TheCursed Mushroom is an item that appears in certain games of theMario Party series. It is a purple-capped, teal-spottedMushroom with "angry eyes" that reduces a character's maximum roll on theDice Block for one turn. It closely resembles thePoison Mushroom, particularly the Poison Mushroom's appearance as the Poisonous Mushroom that can appear on aMushroom Space inMario Party, but it has a different effect, is described as cursing the recipient of its effect rather than poisoning them,[1] and it has a different name in both Japanese and English, except for the English localization ofMario Party 3.

The Cursed Mushroom's effect is similar to that ofShy Guy's Curse House, a shop that appears inMystery Land inMario Party 2. TheCreepy Dice Block is a similar item that appears in later games of theMario Party series. TheMini Mushroom,Slowgo Candy,Halfway Dice Block, and1-2-3 Dice Block also resemble the Cursed Mushroom in effect, though to a lesser extent.

History[edit]

Mario Party 3[edit]

A sprite of an item from Mario Party 3

The Cursed Mushroom first appears inMario Party 3, though it is known as thePoison Mushroom in the English localization. In this game, it is an item that can be obtained on anItem Space or bought for 5coins atBaby Bowser's Joint. When used, the player can select any one player (including themself or an opponent); that player's maximum roll is reduced to 3 the next time they roll the Dice Block, in place of the usual 10. An identical effect is granted to all players by the Bowser's Curse event that can occur onBowser Spaces.

The effects of the Poison Mushroom can be negated if the cursed player uses a regular Mushroom, aGolden Mushroom, aWarp Block, or aMagic Lamp. However, the player can simultaneously be affected by a Poison Mushroom and aReverse Mushroom.

The Poison Mushroom isWaluigi's favorite item in this game.

Mario Party 5[edit]

Mario Party 5 Cursed Mushroom icon

The Cursed Mushroom reappears inMario Party 5, receiving its current English name. It reappears in the main board game mode as a usablecapsule, theCursed Mushroom Capsule. Like other capsules, it is mainly received fromcapsule machines. A player can use it on themself for 5 coins, or throw it onto a space for free. When used or activated, the Cursed Mushroom Capsule grants the player a Cursed Mushroom, which reduces their maximum roll to 5 the next time they roll the Dice Block. Its effects can be negated by using a different movement-altering capsule, such as theMushroom Capsule orBullet Bill Capsule.

The Cursed Mushroom also appears as an Item Card in theCard Party game mode. In this mode, its effect is more similar to the effect it had inMario Party 3. When used, a roulette wheel appears containing spaces for each of the player's opponents; whichever opponent is selected by roulette has their next maximum dice roll reduced to 3, in place of the usual 6. A Cursed Mushroom can also be given to the player byKoopa Kid at a Bowser Card, reducing that player's next roll.

Finally, the Cursed Mushroom appears as a randomly-spawning item inSuper Duel Mode. When collected, it reduces the speed and control of the player's machine for a short time, the reverse effect of the standard Mushroom.

Mario Party 6[edit]

The Cursed Mushroom Capsule reappears inMario Party 6, now known as theCursed Mushroom Orb. It only appears in the game's Solo Mode as one of two Orbs in that mode, alongside theSluggish 'Shroom Orb. It is obtainable fromOrb Spaces. The player can use the capsule to reduce their maximum roll on the Dice Block to 3 for that turn.

The Cursed Mushroom is also depicted on theCursed Mushroom Panel in theSpeak Up mode. When revealed during Bowser Time, it will cause the question's points to steadily decrease as time passes.

Mario Party 7[edit]

Mario Party 7 Cursed Mushroom icon

The Cursed Mushroom reappears inMario Party 7. It is no longer a usable item, instead being occasionally granted by Koopa Kid when the player lands on aKoopa Kid Space. The cursed player has their maximum roll reduced to 5 (3 in 8-Player mode) the next time they roll the Dice Block. Rather than being negated by regular Mushrooms and similar items, the player cannot use Orbs that affect their movement at all while the Cursed Mushroom is active in this game.
