TheGaddlight (orGadd Light[1]), known as theBoo-Away Orb in itsOrb form seen inMario Party 6, is an item that appears in theMario Party series. It is aflashlight that can be used to preventBoo from stealing from its holder, much like theBoo Repellant fromMario Party 3. TheSnack Orb is another similar item, particularly in itsMario Party 5 incarnation as the Bone Capsule.

History[edit]

Mario Party 4[edit]

Mario prevents Boo from stealing coins from him with a Gaddlight.
Mario preventing Boo from stealing his coins inMario Party 4

The Gaddlight first appears inMario Party 4, where it can be bought from anItem Shop for 15coins. CPU players will never buy a Gaddlight.[2] When a player carrying a Gaddlight in their inventory is targeted by an opponent to have Boo steal coins or aStar from that player, the player automatically uses and consumes the Gaddlight, flashing the Boo with the item's light to scare it away. The targeted player character is seen standing and holding the Gaddlight within theBoo's Crystal Ball, rather than the usual "scared" pose used when Boo steals from a player. A player carrying a Gaddlight can use it on their turn to throw it away, though this counts as the single item use that players are allowed per turn. The Gaddlight does not protect againstBig Boo inBoo's Haunted Bash.

As the item's English name implies, the Gaddlight was invented byProfessor E. Gadd[1], alluding to his occupation as a ghost hunter and researcher inLuigi's Mansion. This is also implied by its German name, since his inventions are named Schreckweg 08/16 (Poltergust 3000) and Dreckweg 08/17 (F.L.U.D.D.). However, this connection is not present in the item's Japanese name, and it lacks the symbol of his head that is seen on most of his inventions.

Mario Party 6[edit]

The Gaddlight reappears inMario Party 6, now in Orb form as the Boo-Away Orb. The item contained within the Orb retains a similar appearance to its appearance inMario Party 4, and its Japanese name refers to the Gaddlight. The Boo-Away Orb retains the Gaddlight's effects fromMario Party 4, though it now protects againstPink Boo instead of the ordinary Boo, as Pink Boo has replaced Boo's role in the game, with Boo instead being a playable character. The Boo-Away Orb is obtainable only inTowering Treetop andCastaway Bay, as those are the only boards on which Pink Boo can be found.
