Cooligans are blue,penguin-like creatures sporting a pair of sunglasses that first appear inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. They primarily appear in icy environments and move by sliding on their bellies.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
These enemies first appear inWorld 3-1, and later appear inWorld 9-5. They are seen sliding and can damageMario and the others if they run into one of them, although if Mario or anyone else is in thePenguin Suit and they are sliding too, then they bounce off unhurt. It takes two jumps to defeat one; one jump knocks off a Cooligan's sunglasses first, slowing it down. They also fall down holes rather than hover over them. In this state, if rammed by another Cooligan, it gets defeated.
Cooligans can be defeated instantly by aFire Flower,Star,Ice Flower,Penguin Suit, orGround Pound. Cooligans continue to slide even if they are frozen, and as such can be used as platforms.
The Cooligan's attack pattern is notably similar to another penguin-based enemy, theLemguin.
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Luigi U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
Cooligans return inNew Super Mario Bros. U andNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, first found inFrosted Glacier, specifically inCooligan Fields. They behave in a similar manner as inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. They also appear as the Frosted GlacierEnemy Course. In this game, they can slide on the surface of water, similar toPenguin Mario. Cooligans can be eaten byBaby Yoshis in this game, and also trapped inbubbles blown by aBubble Baby Yoshi.
Cooligans return inNew Super Luigi U in their own level,Cooligan Shrooms, which itself replaces Cooligan Fields.
Mario Party series[edit]
Mario Party 9[edit]
Although Cooligans themselves do not appear inMario Party 9, snowmobiles that resemble their likeness make an appearance in the minigameMob Sleds. They are piloted by the three players as they attempt to eliminate the solo player.
Super Mario Party Jamboree[edit]
InSuper Mario Party Jamboree, Cooligans appear inSled to the Edge where they pull the players' sleds along the ice until they let go, after which they slide off-screen.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
Cooligans make theirPaper Mario series debut inPaper Mario: Sticker Star, where they appear in theSnow Rise andIce Flow levels ofWorld 4. In the former level, they are seen sliding down a snow-covered slope. In the latter level, Cooligans are seen waddling down the ice path before sliding; this is the first instance in which Cooligans are shown walking, and they appear to have a stocky, muscular frame from the front. Mario cannot face Cooligans in battle, but he will lose 2 HP if he crashes into them.
Mario can jump on a sliding Cooligan to make it disappear instantly. In the Snow Rise level, once Mario uses theRadiator sticker, three Cooligans can be seen stuck, showing that they cannot slide without ice, and hop if Mario uses his hammer near them. In the Ice Flow level, sometimes aCurling Stone,Rubber Ducky, orCat-o-LuckThing slide down the ice trail along with the Cooligans.
Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit]
Cooligans appear inMario Golf: Super Rush as obstacles inBlustery Basin. In Speed Golf, they can be defeated by dashing into or jumping on them since contact will slow players down.
Unused appearances[edit]
A Cooligan was originally going to appear inDr. Mario World as an assistant, but it was removed from the game.[1]

Etymology[edit]
"Cooligan" is a play on "cool," in reference to the snow-themed environments they lived in an persona, "hooligan," and the pronunciation of "penguin."
