The Crazy Cap shop in Tostarena

Each shop is divided into two sections: the yellow section has an employee with a matching yellow hat who sells items that the player can buy with globalgold coins, while the purple section has a similar employee with a purple hat who requires the player to spend purpleregional coins to buy items. Their wares include various outfits and hats. The yellow side also sellsLife-Up Hearts, and the purple side also sells souvenir stickers and models. The yellow side also has awardrobe closet for changing clothing. Crazy Cap stores play their theme music on a loop, which can be heard in the overworld when approaching the store.

Each shop sells aPower Moon for 100 gold coins, similar to howMario earns aPower Star inSuper Mario 64 and aShine Sprite inSuper Mario Sunshine for collecting 100 coins. This can initially only be done once per kingdom; after completing the game, the player can continue to purchase individual Power Moons from any shop for another 100 coins, or a set of ten for 1,000 coins.

The Crazy Cap brand originates in New Donk City of theMetro Kingdom; with the popularity of street performers, the old theater was no longer in much demand, and so was converted to the original Crazy Cap store. Since then, the stores have spread all over the world, and appear in most of the kingdoms.

The employees of each Crazy Cap store are usually residents of the kingdoms where their branches are located. In the case of theCascade Kingdom,Lost Kingdom,Bowser's Kingdom, andMoon Kingdom, there are no friendly residents, so the employees vary. The only kingdoms that do not have Crazy Cap stores are theCloud Kingdom,Ruined Kingdom,Dark Side, andDarker Side.

The shop in theSand Kingdom has the "Employees Only"Power Moon behind the counter. Mario can enter this store from a hidden alcove, which leads behind the counter so that Mario can obtain the Power Moon. If Mario talks to theTostarenans who run the shop from this angle, they will get spooked and tell Mario to use the main entrance to purchase their products.

The original Crazy Cap in the Metro Kingdom is larger than all the others, consisting of yellow room and a purple room with an entrance for each. There is a passage between the rooms. The Lost Kingdom, Moon Kingdom, andMushroom Kingdom have Crazy Cap stores that operate out of aStarshroom. The stores of theCap Kingdom,Cascade Kingdom, and theWooded Kingdom do not have buildings, and just operate in a dedicated outdoor space. Aboombox is used to play the shop music in those locations. The shop in theSeaside Kingdom is divided into two shops; both are on the backs of yellow and purpleDorries that move around the kingdom, wearing oversized versions of the employee hats. None of the outdoor stores have closets available.

In the version 1.2.0 update for the game that includesBalloon World, special outfits were made available in the Crazy Cap stores and can be purchased after the player has finished the game; later updates added more outfits. All of them cost regular coins and can be purchased from any Crazy Cap store. The items making up these outfits have a burst icon in the upper left corner of their the item's icon. In a shop, the icon is large and reads "SPECIAL".

The brochures that Mario andCappy read from as they travel between kingdoms and that are used as the game's map screen have Crazy Cap's logo in the bottom right corner.

Many of the articles of clothing sold at Crazy Cap were later added inMario Kart Tour as variants of the original characters and inMario Kart Live: Home Circuit as outfits for Mario andLuigi.
