Giant cogs[1] are obstacles inSuper Mario Galaxy 2. They are giant rolling stone gears that feature cuts on their surface whereMario (orLuigi) can take shelter to avoid getting squashed, as this directly causes him to lose a life. Giant cogs are generated indefinitely from the sky, causing them to fall from very high, which creates cracks in the ground.
Giant cogs only appear inClockwork Ruins Galaxy in the mission, "Time for Adventure," on theRolling Drum Planet. When the player lands on the planet, several giant cogs will be rolling down the ramp. The player must use the giant cogs' cuts to proceed; however occasionally, there will be holes in the ramp, making the passage more difficult. Near the end, the player will encounter the spawn point where the giant cogs fall, so they must time their movements carefully to avoid being crushed. Upon reaching the top of the planet and nearing the end of the mission, the player must press aGround-Pound Switch to make a ramp appear, allowing access to thePower Star. However, shortly after, giant cogs will appear, falling from the sky. In this case, the player must not go under the giant cogs, but rather ride them to reach the Power Star and complete the mission. TheGreen Star 3 requires the player, instead of going to the power star, to stay longer on the giant cog in order to jump at the precise moment before the giant cog falls into the void and get theGreen Star.

Naming[edit]
The English edition of theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia refers to the obstacle as a "Millstone".[2] Because this obstacle waslumped into theMillstone article on the Super Mario Wiki prior to 2026, the application of this name in the encyclopedia is potentially a consequence ofcircular reporting.
