Fall
Fall,[1] orAutumn,[1] is an unlockable aesthetic alteration inSuper Mario World and itsGame Boy Advance remake,Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2. This event changes the appearance of certain enemies and alters the color palette of the overworld map ofDinosaur Land to reflect the change of season from Spring. The theme is unlocked by completingFunky in theSpecial Zone; inSuper Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, it is unlocked bycompleting all 96 exits. Once these prerequisites are reached, the changes will take effect, preceded by a short cutscene in the GBA remake. In the cutscene,Luigi is shown on ahot-air balloon tossing masks down with a message stating"Mario and Luigi have found all of the goals. Congratulations!!! Now you can play a slightly different Dinosaur Land!" After this, Mario is seen running, where hejumps on aKoopa Troopa and takes its shell. A mask falls, and the Koopa walks to it and starts wearing it. The scene then returns to Luigi tossing masks, withCaped Mario attending Luigi.Super Koopas then appear, which then carry a large banner reading "CONGRATULATIONS," and Mario and Luigi flash theirV sign to the player.
Fall causes Dinosaur Land to change color, with green objects becoming orange-brown and brown places becoming green. The water also becomes teal in color. Everywhere on the overworld map is affected, including places such as theValley of Bowser. Although the visual appearance of Dinosaur Land's overworld map is changed, the visual appearance of the levels is not affected. The intro ofSuper Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 shows Dinosaur Land in Fall at the start and end. Once Fall is activated, its changes are irreversible for that save file.
Various enemies have their designs changed in Fall, including on menus and during the credits. In the originalSuper Mario World, these enemies receive new names in the credits, while in its Game Boy Advance remake, their names do not change.
- Piranha Plants,Jumping Fire Piranha Plants, andJumping Piranha Plants have jack-o'-lantern heads, and the latter are also known asJumping Pumpkin Plants. While not an enemy,Beanstalks also undergo this change.
- Bullet Bills becomePidgit projectiles and are also known as Pidgit Bills. In the originalSuper Mario World only, there is a quirk that causes the diagonal and vertical Bullet Bills ofVanilla Dome 4 to not change. They also visibly flap their wings in the GBA remake.
- Koopa Troopas andKoopa Paratroopas wear Mario Bros. masks[2] instead of Koopa shells, and the former are also known as Mask Koopas.
- In some levels, this also causes any Green Koopa Troopas andtheir shells to become Yellow, and Red Koopa Troopas andtheir shells to become Blue. However, this does not apply to any standaloneunshelled Koopas or any other Koopa Troopa species.
- WhenBuzzy Beetles are inside theirshell, they immediately come out without warning rather than shaking before they start coming out and moving again.
- Goombas are yellow and wear sunglasses (Super Mario Advance 2 only).
- Pokeys' segments turn into saws (Super Mario Advance 2 only).
- The intro forSuper Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 and the title screen demo ofGroovy change the enemies to their available Fall form, and the credits sequence of both games show enemies in their Fall form.
In the mangaSuper Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World 4 from theSuper Mario Kodansha series, Fall is considered to be the result of Bowser's domain over the Dinosaur Land, while Mario was training in the Star World and the Special Zone. The land becomes a wasteland inhabited byPidgits that are pecking at carcasses and Jumping Pumpkin Plants. Masks Koopas are disguises that the Koopas take to trapYoshi, but even after capturing him, they still keep wearing it. After defeating Bowser, Dinosaur Land is restored to its natural glory.
InSuper Mario-kun, in chapter 7 ofvolume 2, Mario gets shocked by anON/OFF Switch and wakes up in a dimension whereYoshi's Island is in Fall. Mario is stunned, seeing the strange enemies (especially the Koopas with his face) and a violentYoshi. Enemies such asBoos,Monty Moles,Para-Goombas, andPokeys also have Fall variants here despite never having any in the originalSuper Mario World. After creating a giant shockwave with aDragon Coin, Mario wakes up in the normal world, happy to see his brother and a gullible and always hungry Yoshi. In the next chapter, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi face against a Jumping Pumpkin Plant, although in the normal world and not during the Fall.

Notes[edit]
- InSuper Mario World,Goomba hasduplicate sprites meant for the Fall theme, albeit none forPara-Goomba. It is possible that it was meant to have a Fall-themed design beforeSuper Mario Advance 2.
- Amongearly assets forSuper Mario World is a flower-headed,Toad-like creature, believed to be intended for the Fall theme ofPiranha Plant, along with aJumping Piranha Plant version resembling aFire Flower.
- Incidentally, the fall enemies seen inSuper Mario-kun somewhat resemble the enemies that appear when playing asBig Mario inSuper Mario Maker due to having Mario-based designs regardless of enemy type.

- ^"COMPLETING ALL GOALS When you complete all 96 goals inSuper Mario World, you get another short movie. This one starts out with Luigi, in a hot-air balloon, throwing what appear to be Mario Bros. masks over the side. A message appears, saying that you can now play a slightly different Dinosaur Land. What the heck? The scene switches to Mario, on the ground, booting a Koopa Troopa out of his Shell and running off. One of Luigi’s Mario Bros. masks falls near him. The poor Koopa, feeling a little exposed, puts on the mask to become some sort of peculiar bobble-head version of Mario. We return to Luigi in the hot-air balloon, still chucking masks over the side. Mario flies into the balloon, and a “CONGRATULATIONS” banner floats across the top of the balloon, with an invitation to press START. When you press START, you return to Dinosaur Land, but it is different. The color scheme has gone from spring greens and yellows to autumnal oranges and browns. All of your completed goals are still completed, but some of your enemies take on a different appearance. There’s no in-game benefit to completing all the goals again, but if you want to check out the new decor, go ahead." – Stratton, Bryan (February 26, 2002).Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2–Prima’s Official Strategy Guide.Prima Games (American English).
