Flipside is an interdimensional town inSuper Paper Mario, created by theAncients. Flipside is odd and irregular compared to most places in theSuper Mario franchise, introducing a whole new style of its own. There is a mirrored version of Flipside calledFlopside. The people of Flipside are pixel-like and have bodies made of separate layers, similarly to their Flopside counterparts. Unlike the people of Flopside, however, the people of Flipside have square noses as opposed to pointed noses. Flipside is the home of some very important characters, includingMerlon,Howzit the item shop owner,Saffron the chef,Merluvlee the fortune teller and many more.

Flipside has three different "floors" and two basement ones which can be accessed by elevators interconnected with each other. They are numbered sequentially in the North American version, but in thePAL version, the first floor is known as the "Ground Floor", the second floor becomes the "first floor", and the third floor becomes the "second floor". Almost every structure in Flipside, except a few places and roofs, is whitish or gray with a hint of yellow, and the sky of Flipside is also whitish-yellow, with many geometric cubes and symbols hovering about. There is an area outside of the town of Flipside, simply called the Flipside Outskirts, which seems to be a strange, interdimensional wasteland filled with monsters. Flipside also houses aPit of 100 Trials, and both Flipside and Flopside are depicted on the walls of the first 25 rooms, paired with Mario's first Pure Heart.

Within Flipside, there exist several structures calledHeart Pillars.Mario must place thePure Hearts that he finds throughout his adventure into these structures to open up a path to the next world and the next Pure Heart.Flipside Tower, located in the middle of the town, controls the flow of dimensional energy to teleport people to other worlds. Heart Pillars and a different Tower are also found in Flopside.

A city hall of Flipside is referenced by the broken-down elevators in the early stages of the game, as well as by the sign warning players of thePit of 100 Trials. Tippi's tattle of Merlon implies that he may be considered the leader of the town, as she claims that many people living there put their faith in him.

Features[edit]

Flipside Tower[edit]

Flipside Tower
Flipside Tower

Flipside Tower is a tall, white tower that has the first 7dimensional doors and an elevator in the left side leading to the base of the tower on his flat, elongated roof. If theReturn Pipe is used, the player is transported to this location. The entrance of the tower, located in the Second floor, is decorated with three circular windows and two vine-covered columns along with a glistening elevator door that leads to the tower's roof. ItsFlopside equivalent, theFlopside Tower, is black in color and only contains the final dimensional door, which leads toCastle Bleck.

Third Floor (Second Floor in PAL version)[edit]

Mario placing the First Pure Heart on its pillar

This floor consists of two parts. The innermost part features an elevator leading to the second floor and the firstHeart Pillar at the left side. It hosts the RedPure Heart, given to Mario byMerlon at the beginning of the game; the fifth Heart Pillar can be found on the same location onFlopside. AGold Bar can also be found in a grass patch by buying Map 1 fromFlamm. A few characters can be seen walking on the road:

  • Pook, a child with a yellow square head, blue body, brown shoes, and a fascination for sea creatures. He gives the heroes theHelmet after they find a new home for hispet in the first basement floor. His Flopside counterpart isPuck, who is fascinated by the sky. Puck has a blue head, light brown body and dark brown shoes along with a pointier nose.
  • Skeet, a young man studying architecture with a passion for the Flipside Tower, praising it for its simple design. He also imaginesa dark counterpart of it and shows great distaste for the idea. His Flopside counterpart isPete, an interior decorator with admiration for the Flopside Tower instead. Skeet has a rectangular turquoise head and nose, a body consisting of three thin stripes and brown shoes. Pete's head is a darker tone of blue and has a triangular nose.
  • O'Chunks, who appears only if the game has been beaten. He is seen searching forNastasia to give her some ofSaffron's treats. Nastasia is encountered in the same spot on Flopside.

The outermost part is accessed by a pipe on the second floor and features various stone pillars. The easternmost reveals aMerleeCatch Card in a treasure chest if it is removed byPiccolo. Near the pipe, there are three blocks in a row; ifTippi is used, she reveals a path of blocks directing to a platform above with a chest containingCooking Disk R.
