Flies are the main enemies inGnat Attack, aminigame inMario Paint. They are the only enemies in the game that are unable to cause any damage toMario. They are the first enemies to appear in the game, and are the least threatening; just dashing across the screen when they come on. As they are unable to harm Mario's hand, Mario should concentrate on its more dangerous variants before swatting these insects.
Flies were planned to appear in a Gnat Attack minigame inMario Artist: Paint Studio, which was ultimately not implemented. They would have had a very different appearance compared toMario Paint, consisting in a brown body with yellow wings and a red proboscis.
Flies appear in severalmicrogames in theWarioWare series; this includesMario Paint: Fly Swatter andFly Swatter fromWarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!,Fly Swatter fromWarioWare: D.I.Y. andMario Paint - Flyswatter fromWarioWare Gold.
Flies randomly appear in the editing mode ofSuper Mario Maker. They buzz around the screen, and can be swatted with a fly swatter, and hitting them will trigger a recreation of the Gnat Attack minigame. Flies can also be spawned by shaking aMuncher and quickly trigger Gnat Attack. Additionally, on Fridays, the title screen animation has a fly attempt to carry awayBuilder Mario. The fly is swatted before it succeeds, dropping Builder Mario off of the screen. In English releases ofSuper Mario Maker, Friday is referred to as "Flyday" until the fly is swatted. Because Gnat Attack is not available inSuper Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, Flies do not appear there or inCourse Maker, but a fly still appears during title screen animation for Friday.
InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, flies appear as part of the Flies & HandAssist Trophy.
