Egg Pawns are a crossover species from theSonic the Hedgehog franchise and one ofDr. Eggman'smany creations. Egg Pawns in theSuper Mario franchise appear only in theMario & Sonic series, beginning withMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Egg Pawns usually appear withinDream Events, but they also appear as extra team members in certainevents that require larger team sizes.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games[edit]
Egg Pawns are obstacles inDream Race in theWii version.[1] A pair of them appear as obstacles on the track moving at a slow speed. If a player character crashes into an Egg Pawn, it explodes, stunning the character temporarily,[2] but Egg Pawns do respawn shortly afterward.
Egg Pawns are targets featured inDream Shooting in theNintendo DS version, in addition to a variety with a shield requiring multiple shots to destroy. The final boss is a giant Egg Pawn with a shield, and it requires several hits to destroy, and the last player to destroy it earns a large point bonus.[3] Egg Pawns are also enemies to hit inShoot! and a character to sort inConveyor Belt.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games[edit]
In theWii version, Egg Pawns appear as basic obstacles in both theIndividual andTeam versions of Dream Alpine and theIndividual andTeam versions of Dream Snowboard Cross, where they cause the player to fall over and lose speed when hit. The Egg Pawns can be destroyed if they hit by a character under the effects of theSuper Star. Egg Pawns are featured in the Sonic World version ofDream Figure Skating, where the characters defeat them by jumping fromSprings.[4]
In theNintendo DS version, Egg Pawns appear inExtreme Snowboarding, serving the same purpose as in the Wii version.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games[edit]
Egg Pawns sometimes spawn inDream Fencing in theWii version. If a character hits an Egg Pawn, they take damage,[5] but a single thrust destroys it.[6] There is an unlockableMii outfit based on an Egg Pawn.
Egg Pawns appear in theNintendo 3DS version, throwing balls at the goal being defended by the player inHandball and serving as a defender and a goalie each inFootball each. In the game's Story Mode, an Egg Pawn initially appears with anEgg Flapper to attackOmochao and aChao inJunior, Super Hero?,[7] but are defeated byBowser Jr. Abadge of an Egg Pawn can also be obtained from the badge machine.
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games[edit]
An Egg Pawn appears only in the form of an unlockable Mii outfit inMario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games[edit]
In theWii U version, different colors of Egg Pawns appear as a selectable set of three extra team mates forRugby Sevens andDuel Rugby Sevens, and as a selectable goalie forFootball andDuel Football. The Egg Pawn Mii outfit returns but has to now be collected in two separate head and body parts.
In theNintendo 3DS version Egg Pawns appear as the teammates forJet andShadow inFootball andFootball Plus, with Shadow also having an armored variety. An Egg Pawn is also one of the goalies. An Egg Pawn also operates the mechanical hurdles in110m Hurdles Plus.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[edit]
Egg Pawns' most recent appearance in theSuper Mario franchise and final appearance in theMario & Sonic series is inMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as goalies inFootball and extra teammates inRugby Sevens in, but only if the team's captain is from theSonic the Hedgehog series. Egg Pawns are colored either red or blue, depending on which team they are on. Egg Pawns are also enemies in several of the story mode minigames.
