Fire Chains,^[1] also calledFire Bars,^[2] are obstacles in theMario Kart series. They are spinningfireballs formed in a ring shape.

Fire Chains appear in all mainline games in theMario Kart series fromMario Kart: Double Dash!! onward, occasionally alongside normalFire Bars. When touched by any racer without the use of aSuper Star, they cause them to get burned and spin out.

The number of fireballs in a Fire Chain varies per course and per game. In theMario Kart: Double Dash!! version ofWaluigi Stadium they are made up of eight fireballs while theMario Kart Wii,Mario Kart 8 Deluxe andMario Kart Tour versions of the course have six. InWario Colosseum, Fire Chains contain seven fireballs. TheMario Kart DS version ofWario Stadium features Fire Chains with five fireballs, while the same course inMario Kart 8 again features Fire Chains of six fireballs. The Fire Chains in theMario Kart Wii courseBowser's Castle have three fireballs each.

Fire Chains are obstacles inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and itsNintendo Switch port. They behave the way they do in theMario Kart games, though sometimes, they go around planets instead of circling in the air. They appear in all galaxies ofBowser's Lava Lair andBowser's Galaxy Generator, as well asSlipsand Galaxy's first mission, "Squizzard's Sandy Sinkhole".

Super Mario Run[edit]

Fire Chains, also referred to asrings of fire, return inSuper Mario Run, They appear as a complete "ring of fire" rather than separate sets of fireballs. They appear only in the courseRings of Fire!. Some move up and down.Coins, includingColor coins, are often seen within the rings. Going through one without taking damage is astylish move calledThreading the Ring, and this move produces blue stars. In Toad Rally, these stars contribute to starting aCoin Rush. It also immediately gets aToad to cheer for the player.
