Coin Boxes, formerly known as? Boxes,[1][2] are objects that resemble? Blocks and were introduced inSuper Mario 3D Land. The main difference between a Coin Box and a ? Block is that the bottom of a Coin Box is open, allowing a character to wear a Coin Box over their head. While wearing a Coin Box, players receivecoins for moving around.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
InSuper Mario 3D Land, ? Boxes are only found inWorld 8-1,World 8-4 andSpecial 1-3. LikePropeller Boxes, ? Boxes are worn byMario orLuigi on their head, and do not let them throwfireballs orboomerangs, or turn intoa statue. The primary way to lose a ? Box is by taking damage, which additionally replaces Mario changing to a weaker form upon taking damage. If Mario touches theGoal Pole with the ? Box, it disappears and gives anextra life. While wearing a ? Box, Mario will gaincoins while he moves.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
InNew Super Mario Bros. 2, similar objects known asGold Blocks appear, which are usually revealed by hittingCoin Blocks enough times, and give Mario coins at a much faster rate than the ? Boxes. Unlike ? Boxes, however, a Gold Block will disappear once 100 coins have been collected from it.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
? Boxes (now also referred to under their current name)[3] return inSuper Mario 3D World and itsNintendo Switch portSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, now with a shinier gloss than a regular ? Block. This time, they work just like Gold Blocks fromNew Super Mario Bros. 2, though they retain the ability restrictions (including the inability toturn into a statue) and the 1-Up prize by touching the Goal Pole fromSuper Mario 3D Land.
InBowser's Fury, only certain ? Blocks that come withfalling spikes are able to transform into Coin Boxes. Coin Boxes automatically fall off Mario if he enters all but the shallowest bodies ofwater or if he starts ridingPlessie. If Mario is already wearing a box, he is unable to put on another box, including a Coin Box.
Mario Kart series[edit]

When Coin Box+ is active, it will additionally sprayRed Coins out as well. When the racer collects a Red Coin, it is treated like two coins. Coin Boxes received a minor redesign in that their edges and corners are more flat rather than rounded, and the holes in their sides' corners are absent. It is also the special skill of the most drivers, with a total of 22 drivers or 23 drivers if Gold Mario is counted.
Mario Kart World[edit]
- Main section:? Block § Mario Kart World
While Coin Boxes do not appear inMario Kart World, a similar item, the? Block, appears instead. Unlike the Coin Box, the ? Block must be hit to produce coins by pressing, which will give a single coin directly to the user and drop more behind them with each hit.
