Puni elder,Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

TheEmerald Star is the second of theCrystal StarsMario collects inPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, obtained upon completing Chapter 2: The Great Boggly Tree.

According to the legend of the Crystal Stars as told byGrifty, the Emerald Star was given to thePunies to guard as a favor of theGoombahero for saving them from monsters. The Goomba hollowed out alarge tree for the Punies to make their home in, where the Emerald Star has since been guarded.[1] The task of protecting the Emerald Star from "evil" and giving it to a "pure heart" would go on to be passed down generations of Puni elders to the present day.

During Mario's adventure, theX-Nauts take over the Great Tree in search for the Emerald Star and capture many of the Punies living inside. As Mario rescues the Punies, he discovers the location of the Emerald Star in the tree's basement. However, the leader of the X-Naut team,Lord Crump, quickly steals the Emerald Star once it is revealed. In an effort to keep the Emerald Star to himself, Lord Crump activates a time bomb while he makes his way to the entrance, only to be stopped by thePuni elder, allowing Mario and hispartners to catch up with him. Crump then deactivates the system and fights Mario inMagnus von Grapple. After defeating the mech and recovering the Emerald Star, the Puni elder allows Mario to have it, as he has proved himself to be a "pure heart" by saving the Great Tree. Collecting the Emerald Star teaches Mario the moveClock Out to use in battle.

During the final battle with theShadow Queen, when the Crystal Stars spread out to the locations in which they were found, the Emerald Star returns to the Great Tree, where the Punies are alerted of the situation Mario and his team are in and cheer them on before the final round.
