Chomp Sharks, originally namedShark Chomps,[1][2] are largeChain Chomps that appear in theYoshi's Island series. They chase after Yoshi while devouring everything in their path.
History[edit]
Yoshi's Island series[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[edit]
Shark Chomps (also namedBow Wow[3] orGiant Chomp-Chomp)[4] are introduced as one of the three varieties of "Chomps" inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, where they appear inMarching Milde's Fort andKEEP MOVING!!!! In the former level, the Shark Chomp appears right after a group ofIncoming Chomps. These giant Chomps relentlessly chase afterYoshi, and destroy anysoft rocks they touch as they do, flying through the air as they chase him. They are invulnerable to all of Yoshi's attacks. Backtracking is not possible in the sections in which they appear, as the entire ground in the sections they appear in is composed of soft rocks that are destroyed by the Shark Chomp. Shark Chomp chase sections always end with a solid platform on which the Shark Chomp breaks its teeth, causing it to tear up in pain and fall off the screen.
Yoshi's Island DS[edit]
InYoshi's Island DS, one Shark Chomp appears inRompin', Stompin' Chomps. It behaves the same way as inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and uses the same sprite, though due to the lighter colors, it seems to have been based off theYoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 sprite instead.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
InYoshi's New Island, Chomp Sharks only appear inChomp Shark Chase andChomp Rock Challenge. Their teeth no longer crack, though they still tear up in pain.
Mario Party 3[edit]
In theMario Party 3 minigameGame Guy's Sweet Surprise, a Shark Chomp known as theBig Chomp appears alongside a smaller Chain Chomp known as theLittle Chomp. The two Chomps race to eat a cake, and the player must guess which one will win. If the player correctly predicts that the Big Chomp will win, their coins are doubled. The Little Chomp's coin multiplier varies; the higher it is, the higher the Big Chomp's chance is of winning.
Despite being called Chomp Shark, it behaves more like Big Chain Chomps.
Super Princess Peach[edit]
Shark Chomps calledBig Chain Chomps are enemies inSuper Princess Peach. They are usually found bouncing down hills provided with gaps in which the princess and herumbrella may hide. Some of them are also seen periodically falling downpits. They can defeat other enemies, such asNipper Plants, on contact. One is also seen in the background of theWavy Beach world select screen, bouncing on the water surface, resembling Incoming Chomps' background sprites.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl,Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Chomp Shark appears on either side of theYoshi's Island stage as background elements, where they change their behavior depending on the season of the stage, though they do not affect gameplay. In the summer and spring, their mouths are open, while in the winter and fall, they are closed.
WarioWare: Move It![edit]
InWarioWare: Move It!, a Chomp Shark appears in the minigameSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island where it acts in the same way as in the original game, only moving more slowly.
