Floors, also calledplatforms,[1] are the blue platforms in theMario Bros. arcade game and its various ports. They have subsequently appeared in contexts alluding toMario Bros. in the franchise, as well as an independent platform in the mainlineSuper Mario series. Player characters canjump into floors from below to bend or dislodge individual segments, stunning or defeating any enemy standing on top. The gameplay mechanic of these floors has subsequently become incorporated into other games in the franchise and has become a staple of their platformers, most notably through? Blocks andBrick Blocks.
History[edit]
Mario Bros.[edit]
Floors appear as the main platforms used inMario Bros. While they function as normal platforms when the player stands on them, the player can also bump them from below to stun enemies and collectcoins on the place where the platform was bumped. Their appearance changes depending on the phase, and there are also slippery and invisible versions.
Floors reprise their roles in the various in-game ports ofMario Bros., including thebattle mode inSuper Mario Bros. 3, theBattle Game inSuper Mario All-Stars, theremake in theSuper Mario Advance games andMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and the gameLuigi Bros. inSuper Mario 3D World and itsNintendo Switchport.
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 3 /Super Mario All-Stars[edit]
In theMario Bros.–inspiredBattle Mode ofSuper Mario Bros. 3, floors[2] make up broad platforms that the player must hit from below to defeat the enemies on top. Unlike the original arcade game or the Famicom release, floors are segmented and interacted with similarly to normalblocks found in the courses: striking a segment nudges it upward, but not the segments it is continuous with. The direction the enemy flips still depends onMario orLuigi's position relative to the enemy rather than either to the block.
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Floors reappear inNew Super Mario Bros., behaving the same as in their debut game. They appear inWorld 2-2 andWorld 8-6.
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Luigi U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
Red and white platforms[3] return inNew Super Mario Bros. U,New Super Luigi U, and theirenhanced port. They are the same as before. Red and white platforms appear inScrewtop Tower,Shifting-Floor Cave, andWorld
Coin-2 inNew Super Mario Bros. U and inSumo Bro's Spinning Tower inNew Super Luigi U.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
Floors appear in theSuper Smash Bros. series in theMario Bros. stage introduced inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl and returning inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. They function the same as in the original arcade game. Bumping the platform while an opponent is on top bumps them into the air with no damage taken.
