Charvaarghs are a type of fish-likeMagmaargh that attack by jumping out oflava. Compared to Magmaarghs, they are lengthier and have appendages resembling wings or fins. On occasion, the Charvaargh enemy has also been referred to as theLord of Lava.[1][2][3]
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
Charvaarghs make their first appearance inSuper Mario 3D World and reappear in the game'sNintendo Switch portSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. They appear in only one level, World Castle-7,Simmering Lava Lake where players must make it past them. If a character touches them while notinvincible, alife is lost, regardless of the character's form. Charvaarghs cannot be defeated by any method. They are also one of the only two enemies (including bosses) that can defeat the player in one hit, the other beingFuzzy Hordes. These are the only games where the player loses a life upon touching Charvaarghs.
However, most Charvaarghs only show up when the player enters aClear Pipe for aesthetic purposes.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Charvaarghs reappear as placable course elements inSuper Mario Maker 2. They are exclusive to theSuper Mario 3D World game style. Up to three Charvaarghs can be placed in a single course section. When placed, they will follow the player throughout the level and occasionally leap out in one of two ways. Either it will leap from the background, go high above the player's head, and then back down into the foreground, or it will leap from the bottom of the screen on the playable ground, and fly in an arc back down. If the Player's course is a Castle, Charvaarghs will start their ascents from the lava's surface, even when the lava level changes, a trait also shared byLava Bubbles. Unlike in their debut appearance, Charvaarghs can be defeated with aSuper Star, and like inCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker, touching one will simply hurt players instead of defeating them instantly.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]
Charvaarghs return inCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DSports. They appear in lava stages either coming out of grates whichCaptain Toad must walk across, or blocking his path where he must run acrossDash Panels. They debut inRolling Inferno and are seen again inMagma Road Marathon. In this game, they simply damage Captain Toad instead of instantly defeating him.
Mario Party 10[edit]
Charvaarghs made theirMario Party debut inMario Party 10. They appear inChaos Castle in theUnlucky Spaces to take awayMini Stars in Mario Party Mode or Hearts inBowser Party Mode.
Mario Kart World[edit]
Charvaarghs made theirMario Kart debut inMario Kart World. They can be found inBig Donut nearBowser's Castle. Additionally, aSandmaargh-likevariant appears in the route betweenDesert Hills andShy Guy Bazaar.

Naming[edit]
The English "Charvaargh" is a portmanteau between "char" and "Magmaargh", a naming convention shared withSandmaargh. "Char" has duel meanings: it refers to the verb "to char", meaning "to burn", as well as the noun "char", a type of cold-watersalmonoid. The latter interpretation is comparable to the Japanese name「ウーガンフィッシュ」(Ūgan Fisshu, "Magmaargh Fish").
