Flipflaps[1] (originally known asBats[2][3]) are large, blue bat enemies that first appeared inDonkey Kong 64.
History[edit]
Donkey Kong 64[edit]
InDonkey Kong 64, Bats appear inFungi Forest during nighttime, inCreepy Castle, and inCrystal Caves.Zingers replace Bats during the daytime in Fungi Forest. Bats attack the activeKong by quickly swooping at them. While Bats resemble the dive-bombing variants of Zingers, they will respawn compared to their counterparts. The Kongs can defeat Bats by either blasting them with their weapon, using their musical instrument, or by throwing anorange. They are not to be confused with the genericbats found in dark places throughout the game, which are smaller and harmless.
DK: King of Swing[edit]
SinceDK: King of Swing, Bats have been renamed to Flipflaps, and were given a slight redesign to have a more purplish body, a larger head, visible toes on their feet, and no eyebrows. Flipflaps are enemies first encountered inContraption Cave, and they most commonly appear in cave levels. They fly back and forth in either a vertical or horizontal line while swaying slightly. Flipflaps can damage the player upon contact; however, unlike inDonkey Kong 64, they do not attempt to directly target the player with an attack. The player can defeat a Flipflap by performing a charge attack.
Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast[edit]
Flipflaps inDonkey Kong: Barrel Blast are obstacles encountered inMt. Dynamite,Scorching Canyon,Mt. Dynamite Remix, andDynamite Run.
DK: Jungle Climber[edit]
Flipflaps reappear inDK: Jungle Climber, where they are introduced inCool Cool Cave and reappear mostly in caves and forest levels. Their behavior is exactly the same as inDK: King of Swing, except that they only fly in a horizontal pattern.Donkey Kong andDiddy Kong can defeat Flipflaps by performing a charge jump.
