Confused is a status ailment found in the gamePaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, indicated with an orange spiral found above the victim. A confused character, whether it be Mario, his partner, or an enemy, has an approximately 50% chance each turn to do something random and unexpected instead of what the player or the enemy's AI told it to do. One can tell a character is about to do something unusual if there is an extra-long pause before it acts. Possible results include:
- Mario or his partner may attack each other with a basic attack which is notAction Commanded (such as a jump, hammer, or no-FP move), which the player cannotGuard orSuperguard.
- Mario or his partner may use the Defend, Appeal, or Run Away actions.
- Mario or his partner may switch to a random partner. This move ignores theQuick Change badge if Mario has it equipped, so in effect, it always ends their turn.
- Enemies may attack each other, or use healing moves or items on Mario and/or his partner. If an enemy is alone and attempts to attack an ally in confusion (or there are no allies who are valid targets), it simply does nothing.
To determine what Mario or his partner does in confusion, the game simulates the player picking menu entries with equal probability, meaning the rates of each option are based on which options are available at that time. Enemies instead do what they would normally do, but aimed at the wrong team.[1]
Vivian'sInfatuate attack, and theRuin Powder item can confuse enemies, but several bosses and minibosses are highly resistant or immune to it. TheAtomic Boo, theShadow Queen,Wizzerds, andBonetail can inflict this status ailment. Random stage effects such as falling bugs can also confuse combatants. TheHead Rattle badge can confuse grounded foes for 3 turns if theAction Command is successful; additional Head Rattles prolong the confusion by 2 more turns for each one equipped at the cost of moreFP.
While confusion can be debilitating to either side of a battle, players should be cautious about which enemies they are confusing, as enemies such asLava Bubbles have fire-elemental attacks that will heal each other if they attack each other.
