Glohm Bowser,Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Glohm Bowser is the formBowser takes after being infused withGlohm by theZok Troops' Glohmatic Quad-Ray inMario & Luigi: Brothership. He is fought during the first visit toFortress Zokket. In this form, Bowser has a red outline, his eyes glow yellow, and he wears jet boots and red spiked bands around his legs; his arm bands, despite having a red glow, still retain their prior coloration from his normal form. His strength is also amplified, allowing him to manipulate Glohm to his advantage.

History[edit]

At the end of Mario and Luigi's first excursion intoFortress Zokket, the two reach the top floor in time to witness Bowser confronting Zokket and theExtension Corps, trying to rescueBowser Jr. However, seeing potential in Bowser's raw power, Zokket resorted to parking the fortress in theCenter of Concordia, and firing the Glohmatic Quad-Ray from the fourGreat Lighthouses directly at him, turning him into Glohm Bowser. Having turned feral due to hisGlohm infection, Bowser turns his attention on the Bros., leading to the fourth major boss battle in the game.

After Glohm Bowser's defeat, he drops the fifthPower Tap, before fainting and reverting to his normal form, leaving Bowser Jr. to tend to him. Eventually, the two managed to escape the fortress through unknown methods.

Battle[edit]

Glohm Bowser is a level 36 enemy, who is constantly afloat unless he is stunned, making him immune to all hammer attacks, Green Shell, and Clockout Blow. As the king of the Koopa Army, a Glohm-infected enemy, and a flying enemy, he is affected by the three corresponding "Specialist"Battle Plugs. Throughout the battle, Glohm Bowser will occasionally take a turn to partially infuse the ground with Glohm by slamming his fist onto his side of the arena, infecting any nearby Zok Troops with it, until eventually it spreads to the entire arena, causing Mario and Luigi to always take a small amount of damage at the end of Glohm Bowser's turn.

Glohm Bowser can use various moves against the Bros., some reminiscent of his moveset from hisprevious fight.

  • Glohm Bowser may shrink into his shell anddash around the Bros., occasionally closing in to hit one of them, or jumping up to drop onto his target. Before he does either, a "woosh" sound plays to indicate the incoming attack. Mario and Luigi must use their hammers to defend themselves when Glohm Bowser closes in on his victim.
  • He may attempt to face off against one of the brothers, alternating between breathing fire at the target, throwing a quick punch, do a ground pound that stuns the target and create several Glohm shockwaves, or jumping aside to target the other brother.
  • Starting in the second arena, he may summon two large pipes that hide the Bros. entirely and spin around the arena to disorient the player, before shooting a fireball into each pipe, requiring the player to know which brother is in the pipe before the fireball hits in order to parry it. If Glohm Bowser created a Glohm puddle on his side of the arena, the player can use that as a tell as to which Bro. is inside which pipe; if the puddle appears in the background, Mario is in the left pipe with Luigi in the right pipe.
  • Glohm Bowser may call some Zok Troopers or aShy Guy Airtub to battle, the former of which might become their Glohm variants if the pool of Glohm under Glohm Bowser is big enough. The Zok Troopers will perform their usual attacks, and the Shy Guy Airtubs will fire cannon shots either at or around the Bros, which can be batted back into Glohm Bowser with hammer strikes.
  • Finally, Glohm Bowser can continuously spit a stream of fire, requiring Mario and Luigi to either jump over or stay under the flame as it sweeps across the arena at alternating altitudes. At the end of this attack, Glohm Bowser will fly at one of the brothers. If Mario and Luigi get hit several times by the fire breath beforehand, Glohm Bowser will cease the attack and not fly at them. This attack is only performed in the third and final arena.

Glohm Bowser's attacks can inflict the Glohm status effect, and his fire-based attacks canfreeze Mario and Luigi. After the second Luigi Logic, Glohm Bowser becomes more powerful, boasting a higher Attack and Defense, and is more likely to move multiple times per turn.

If enough damage is dealt to him in one attack, Glohm Bowser might start to stumble. If this repeats enough times, he will eventually become dazed, dropping onto the ground and become briefly immobile, though he usually recovers within one turn. During this period, hammer attacks will not miss, and attempts to useLuigi Logic against Glohm Bowser will not be interrupted.

Luigi Logic[edit]

The option to use Luigi Logic during this battle appears whenever a Shy Guy Airtub is on standby in the background. However, it can only be used if Glohm Bowser is stunned, since he would otherwise destroy the airtub before Luigi can manage to board it. (If this happens,Snoutlet comments on how the fact that Bowser "lost each and every one of his marbles" sabotaged the Luigi Logic.) If this condition is met, Luigi successfully hijacks the airtub with Mario's help, and the two fly away with Glohm Bowser hot in pursuit.

While fleeing on the airtub, the Bros. can useLeft Stick to control the ship, andB Button to fire the cannon at Glohm Bowser and do additional damage, though this ends after a set amount of time had passed, or if Glohm Bowser successfully hits the airtub once. The second time lasts much longer than the first time. Regardless of the time spent in air, the Bros. will crash land on a different area, resetting Glohm Bowser's attempt to infect the whole arena with Glohm. During the Luigi Logic, Glohm Bowser breathes fire and can briefly create a shield which causes cannonballs to ricochet off him and can damage the airship. In the second attempt, Glohm Bowser may charge a punch attack which can be cancelled by getting hit with a cannonball once. If Glohm Bowser uses the punch attack, cannonballs will ricochet off him.

After doing this twice, no more Shy Guy Airtubs will arrive to assist Glohm Bowser, and thus, Luigi Logic cannot be activated again. Therefore, Mario and Luigi must work fast to win the fight after the second Luigi Logic before Glohm Bowser summons his Glohm puddle and extends it to their side.

Trivia[edit]

  • If Glohm Bowser is defeated with a counterattack on the same turn where the Glohm on the ground reaches the Bros. to damage them, some visual glitches may occur with the death animation, result screen, and level up screen.[5]
  • Glohm Bowser follows the trend of each title of theMario and Luigi series having its own alternate form of Bowser (Bowletta,Shrowser,Dark Bowser,Dreamy Bowser, andShiny RoboBowser respectively). Unlike them, however, Glohm Bowser is not fought at the very end of the game.
