TheDouble Jump (also known as theMidair Jump) is a move that appears inplatform games. It allows for a character tojump while being in midair, which is a state that characters are usually unable to jump from. Generally, the move is used by pressing the jump button when the player's character is not touching the ground. Despite what the name implies, a character does not need to jump off the ground in order to double-jump afterward; players are allowed to walk directly off aplatform and then double-jump. Under most circumstances, only a single Double Jump can be performed between leaving the ground and landing on the ground, but there are some exceptions to this rule.

Double Jumps are uncommon in theSuper Mario franchise. However, certain techniques, such as theFlutter Jump andspin, are comparable to the Double Jump, since they allow a character to rise higher into the air while already airborne.

History[edit]

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

The Midair Jump, or Double Jump,[1], also formatted as midair jump or double jump, is a common technique in theSuper Smash Bros. series. Every character can use it. It is performed by pressing a jump button or tilting theControl Stick upward when a character is in midair, which are the same controls for jumping normally. Most characters can only use a Midair Jump once after leaving the ground, and only regain the ability to use it by landing or grabbing a ledge. Midair Jumps are a fundamental part of movement, enabling characters to reach higher platforms, chase after characters who were just launched into the air, or as a means of returning to the stage after being knocked off. This last use case often creates problems for players, as being launched away from the stage after using the Midair Jump but before reaching a platform or ledge to refresh the Midair Jump heavily restricts that player's movement options as they attempt to return to the stage again.

Midair Jumps have several variables. Characters can have different maximum heights for their Midair Jump, with some having lower maximums and others having higher maximums. Animation wise, most Midair Jumps are different kinds of jumps, where the character flips or spins through the air before reverting to their falling animation. Some characters have more unique animations, like how characters with wings flap those wings for their Midair Jump. Many characters have different animations for using a Midair Jump while moving backward compared to their normal Midair Jump. While a character is actively using a shooting item, their jump and midair jump animations only use one kind of animation instead of varying as much as they do normally.

Double jumps can be modified by many kinds of items. For example, wearingBunny Hood increases the height gained from both a normal jump and a Midair Jump, and holding (untilSuper Smash Bros. Melee)/wearing (Super Smash Bros. Brawl-onward) theScrew Attack turns a character's normal jump and Midair Jump a offensive Screw Attack. When a character is carrying a heavy item, such as aCrate or aBarrel, or when a character is using aHammer orGolden Hammer, they are unable to perform a Midair Jump.

Some characters' Midair Jumps are more distinct than others. Characters such asNess andMewtwo have floaty Midair Jumps that cause them to ascend more slowly.Peach's Midair Jump has this property inSuper Smash Bros. Melee but does not in all other games. Characters such asKirby andBanjo &Kazooie have more than one Midair Jump available to them after leaving the ground. Each of their individual Midair Jumps are generally shorter than normal, but in summation generally go higher than other characters' single Midair Jump. The Screw Attack overwrites the former mechanic, and only affects the first Midair Jump of characters with the latter mechanic.

Yoshi's Midair Jump is based on the flutter jump, and it has two unique properties. It goes higher than any other Midair Jump. It has armor such that, as long as Yoshi has not taken too much damage, he can use his Midair Jump through enemy attacks without flinching or being launched. This armor is weaker against moves with high launch power. The drawback to these properties is that Yoshi's up special move,Egg Throw is one of very few that does not offer a large height or distance boost. Prior toSuper Smash Bros. Brawl it did not grant any kind of boost. This makes Yoshi more reliant on his Midair Jump for recovering than most other characters. Prior toSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, Yoshi's Midair Jump had a slow ascent like Ness's and Mewtwo's Midair Jumps. This somewhat emulated the movement path of a flutter jump. Yoshi's Midair Jump loses this property from those two games onward.

Starting inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, players can disable Tap Jump in the game's settings to prevent jumping from occurring when tilting theControl Stick upward.

Midair Jumps are one of the many properties that the gear mechanicsequipment (inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U) andspirits (inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate) modify. They can increase or decrease the height of Midair Jumps, and the latter can allow any fighter to Midair Jump an extra time before losing the ability to use Midair Jump. Note that effects that grant additional Midair Jumps do not increase or decrease the height of Midair Jumps, meaning that characters who already have access to multiple Midair Jumps do not get much of a benefit due to how their Midair Jumps have lower maximum heights, while characters who do not have access to multiple Midair Jumps normally get a massive boost by allowing them to use a full normal Midair Jump.

Super Mario series[edit]

InSuper Mario Run,Daisy can double-jump when the player taps the screen while in the air. This jump reaches a little less than half the maximum height of a normal jump.

InNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe,Toadette is able to double-jump in midair while in herPeachette form, this time when the player pressesR Button in midair or shakes the controller, similar toFlying Squirrel Mario. Doing a double jump creates a blast of clouds and pink star effects.

InSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, all playable characters can double-jump by equipping the Boosting Spin Jumpbadge, which modifies theMidair Spin to function as one.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Nintendo Switch)[edit]

In theNintendo Switch version ofDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze,Funky Kong is able to double jump. He does so by twirling his surfboard below himself. It is comparable to the effect ofDixie Kong'sHelicopter Spin, but without the startup of the latter move.
