Eep Cheeps[1] are a variant ofCheep Cheep that is orange in color and has a lighter yellow color to its fin. Unlike other types of Cheep Cheeps, they swim away fromMario when he gets close. Their name is a combination of the species name "Cheep Cheep" and "eep," a short scream of fright in reference to their "cowardly" demeanor.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Eep Cheep from New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Eep Cheeps first appear inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. They swim away from the player whenever they get close, which is the opposite ofDeep-Cheeps and their behavior. They only appear inWorld 1-4, and whenever there is a riff in the music, Eep Cheeps will twirl like their regular counterpart.

New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Luigi U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Eep Cheeps return inNew Super Mario Bros. U andNew Super Luigi U, and theirNintendo Switch version. They retain their behavior and appearance fromNew Super Mario Bros. Wii in all three games.New Super Luigi U additionally introduceslarger versions of them.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

While no actual Eep Cheeps make an appearance inMario Kart Tour, one of the masks used in theCheep Cheep Masks glider is designed after an Eep Cheep.

Other appearances[edit]

Smb3 gcheep ani.gifAn unused golden Cheep Cheep from Super Mario All-Stars

Though first seen inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, the concept of orange-colored Cheep Cheeps wasoriginally meant to be inSuper Mario Bros. 3 (as seen on the picture on the right), released 21 years prior, where these enemies would have come in groups of three and swam faster than green ones. While they are technically more of a tan color in the original due to sharing a palette withGoombas,Super Mario All-Stars andSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 color it orange despite it still being unused. Eep Cheeps also go unused inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, though they would function just as they do in the other games they appear in.[2]

In the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack inMinecraft, Clownfish are replaced with Eep Cheeps.

Eep Cheep artwork in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

The twelfth Fishing Tourney inAnimal Crossing: Pocket Camp that began on March 14, 2019 featured Eep Cheeps alongside regularCheep Cheeps,Cheep Chomps, andBloopers, owing to it being run onMAR10 Day. An Eep Cheep balloon attached to aBrick Block could also be obtained as special furniture after reaching the 800, 950, 1,100, or 1,300 cm milestone.

Eep Cheeps appear in theLEGOSuper Mario Character Pack (Series 1) as one of nine possible blind bag characters.
