Cosmic blocks,[1] also referred to asmoving blocks[1] orconstructing-deconstructing platforms,[2] areblocks inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2. Theseplatforms appear in red or brown octagons, purple cubes, and green and blue rectangular varieties, the latter being the most common. Cosmic blocks normally float around but move into place aroundMario orLuigi when their assigned positions are approached, creating a path for him above abottomless pit; however, if Mario approaches their target spot too quickly, such as with hisGround Pound skill, the cosmic blocks will have too little time to position themselves.[3]
History[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, Cosmic blocks are first encountered in theSpace Junk Galaxy, where many appear at the end of thefirst mission, branching out into five pathways, each with aSilver Star at the end. When a cosmic block moves to form part of a pathway, it makes a sound effect similar to that of ashrinking platform. Cosmic blocks also appear in theSpeedy Comet and thePurple Comet missions, both taking place in the same cosmic block area. The format for the Space Junk path is different in the Purple Cometmission, to accommodate the 100Purple Coins.
Pieces of cosmic blocks appear near the ice sphere and in the fifth area ofBowser's Galaxy Reactor, being the only means to traverse these areas. These platforms are fragile and shatter several seconds after the path is formed. Towards the end of the planet are cube-shaped cosmic blocks made of ice that Mario canskate on. The fifth area is composed almost entirely of floating cosmic blocks in the shape of rectangular prisms. Mario must walk along these platforms in 2D while avoidingFire Bars and encounteringgravity fields.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Cosmic blocks are encountered in theCloudy Court Galaxy during theCosmic Clone mission and in theRolling Masterpiece Galaxy on thePalette Planet. In the Cloudy Court Galaxy, cosmic blocks form paths for Mario in lieu of theCloud Flower, though some act as walls, requiring Mario towall-jump up a specific area instead. In the Rolling Masterpiece Galaxy, Mario is required to ride theStar Ball across a short pathway of cosmic blocks. Only the green and blue rectangular variety of cosmic blocks appears in both galaxies.
