Wario,Wario Land: Shake It! manual

Garlic appears as a recurring item in theWario franchise, as well as sometimes being associated with Wario in his other appearances. It isWario's favorite food, often functioning as a beneficial item that heals Wario or gives him strength. In theWarioWare series, garlic often represents the player'slives in Wario's stages. Wario is said to eat whole cloves of garlic constantly, making him smell bad as a result.[1]

History[edit]

Wario franchise[edit]

Wario Land series[edit]

InWario Land: Super Mario Land 3, a type of garlic power-up called theGarlic Pot appears. It turnsSmall Wario into normal Wario, and normal Wario intoBull Wario. It returns inVirtual Boy Wario Land as the garlic bottle.

InWario Land 3, garlic represents the Super Smash treasure that Wario has to collect. Once found in theTower of Revival, after Wario opens the blue snake door, it will confer him the ability to break solid blocks. Also inWario Land 3, several heads of garlic can be seen hanging from some platforms inForest of Fear; if Wario is transformed into avampire and touches a garlic head, he instantly reverts to his regular form.

In thepre-release versions ofWario Land 4, the Heart Gauge was shorter and had a garlic icon next to it, implying that Wario originally had to collect garlic rather thanlittle hearts to recover his Heart Meter.

InWario Land: Shake It!, garlic restores hearts in Wario's life meter. Shaking an enemy will occasionally cause it to drop a head of garlic, which will start bouncing on the ground until collected. Most enemies' garlic only restores one heart, while some enemies (such as the whiteBandinero) release a bigger type which restores three hearts.

Wario World[edit]

InWario World, garlic heals Wario, andGarlic Dispensers vend heads of it to him in exchange forcoins. They are also sometimes found inwooden chests.

WarioWare series[edit]

InWarioWare: Twisted!, garlic represents the lives the player has inWario-Man's stage.

The "Nasty Garlic" fromWarioWare: Touched!

InWarioWare: Touched!, Wario eats a "Nasty Garlic" inWario-Man's intro cutscene and transforms into Wario-Man. After themicrogames are beaten for the first time, it will then appear on the main selection screen so that Wario can turn back into Wario-Man at any time.

Garlic reprises its role fromWarioWare: Twisted! inWario-Man's stage.

Wario: Master of Disguise[edit]

InWario: Master of Disguise, garlic is one of the five kinds of falling objects that appear in theminigameTrash It. When garlic appears, it must be dropped into the mouth to score. Garlic also appears as one of the possible images shown duringTrick Slider and one of the shapes the blue dot needs to be traced through inZappy Path.

WarioWare: Smooth Moves[edit]

InWarioWare: Smooth Moves, garlic represents the lives the player has in Wario's stage,Mysterious Form Baton Found!. This is the first time regular Wario has had lives represented by garlic.

WarioWare Gold[edit]

InWarioWare Gold, garlic again represents the lives the player has in all three of Wario's stages: Wario's Mash warm-up, Wario's Twist warm-up, and Wario's Touch warm up. Also, Garlic is a critical component of the gameWario Kard, which requires the player to spend one Garlic to challenge an opponent, The player gains one Garlic every 5 minutes, and can hold a maximum of three Garlic. If the player does not have Garlic, they can spend 500 coins instead.

WarioWare: Get It Together![edit]

InWarioWare: Get It Together!, garlic appears in the microgamesFlee the Flashlight andGarlic Catch. In Flee the Flashlight, the player has to steal garlic from Wario without being caught. In Garlic Catch, the player has to tilt a basket to collect some garlic heads that are constantly falling from the sky.

WarioWare: Move It![edit]

InWarioWare: Move It!, garlic continues to have the same role it had inWarioWare: Smooth Moves for Wario's stage,Stone-Cold Welcome.

Mario Superstar Baseball[edit]

TheWario Garlics is the common team name inMario Superstar Baseball. Wario's bio also mentions how garlic is his favorite food and may be responsible for his high stamina. A clove of garlic also appears for Wario'sPhony Ball star swing, where it appears from the fake ball that appears from the swing.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Mario Kart Arcade GP /Mario Kart Arcade GP 2[edit]

InMario Kart Arcade GP andMario Kart Arcade GP 2, Garlic is a special item for Wario. The Garlic is a recovery item. Upon being used, it will remove all bad conditions from the user's kart, such as square tires, burst tires, or Thunder Cloud. In addition, the Garlic provides a shield for approximately half a second upon being used. With good timing, this can be used to block incoming items or be immune to the explosion of a Time Bomb. InMario Kart Arcade GP, a variant of the Garlic known as the Garlic+ can be unlocked. This variant greatly increases the duration of the shield the item provides.

Mario Kart Tour /Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

InMario Kart Tour andMario Kart 8 Deluxe, garlic motifs can be seen on banners and fences in theWario-centric courseNinja Hideaway, and the Ninja Mansion's windows are shaped like heads of garlic as well.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, Wario'sFinal Smash has him eat a head of garlic to temporarily transform intoWario-Man. Wario-Man has all of Wario's moves but is faster and stronger, among other additional properties. Wario-Man'strophy has him holding up a head of garlic in his right hand while carrying a pile of garlic in his left arm.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, garlic reappears in the same capacities as it does in the prior game, except thatSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS does not have a Wario-Man trophy. In thePalutena's Guidance conversation about Wario inSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U,Palutena andPit discuss Wario's Final Smash and the events ofWarioWare: Touched! where Wario becomes Wario-Man but Palutena incorrectly calls the garlic Wario eats for the Final Smash "Nasty Garlic". Wario'sChomp attack can be switched out for Garlic Breath, which is a slow attack where Wario stuns opponents in front of him by releasing the green smell of garlic from his mouth.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Wario-Man is retooled, and so garlic's role in it is different. Instead of immediately transforming, Wario performs a dashing headbutt after eating the garlic. Wario only transforms into Wario-Man if the headbutt hits an opponent, and if he does he performs a string of attacks in a cutscene before returning to normal. While Wario performs the headbutt, he releases a cosmetic trail of green garlic breath similarly to the move Garlic Breath. The Palutena's Guidance conversation about Wario is updated to fix the error of calling a normal head of garlic "Nasty Garlic".

Mario Party 10[edit]

A head of garlic can be seen on theWario Board inMario Party 10, lying on a table-like platform at the right side of the board.
