merely float up to the surface once revealed, preventing them from being fought; however, this still counts as defeating them, with the usual rewards given. Gold Beanies always drop aSpike Badge upon defeat, which allow Mario or Luigi tojump on spiked enemies when equipped. If theGame Boy Horror SP is used, it will yield aChuckola Badge instead.
InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, Gold Beanies reprise their previous roles, but have a higher chance to dropSuper Syrups than Spike Badges. Gold Beanies also appear as enemies inMinion Quest: The Search for Bowser, where they are melee troopers, and attack by ramming into the minions; TheirSpecial Skill is Mega Tackle. Gold Beanies appear as enemy captains at the end of the levelsGold Beanie Appears,Gold Beanie Returns,Gold Beanie Spotted!,Gold Beanie Fights Back!, andGold Beanie's Final Stand, rewarding the player with a high amount of EXP upon defeat. They are weak againstPrince Peasley.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]
Gold Beanies appear as enemies inMario & Luigi: Dream Team, and are also calledGolden Beanies in the British English version. After coming back fromDream's Deep through theDreamy Pi'illo Castle entrance, the player will encounter a Gold Beanie escaping from DreamyBroque Monsieur. He will explain that this Gold Beanie is a very rare and powerful enemy that only appears in dreams, and is said to grant legendary loot to whoever can defeat it. After this, a Gold Beanie may rarely be found inDream World areas.
On the field, Gold Beanies stand around. When the Bros. approach, it starts to run away. If the player flees from a battle with a Gold Beanie, then after it regains collision it jumps offscreen and vanishes.
Gold Beanies appear in battle with no other enemies. They are one of the most powerful enemies the player can encounter, with the highest defense rating of any enemy in the game at 950. However, the turn after they perform an attack, they will run away. This can be prevented by successfully countering the prior attack, which causes them to fall over. They are able to stand up to attack again. Gold Beanies are immune to fire attacks, soLuiginary Flame deals no damage to them. Gold Beanies have three attacks.
One attack has Gold Beanie run in circles, colliding with Mario. The player has to jump to avoid this attack. every time Mario stomps it, it reverses direction and becomes faster. Sometimes, a rock may appear, causing the Gold Beanie to trip. This slows down the Gold Beanie, changing the timing of the attack. If Mario fails to jump on the Gold Beanie enough times within a short period of time, it will run back to its original position.
In the second attack, the Gold Beanie will charge directly at Mario. This is countered with the hammer, but each counter only pushes Gold Beanie back. It repeats a few times, getting faster with each charge. If the Gold Beanie is glowing red, it will jump onto Mario instead of just tackling him, requiring a delayed hammer swing compared to the normal timing. If Gold Beanie connects, it returns to its original position.
In the final attack, the Gold Beanie will run from the background, summoning many Beanies to attack Mario. It will hide behind one of the Beanies initially, and switch between Beanies as the attack progresses; the one hiding it will be sparkling. One at a time, the Beanies will charge forward to hit Mario. If the player fails to avoid getting hit or to jump on the Gold Beanie, the attack will end, and Mario will take damage. (If the Gold Beanie gets past Mario, it reveals itself and unavoidably jumps into Mario.) However, if the player jumps on the Gold Beanie, all the Beanies will be shocked, and the Gold Beanie will start to sweat, making it fall.
Defeating a Gold Beanie results in a variety of loot, including a large amount of coins and experience points, as well as a DXBean of a random type. After defeating six of them, they may sometimes drop a rare piece of equipment. It has the most possible drops of any enemy in the game and the wholeMario & Luigi series, with three different pieces of gear and six different DX bean types among its possible drops; the gear items also drop as small Gifts, rather than the large Gifts used in most cases.
