Falling Platforms,[1] also referred to ascrumbling platforms[2] orcrumbling walkways,[3] are platforms inSuper Mario 3D Land andSuper Mario Odyssey. When stood on, they visibly fracture and slowly descend before abruptly disappearing. They rematerialize in their original positions after a few seconds. Though similar toDonut Blocks, Falling Platforms begin to fall as soon as the player character steps on them without means of stopping it. Regardless of game, Falling Platforms seem to be made out of unstable material, be it cracked rocks or rusted metal.
History[edit]
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
Crumbling platforms debut inSuper Mario 3D Land, in which they are all made of craggy stone. Most are rectangular prisms and the same size as the Donut Blocks in the game. They first appear in the desert-themedWorld 5-2, whereMario (orLuigi) must walk along them to reach the top of theGoal Pole. They also appear inWorld 8-5 between stretches ofRed-Blue Panels suspended in a cavern, rendering stable footing rare. Large cube-shaped ones appear in the final battle withBowser inWorld 8-
Bowser's Castle: Part 2, where they alternate with stable ground up an incline. Crumbling platforms are more recurring in the special worlds, where they appear in large numbers inSpecial 1-2,Special 4-5, andSpecial 8-1. In Special 4-5, crumbling platforms are the only platforms available for much of the level.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
InSuper Mario Odyssey, Falling Platforms, also referred to ascrumbling metal panels,[4]collapsing platforms,[5] andfragile platforms,[5] are made of metal. In theWooded Kingdom, cautionary yellow stripes are painted along their tops. Falling Platforms are needed to climb the Crumbling Tower to obtain twoPower Moons, one of which requires Mario to bring anUproot on this tower through these platforms. Falling Platforms in this kingdom slowly sink down upon contact before breaking in the air. Falling Platforms later reappear in theMetro Kingdom, where they appear insideNew Donk City Hall. Here, they are of a broader shape and uniform orange color. They also break faster. These objects also appear in the Vanishing Roadsub-areas of the aforementioned kingdom and theDark Side.
Vibrantvanishing platforms similar to Falling Platforms appear during a Timer Challenge in theLuncheon Kingdom, and giantones made of moon rocks appear in theUnderground Moon Caverns.
