For the former, it was released alongsideGame Boy Advance - Nintendo Switch Online on February 8, 2023 in the Americas and February 9, 2023 in most other regions, shortly following its announcement in theNintendo Direct on February 8, 2023; it was later released on September 9, 2025 in Taiwan. It is available for allNintendo Switch Online subscribers and features a library ofGame Boy andGame Boy Color games, which can be played in the Game Boy,Game Boy Pocket, or Game Boy Color screen filters. Multiplayer-compatible games such asTetris can be played with other Nintendo Switch devices locally or online.[12]

The app's version 3.0.0 update changed the app's subtitle from "Nintendo Switch Online" to "Nintendo Classics." It also added button remapping, updated the "Reproduce classic feel" screen filter, and changed the app's startup splash screen to use the sound effect of acoin fromSuper Mario Land, rather than the Game Boy and Game Boy Color's startup logo, to match with the other Nintendo Classics apps. Like theGame Boy Advance - Nintendo Classics andNintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics apps, the Game Boy's original startup screen can be seen by holding any direction onLeft Stick upon start up, with the startup being different depending on which "Game screen" option has been chosen. On the Nintendo Switch 2, the application now runs at a resolution of 1080p in handheld mode.[13]

Default button mapping[edit]

Despite the fact that only one controller can be connected to the app at a time and multiplayer requires each player to own a console, the app allows players to use a single Joy-Con.
