“I call it theDark-Light Device. It's a nifty little doodad able to break illusions, such as objects that have been turned invisible.”
Professor E. Gadd,Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

TheDark-Light Device (also simply known asDark-Light orDark Light[1]) is aflashlight tool that appears inLuigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (as well asLuigi's Mansion 2 HD) andLuigi's Mansion 3.

History[edit]

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon /Luigi's Mansion 2 HD[edit]

InLuigi's Mansion: Dark Moon andLuigi's Mansion 2 HD, the Dark-Light Device is an add-on to thePoltergust 5000, and it can be used by pressingY Button in the original 3DS game andY Button orL Button in the Switch remaster. WhenLuigi uses the Dark-Light Device, his flashlight instead emits a rainbow-colored light, which allows him to see objects that are hidden in a manner similar to anultraviolet lamp. After shining the Dark-Light Device on these objects, Luigi needs to vacuum theSpirit Balls that are revealed so that the objects can become visible again. However, the Dark-Light Device has an energy gauge represented by a rainbow-colored meter in the top right corner, and if the Dark-Light Device is used for too long, it overheats. A few upgrades to the gauge can be acquired fromProfessor E. Gadd by collecting treasure and leveling up. The Dark-Light Device can also revealPolterpup tracks so Luigi can follow them,Boo trails to follow a Boo, andToads, coins, orgems trapped in paintings. The Dark-Light Device is also usable onghosts such asGreenies andSneakers. Sneakers are revealed when hit by the light, while Greenies start to taunt Luigi. The Dark-Light Device is also required to freeMario fromhis painting. In theScareScraper, Spirit Balls do not come out of revealed furniture, and if one Luigi has been cursed, other Luigis can use their Dark-Light Devices on him to remove the curse.

Luigi's Mansion 3[edit]

InLuigi's Mansion 3, the Dark-Light Device is an add-on to thePoltergust G-00. It is found inside a safe in theMezzanine'sStorage Room. The Dark-Light Device is used by pressingX Button and functions as before, but it can now be held indefinitely without overheating. In addition to revealing hidden objects and freeing objects and characters trapped in paintings, the Dark-Light Device can also be used to reveal the purple Spirit Balls insidepossessed bins andTakarabako Obake, as well asPolterkitty's tracks, similarly to Polterpup inLuigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.
