Gearmo,Super Mario Galaxy

Gearmos are aspecies introduced inSuper Mario Galaxy. They are usually seen in industrialized galaxies, and are pictured as maintenance robots that often adviseMario. Their name is derived from the Spanish name Guillermo (equivalent to William in English, pronounced "gee-AIR-mo"), and the word "gear".

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

A green Gearmo from Super Mario Galaxy
A green Gearmo, in theEngine Room

Gearmos are supporting characters inSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport. Two similar-looking green Gearmos appear in the ammo depots in theBattlerock Galaxy and in theDreadnought Galaxy. They find it distasteful thattrash is being thrown on their planet, and they ask Mario if he wants to dispose of it byblowing it up. If Mario manages to destroy all the garbage before the time runs out, they will reward him with aPower Star. Gearmos also appear in theToy Time Galaxy, where many of them live. In the levelHeavy Metal Mecha-Bowser, many of them are trapped insideMecha-Bowser's head and are freed after Mario destroys the robot byground pounding the stack ofstone wheels on the robot's head. In theBuoy Base Galaxy, Gearmos take care of the Buoy Base, for it is not currently in use, and in theGrand Finale Galaxy, Gearmos monitor the guests at theStar Festival and preventing littering. A green Gearmo also appears in theEngine Room of theComet Observatory, being the only non-playable character other thanPolari in a dome.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

The gold and silver Gearmos

Gearmos are supporting characters inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and itsNintendo Switchport. Two of them host similar minigames to theBob-omb Blasting minigame in theRightside Down Galaxy and theUpside Dizzy Galaxy. This time around, they give Mario aFire Flower, and ask him to burn up all thecrates in twenty seconds or less. If Mario succeeds, he will be given aPower Star.

Two Gearmos later appear in theTall Trunk Galaxy'sPrankster Comet mission. One at the top of the slide claims to have lost 140Purple Coins and asks Mario to get them for it. If Mario manages to get 100 of the 140 Purple Coins, the Gearmo at the bottom of the slide will give Mario a Power Star. A green Gearmo also appears inRolling Coaster Galaxy's Prankster Comet, giving Mario the star if he succeeds in getting 100 of the 110 Purple Coins. They also appear in theChompworks Galaxy. Here, they seem to testChomps, sometimes letting them crash into them seemingly for the thrill of it.

When special missions are completed in theBoulder Bowl Galaxy andSpace Storm Galaxy, two Gearmos, agold Gearmo and asilver Gearmo, respectively, will join Mario in his adventures onStarship Mario, and give him a1-Up Mushroom when talked to.

In this game, when hit withStar Bits or spun at, their heads will spin around.

Minecraft[edit]

In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack forMinecraft, copper golems and their statue variants are retextured to look like Gearmos.

Characteristics and traits[edit]

Mario must blow up all this garbage to get the Power Star
Gearmo greeting Mario in Battlerock Galaxy

Some Gearmos can be perceived as irritable, as well as obsessed with tidiness. For instance, the Bob-omb Blasting Gearmos become furious if Mario or Luigi does not complete the minigame. Another one gets angry at him for destroying a giant weight holding down a tower, and another warns Mario to not let it catch him littering.

The Gearmos' torso can come in a variety of different colors including green, blue, yellow, and pink. They also have a large gear inside the back of their heads. If Mario jumps on the gear, it pops out and falls back into place. Gearmos are capable of moving without the gear, suggesting that the gear has no real purpose. If the player gets zero Purple Coins in the Battlerock Galaxy, the Gearmo at the end will refer to itself as "this old iron lady", indicating Gearmos have genders, despite being robots. The Japanese name indicates they may all be "old ladies" while most of their names in other languages such as Spanish use feminine terms for their names further implying that they may all be female. However, this is contradicted in theChompworks Galaxy where one Gearmo who is being run over by Chain Chomps is referred to using masculine pronouns.

Language[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, Gearmos speak in theKansai dialect, a non-standard dialect commonly used in Japanese media to indicate that a speaker is humorous or witty.
  • In the Korean version, they talk in a Southeastern dialect.
  • In the French version, they speak with a stereotypical Québécois accent.
  • In the Spanish version, they speak with a stereotypical Andalusian accent.

Profiles[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy trading card[edit]

ImageNameDescription
Gearmo trading cardGearmoIt's good to have a robot ally when traveling through challenging galaxies such as the Dreadnought or Battlerock. Gearmos are mechanical friends that hold magnets on the end of their wands and have gears on their heads. They are in charge of keeping the ammo depots clean in these areas. But to do this, Gearmos need Mario's help. Throw Bob-ombs at their trash heaps, and if successful within 30 seconds, the prize for Mario is a Power Star!
