Chain Chomps (occasionally called simplyChomps, alternatively formatted asChain-Chomps, and alternatively calledChain Chompers[1][2] early on) are common enemies in theSuper Mario franchise. Chain Chomps were initially conceived forThe Legend of Zelda series, but a developer came across old concept art and decided to implement them inSuper Mario Bros. 3.[3]
Chain Chomps bear a resemblance to a ball and chain and are typified by their large, tooth-filled maws and incessant biting.Shigeru Miyamoto's inspiration for the Chain Chomps was from a childhood experience: a dog once ran up to him and tried to bite him, but the dog's chain held it back.[4] Chain Chomps have canine qualities as a result, such as their recurring role of being like guard dogs as well as their barking sound. Chain Chomps are often part ofBowser's Minions, but there are some exceptions to this. Despite their English name, not all Chain Chomps have chains, or even chomp, and several later depictions of chainless Chain Chomps roll in the manner ofboulders.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 3 / Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Chain Chomps first appear inSuper Mario Bros. 3 along with a relative of theirs,Fire Chomps. Chain Chomps are first found inWorld 2-5. They are attached toWood Blocks, which they slide along the ground back-and-forth around, stopping for a few moments or turning at irregular intervals while constantly chomping their jaws. When they get close enough toMario orLuigi or vice-versa, they try to lunge in their direction, though with varying height. One at the end ofWorld 5-1 lacks a Wood Block due to being in the black goal area, though it acts the same regardless. Either aStarman, aKoopa Shell, ahammer fromHammer Mario, ora statue fromTanooki Mario can defeat it. A Chain Chomp can break free after 160 seconds,[5] though it sometimes takes longer. When abound to break free, their chains begin flashing. Once they break free, they hop forward along the ground. In the remakes, the Chain Chomps inWorld 5-1 have blue mouths instead of red.
Super Mario 64 /Super Mario 64 DS[edit]
A giant Chain Chomp (also known as theBig Chomp,[6] anearly name,[7] or "Bomb"[8]) is located onBob-omb Battlefield inSuper Mario 64 andSuper Mario 64 DS. It is attached to apeg near a cell with thePower Star of "Behind Chain Chomp's Gate." The Chain Chomp lunges at Mario if he is nearby, taking away three wedges of hishealth on contact. ABob-omb, abox, or aYoshi's egg in the remake can stun Chain Chomp briefly. The Chain Chomp can be freed byground-pounding its post three times, required for it to lunge into the cell nearby and clear "Behind Chain Chomp's Gate."
Its name is hyphenated forSuper Mario 64 DS. It functions differently in "5 Silver Stars!," freely moving around with aSilver Star attached to its chain. There is also a Chain-Chomp atCastle Grounds, sometimes with the Star attached to its chain. The game standardized the design of the Chain-Chomp, especially its eye position.
Chain Chomps were first given their iconic dog bark inSuper Mario 64. This has since been used throughout theSuper Mario franchise. TheWiiVirtual Console miscolors their mouth a dull purplish color instead of bright pink.[citation needed] Their barks sound like "wan wan" in the Japanese version, matching their unlocalized name.
Super Mario Sunshine[edit]
One Chain Chomp (also called aChomp[9]) is an enemy inSuper Mario Sunshine, which also adds the smaller puppy variety,Chain Chomplets. The Chain Chomp is the first to have linking chains, instead of orbs like before, and it has a distinct, X-shaped scar on its head. Both the Chain Chomp and the Chain Chomplets are hot by default, appearing orange and burning Mario on contact, though he can useFLUDD to cool them briefly. The Chain Chomp is featured in the fourthmission ofPianta Village, where Mario first cools it before trying to pull the Chain Chomp into a tub of water. The Chain Chomp always reheats eventually, but can be cooled off again with water, also contained in some nearbyBarrels with water. Upon entering the tub, the Chain Chomp turns golden, then theShine Sprite appears above it. The Chain Chomp is noticeably evasive of Mario, always trying to move away from him.
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Only three Chain Chomps appear inNew Super Mario Bros., all inWorld 6-6. They behave like they do inSuper Mario Bros. 3, though they are slightly larger, slower, and hop along the ground rather than slide. Their post can now be ground-pounded to release them and drop three coins, even if the Chain Chomp had been defeated from either a Koopa Shells,Starmen, orMega Mushroom.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
Chainless Chomps appear inSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, where they roll around in the manner of aRuby Rock, damaging the player character if hit. They are sometimes spawned from aChomp box endlessly on certain paths. If Mario or Luigi steps in front of a Chomp, he is knocked away and loses HP. Either aRainbow Star, arubbery bulb, or aBob-omb can defeat a Chomp, causing it to explode into severalStar Bits; in Co-op mode, the second player can stop a Chomp from moving, so in the event that another one crashes into it, both are defeated. TheChomp Saucer planet of theGood Egg Galaxy features slightly smaller Chomps, but they are not officially distinguished. There is a much smaller variety named theMini Chomp, which appear from doghouses in theDreadnought Galaxy, as well as aGold Chomp in theGusty Garden Galaxy.
Chomps appear in the following list of galaxies and missions:
- Good Egg Galaxy ("King Kaliente's Battle Fleet", "Dino Piranha Speed Run")
- Battlerock Galaxy ("Breaking into the Battlerock", "Battlerock's Garbage Dump")
- Ghostly Galaxy ("Luigi and the Haunted Mansion", "Beware of Bouldergeist")
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
A large Chain Chomp is first seen inWorld 5-Castle ofNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, pullingIggy around in a seat. The Chain Chomp becomes red each time Iggy is hit and moves around faster briefly. Regular-sized Chain Chomps appear in only one level—World 7-2—behaving like inNew Super Mario Bros., though releasing it from its post can harm other players and result inBrick Blocks being destroyed.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Chomps return inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport, behaving like inSuper Mario Galaxy, and a level themed entirely around Chomps,Chompworks Galaxy, is also present here. There is one part of theFlipsville Galaxy where Chomps are destroyed automatically from crashing together. The game adds another variety, theHoming Chomp, and both Gold Chomps and Small Chomps return.
Chomps appear in the following list of galaxies and missions. If no mission is stated, Chomps appear during all missions:
- Flip-Swap Galaxy
- Rightside Down Galaxy ("Breaking the Laws of Gravity")
- Boulder Bowl Galaxy ("Rock and Rollodillo", "C'mere, Goomba")
- Flipsville Galaxy ("Flip-Flopping in Flipsville")
- Chompworks Galaxy ("Where the Chomps Are Made of Gold", "Spring into the Chompworks")
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
Chain Chomps received some changes inSuper Mario 3D Land, including unlinked rings, smaller, dark blue heads, and a short, wooden stake. First appearing inWorld 3-3, they also appear inWorld 4-1,World 7-2,Special 5-2, andSpecial 6-3, with their final appearance beingSpecial 8-
Crown. They charge at the player character like before,[10] and can still have their stake ground-pounded to release them. Mario can jump on a Chain Chomp without taking damage, and afireball can stun one briefly.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Chain Chomps are enemies inNew Super Mario Bros. 2, now depicted with unlinked chains. They are found in two courses,World 2-5 andWorld
Mushroom-B. InCoin Rush only, they also appear in theThird Course of theMystery Adventures Pack and theFirst Course of theImpossible Pack. A large Chain Chomp pulls Iggy's seat around during the battle, like the previous game. OnlyInvincible Mario orGold Mario can defeat a Chain Chomp.
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Luigi U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
Chain Chomps appear inNew Super Mario Bros. U,New Super Luigi U, andNew Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. They are found in only one course ofNew Super Mario Bros. U,Waddlewing's Nest, and only one course ofNew Super Luigi U,Wiggler Rodeo. They are similar aside from being depicted with linked chains, as well as having triangular stakes needing only one ground-pound to release them. Chain Chomps now release eight coins if defeated.
Super Mario Maker /Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit]
Chain Chomps reappear inSuper Mario Maker andits enhanced port, acting like they usually would. They appear in every game style and receive uniquely designed sprites for theSuper Mario Bros. andSuper Mario World styles. Chain Chomps are attached to a stake, either suspended blocks or rails, and can shake their stakes to make themUnchained Chomps,[11] which hop along the ground as well as have a vocal cue inSuper Mario Maker 2. An Unchained Chomp can also become the result of aThwomp landing on a Chain Chomp in any game style; placing a Chain Chomp in a block, pipe, orBill Blaster; the Chain Chomp lunging fifty times in theSuper Mario Bros. 3 style;[citation needed] or by ground-pounding its stake in theNew Super Mario Bros. U style. Chain Chomps do not become unchained if placed in theKoopa Clown Car and lunges at the player as usual. Chain Chomps and Unchained Chomps in the night-time Ground theme ofSuper Mario Maker 2 have longer chains.
Big Chain Chomps are the result of dragging aSuper Mushroom onto the Chain Chomp. They can also become winged, allowing them to fly when chained and lunging, as well as let Unchained Chomps jump higher.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Chain Chomps reappear inSuper Mario Odyssey, where they are found in theCascade Kingdom. Their chains are connected by rings that seem to act as elastics, and they have more realistic damage and wear on their heads and teeth. When they seeMario, they jump in the air facing his direction surprised with a bark, then attack by pulling back on their chain using it like an elastic to fling themselves inMario's direction. They plow past Mario if they collide, but stop if they hit other Chain Chomps. Chain Chomps glow red as they wind up. They defeat enemies such asBurrbos in their path and can break astone wall when they hit one. A radius around them never has grass in it, while the area around that does have grass, suggesting the Chain Chomps trample the grass. Chain Chomps are fully immune topoison seas.
They can becaptured by Mario andCappy. When Mario controls a Chain Chomp, he can run away from where the chain is attached to build up tension. Then the player can release to launch the Chain Chomp in the opposite direction. The player can adjust their aim with left and right input or let the stick move back slowly to regain normal control. Alternatively, the player can shake their controller to do quick short dashes forward. With this method, the Chain Chomp will be launched only when the player stops shaking the controller. The player can use both methods, but if they shake and hold the
, motion controls take priority. As an alternative to either releasing
or stopping motion input, they can also press
to escape the Chain Chomp. The motion control method does not allow Mario to change the angle, return to normal, or jump while the chain is fully wound up.
Mario hops out automatically when the Chain Chomp is sent flying, and it destroys stone walls and defeats enemies like the enemy does. However, Mario's version has more range. This enables Mario to access secret areas previously blocked by the walls. Mario can launch a Chain Chomp into aStone marker, which causes certain effects to happen like opening paths or making coins appear. While ready to launch, arrows show the trajectory the Chain Chomp will take. The camera moves automatically to show which way the Chain Chomp will go, except in bonus areas. When a Chain Chomp is launched, it is not stunned by Mario releasing the capture. Launched Chain Chomps can collect items such as coins. If a captured Chain Chomp is launched, and collides with another Chain Chomp, the second Chomp is sent flying based on the angle the first chain chomp hit it. This continues to apply if the second Chain Chomp hits a third Chain Chomp, and so on.
Captured Chain Chomps cannot take damage, even keeping their immunity to poison seas. If Mario captures a Chain Chomp then gets hit by another, he is forced out of his Chain Chomp. Chain Chomps can jump with both or
, but their jumps are low and prevent movement. While in the air with an extended chain, even if the chain is not at maximum length, the chain will slightly pull Mario back. This can prevent the player from launching the Chain Chomp if they want, but again this cannot be done using motion controls.
There are two different kinds of Chain Chomps in the game: normal sized ones with a blueish hue andBig Chain Chomps with smaller eyes and a jet black color scheme, the latter of which can be used to break open very large rocks and even theGreat Barrier. In addition,Madame Broode, a boss in this game, owns a golden Chain Chomp who fights as her pet. She refers to it asChain Chompikins, though the in-gameCapture List refers to it simply as Broode's Chain Chomp. Her Chain Chomp can be captured in the same manner as an ordinary one (after its hat is removed), and must be slammed into Madame Broode's face to defeat her. They are both fought twice in the game, once in the Cascade and once in theMoon Kingdom.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Chain Chomps and Unchained Chomps return inSuper Mario Maker 2, retaining their behavior in its predecessor. They appear in every game style with the exception of theSuper Mario 3D World style. The player can transform them into Unchained Chomps by selecting the latter's corresponding option on the pop-up menu. Likewise, Unchained Chomps now have a vocal cue. In the Ground theme only, Chain Chomps and Unchained Chomps have longer chains during the night.
Big Chain Chomps also return and can be transformed using the Super Mushroom option on the pop-up menu. Due to wings no longer being a course element, Chain Chomps and Unchained Chomps can be given them if the player selects the wings option in the pop-up menu.
The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Chain Chomps make several appearances inThe Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. They act as guard dogs forKing Koopa, and they often attack Mario and Luigi. Chain Chomps are shown to be able to swim in "The Venice Menace" where they bite on poles to sink the buildings in Venice. Throughout the show, Chain Chomps are depicted with yellow sclerae instead of the usual white.
Nintendo Adventure Books[edit]
If Mario chooses to use a shortcut to Fort Koopa while traveling through theKoopahari Desert inDouble Trouble, he can encounter a Chain Chomp guarding the fortress. Depending on how the accompanying puzzle is solved by the reader, Mario partially evades the Chomp (it manages to bite off a chunk of his shoe), reach the fortress wall, and begin scaling it, or is bitten on the foot and be forced to flee.
In the best ending ofKoopa Capers, Luigi encounters a gold Chain Chomp guarding a stash of coins. When the fumes fromWendy O. Koopa's botchedwand combination potion reach the Chomp, it is knocked out and Luigi is able to claim the coins it was guarding.
Yoshi series[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island /Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]
Only one Chain Chomp ever appears, and it is found in a room near the start ofSluggy The Unshaven's Fort inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and itsremake,Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. It functions like in theSuper Mario series, but with the added ability of lunging at the screen. This Chain Chomp can be defeated by using aPOW Block[12]:0:17 or aWinged Cloud Maker, unlocking a room with aMessage Block that gives a code to unlockingMini Battles.[12]:0:27
Two varieties of "Chomp" were added,Shark Chomps andIncoming Chomps, both massive enemies that lack chains, a trait retained by Chain Chomps in many future games. There are alsoChomp Rocks, round stone objects modeled after Chomp that can be pushed around.
Yoshi's Story[edit]
Chainless Chomps (also calledChomp Chomps[13]) are one of the largest enemies inYoshi's Story, though their in-engine sprite size is only 42x42 pixels. They are found inJungle Hut, chomping as they move, likeShark Chomps. Three Chomps around found on different vertical levels of a hut, where there is fruit to obtain. If a Chain Chomp harms a Yoshi, it makes a growling-like sound while facing the screen. There is an icon of a smaller Chomp during aMelon Race, showing theTime Limit as it moves while eatingmelons it comes across, decreasing the number rewarded at the end.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
There is also only one Chain Chomp inYoshi's New Island. It is in a hidden area ofChomp Shark Chase,[14] and can be defeated the standard way byGround Pounding the pole it is attached to.
Yoshi's Woolly World /Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
- Main article:Frame Chomp
While Chain Chomps themselves do not appear inYoshi's Woolly World orPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, a new type of Chain Chomp, under the nameFrame Chomp, is introduced as an enemy. Throwing ayarn ball at a Frame Chomp causes it to turn into aChomp Rock. It is also possible to remove the yarn from a Chomp Rock created in this way, turning it back into a Frame Chomp.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]
Chain Chomps, originally named "Chomps," make appearances inSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars andits remake. They are first seen as guards inBooster Tower. Some of their skills in battle includeIron Maiden andCarni-Kiss. Chain Chomps are weak to thunder attacks but have no resistances, though their defense is higher than their attack power. Chain Chomps can be fled from easily because they are attached to a stake. The game adds a golden variety,Chomp Chomps, andChaindeliers, which hold the chandeliers inBowser's Keep. For the remake, Chain Chomps use their modern designs, whilst Bowser's retains its original design, even the artwork of the Chain Chomp.
Bowser can equip and use alighter-colored female Chain Chomp as a weapon, after rescuing her from Booster's Tower. She has an average attack power of ten points, with a deviation of up to four points above or below. Bowser uses her as a flail before throwing her at the enemy, with theTimed Hit being activated by pressing the button as she hits, causing her to bite repeatedly. Other similar weapons include aFake Chomp, which is the shed shell of one, and a spiky type, theSpiked Chomp. The remake also adds another weapon, theWonder Chomp.
A pair of Chain Chomps pull the Bowser's Keep float in the parade ending sequence.
Mario Kart series[edit]
This section is astub. Please considerexpanding it to include any missing information.Specifics:Mario Kart World
Chain Chomps make recurring appearances in theMario Kart series in multiple different forms, typically serving as an obstacle. They are usually much larger in these games than in theSuper Mario series.
Mario Kart 64[edit]
Chainless Chomps are obstacles inRainbow Road ofMario Kart 64. They roam up and down the track, lunging racers upward on contact. Besides the lack of a chain, they look like the Chain Chomp inSuper Mario 64, but with the shinier texture thatMetal Mario previous had.[15]
Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]
Chain Chomps are obstacles on bothMario Circuit andLuigi Circuit inMario Kart: Double Dash!!. They are on the side of the road, fixed to its post and trying to ram players. A Chain Chomp also functions asBaby Mario andBaby Luigi'sspecial item, also being usable forPetey Piranha andKing Boo, who can use any other special item. A unique theme plays as the Chain Chomp item pulls the users forward briefly, knocking over other players, before traveling the course aimlessly before falling off; this occurs earlier if its users are hit by an item. Either way, a Chain Chomp either way flips over the racer, causing them to dropitems, but running into one with aStar causes them to go offroad.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! standardized the look of Chain Chomps further thanSuper Mario Sunshine, though its artwork is reused from the cover art ofMario Golf: Toadstool Tour.
Mario Kart DS[edit]
The Chain Chomp reappears inGCN Luigi Circuit and the chainless type inPeach Gardens inMario Kart DS. Their mouths are always open, no longer animated, and the chainless type hasItem Boxes trailing behind them. Mission 3-3 features a Chain Chomp that actively attacks Luigi while he collects coins on Luigi Circuit, and Mission 5-1 features a race against one on Peach Gardens. A Chain Chomp is depicted with the brand "Dangerous" as banners on several courses.
The Chain Chomp wasgoing to be an item, but was replaced by the functionally similarBullet Bill.
Mario Kart Wii[edit]
A chained Chain Chomp appears onMario Circuit as well as the returningGCN Mario Circuit inMario Kart Wii. The stray type now has chains and no longer bounce on the ground; they appear inDS Peach Gardens, as well as on Mario Circuit during the first May 2008 tournament.[16] If a player is hit by a Chain Chomp, they are knocked back in the same manner as if they were hit by aBullet Bill. An unchained Chain Chomp is a hazard atChain Chomp Wheel, after being shot from a cannon, and it rolls around the mid section of the roulette wheel, squishing players along the way. Unchained Chain Chomps were also onRainbow Road during the second November 2009 tournament.
Mario Kart 7[edit]
Chomps are on the moon portion ofRainbow Road inMario Kart 7. They function the same as usual, except players lose coins if hit.
Mario Kart 8 /Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]
AsN64 Rainbow Road returns inMario Kart 8, so do the unchained Chain Chomps. This time, they bounce in place on the road, creating waves that are an advantage for racers to performtricks, instead of roaming on it. In the building on the courseWater Park a sign that says 'CAUTION! No Pets' has a picture of a Chain Chomp with a red line across it. Additionally, two Chain Chomps appear inGBA Cheese Land from theAnimal Crossing ×Mario Kart 8 DLC pack, acting the same as they did in previous appearances, only now they may also hang above the ground momentarily as they lunge in an attempt to hit any airborne racers while making it possible for other racers to pass directly under them. Also, Chain Chomps appear in adverts within the courses of the game forChain Chomp Racing Chains. All these Chain Chomps return inMario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Chain Chomps also appear in theBooster Course Pass forMario Kart 8 Deluxe starting with Wave 3. Several chained Chain Chomps appear onTour London Loop, but they become unchained on the final lap. Unchained Chain Chomps also appear onDS Peach Gardens. The rolling type reappears in3DS Rainbow Road.Incoming Chomps also appear in the background ofYoshi's Island. Two chained Chain Chomps appear onTour Rome Avanti.

They behave like the Chain Chomps found inMario Kart 8 andMario Kart 8 Deluxe's rendition of Cheese Land. The rolling type reappears in3DS Rainbow Road, allDS Peach Gardens variants, and Rome Avanti 3T. This game is the first timeuncaptured Chain Chomps are portrayed as having light blue-colored irises in-game. A Chain Chomp also appears on abadge, as well as in paintings inside the main dojo atNinja Hideaway. A Chain Chomp-themedMii Racing Suit debuted in theBangkok Tour.
Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit[edit]
The Chain Chomp is an item inMario Kart Live: Home Circuit that attaches to another driver's kart and pulls them in random directions on the track for a few seconds. Gate billboards with Chain Chomp signs give the item automatically when driven through.
Mario Kart World[edit]
Chain Chomps appear inMario Kart World as obstacles, both chained and unchained. Chained versions act as they do in previousMario Kart entries, while unchained versions roll around the track. Chain Chomps have a battle course named after them:Chain Chomp Desert, which is largely based onThwomp Desert fromMario Kart Wii.
Excitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle[edit]
Chain Chomps were part of the audience inExcitebike: Bun Bun Mario Battle.
Mario Party series[edit]
Chain Chomps have also made plenty of appearances in theMario Party series. Most of the time, they serve either as obstacles that players must avoid or as helpful items that steal stars or coins for players.
Mario Party 2[edit]
A sleeping Chain Chomp is featured inSneak 'n' Snore, a minigame inMario Party 2 where players each try to sneak by in abarrel to press a red button and then exit; the Chain Chomp drops any exposed players into theWarp Pipe, removing them from the minigame. A fossilized Chain Chomp is sometimes the image in the minigameCrazy Cutters, and a Chain Chomp could be the result of hitting a rotating block inToad in the Box, causing the player to become crushed twice. There is a Chain Chomp in the background ofPirate Land, guarding two Chain Chomp-shaped jail cells on a jail cell to the lower left, as well as inBowser Land, moving a wagon near the center.
Mario Party 3[edit]
There is a Chain Chomp in the minigameMerry-Go-Chomp inMario Party 3 that eliminates the closest player when the roulette stops. Two differently sized Chain Chomps,Big Chomp and Little Chomp, each eat a cake during the minigameGame Guy's Sweet Surprise, and the player wins if they guess the correct winner. In the Japanese version, the Little Chomp is referred to as an ordinary Chain Chomp. There is also a chainless Chain Chomp chewing a bone atSpiny Desert. Chainless Chain Chomps can be partners in Duel Mode after unlocking them from the lottery and have a health value of 2; an attack of 1; and a salary of six coins. The special attack of a partner Chain Chomp is to grow large, making them resemble a Shark Chomp, to squash their opponent.
Mario Party 4[edit]
Four Chain Chomps are part of theChomp Call item introduced inMario Party 4 to move the location of theStar Exchange. A Chain Chomp is also the obstacle to avoid in the minigameChain Chomp Fever, where four Chain Chomps are also in the background, pouringlava into the lake. Players possibly have to catch a chainless ones in the minigameLong Claw of the Law.
Mario Party 5[edit]
- “Ruff! Ruff! (I'm gonna stealcoins orstars just for you!)”
- —Chain Chomp,Mario Party 5
A Chain Chomp is part of a different item inMario Party 5, theChain Chomp Capsule, taking over a Boo's role by stealing either coins or a star for a fee. The Chain Chomp steals Stars from any player it passes, unless that player has aSnack Orb. Additionally, a Chain Chomp appears inInfernal Tower to launch the player to the start if they land on aHappening Space. Chain Chomps are in the minigameThrow Me a Bone, where players each guide one to the goal using bones. One sometimes appears inSeer Terror as a result. Both large Chain Chomps and several smaller Chomps sometimes run throughout the neighborhood inDunk Bros.
Mario Party Advance[edit]
A Chain Chomp appears inMario Party Advance in theShroom City mode. It lives in a small area withWarp Pipes. Chain Chomp had been taken care of byMouser at one point.[17] The player can unlock the minigameChain Saw from Chain Chomp by defeating him in it during the questChomper Stomper. The ending reveals that Chain Chomp became the guardian of theDuel Tower's first floor,[18] replacingWhomp.

- —Bowser,Mario Party 9
A Chain Chomp is fought in the minigameChain Chomp Romp inMario Party 9, where it is the stage boss ofMagma Mine. Certain paths selected by players lead to a cannon, which launch a cannonball to deal one damage or a golden one for three damage. Players who do not arrive at a cannon are hit by the Chain Chomp and lose a point. The same Chain Chomp can appear inBowser's Block Battle, where if Bowser rolls it on his metal dice block, the Chain Chomp moves around, turning around upon hitting walls and taking away points of players whom it hits.
A different Chain Chomp can be part of one of the puzzles inJigsaw Jumble.
Mario Party: Island Tour[edit]
A Chain Chomp is fought in the boss minigameChain Chomp's Lava Lunge inMario Party: Island Tour, being the second boss of theBowser's Tower mode. Landing on theUnlucky Space onPerilous Palace Path wakes up the Chain Chomp, causing it to send players backward.

They are in several minigames:Chomp Wash,Camera-Ready as part of the scene,Scare-ousel as a mechanical obstacle,Luigi Rescue Operation as a potential painting, andJr.'s Jauntlet as a potential hazard.
Mario Golf series[edit]
A Chain Chomp is the layout of the fourteenth hole ofMario's Star in theNintendo 64 version ofMario Golf, as well as a possible name listed on the scoreboard.
A Chain Chomp is first seen during the opening inMario Golf: Toadstool Tour, waking up duringYoshi's turn and scaring him. Several holes inPeach's Castle Grounds andBowser Badlands feature a Chain Chomp eating any ball in its its area, counting it out of bounds. Chain Chomps retain the same role in theMushroom Course ofMario Golf: Advance Tour andBowser's Castle ofMario Golf: World Tour.
Chain Chomps work differently on theBowser Highlands course inMario Golf: Super Rush, knocking away balls that land nearby. Chain Chomps cause players to lose coins in Battle Golf mode on contact.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
Chomps inPaper Mario are designed afterShark Chomps. TheDry Dry Ruins is decorated with statues in their likeness as well asStone Chomps. At one point,Tutankoopa calls an indefinite number to assist him, with the Chomps lunging to attack. Afterward, Tutankoopa tries to calm one called "Chompy," which proceeds to chase and try to bite him, continuing to do so during theparade, with two others assisting eventually.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
Chain Chomps (hyphenated in the original) are enemies found in thePalace of Shadow as well as thePit of 100 Trials inPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door andits remake. They have very high attack and defense, and are amongMoon Clefts andElite Wizzerds for having the highest defense rating. The camera bounces with the Chain Chomps in the overworld if Mario does theFirst Strike. There is also a statue of a smiling Chain Chomp over the entrance to theGlitz Pit. There is another variety,Red Chomps, which likewise appear in the Pit of 100 Trials and at the Glitz Pit.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
Chain Chomps are first found in a hidden area ofthe Dotwood Tree in Chapter 3 ofSuper Paper Mario.Francis owns a pet Chain Chomp in the basement ofFort Francis. They also appear in theFlipside Pit of 100 Trials. Three differently colored Chain Chomps compose the bossUnderchomp, fought atThe Underwhere in a manner similar toMother, as opposed to normal boss fights. The game adds the strongerDark Chomp variant, appearing only in theFlopside Pit of 100 Trials.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
InPaper Mario: Sticker Star,Big Chain Chomps appear inWorld 5, while the only regular Chain Chomp in the game appears in the final battle againstBowser. To defeat it, Mario needs a bat-type thing sticker or any Tail sticker to send the Chain Chomp and Bowser into a pit. This Chain Chomp has more health than Big Chain Chomps. Unlike most enemies, the Chain Chomp's appearance has not changed much from the previousPaper Mario games, though they now more closely resemble the modern Chain Chomp design rather than Chomp Sharks; notably, they have less teeth, their mouths are smaller, and they feature trapezoid-shaped segments between their bodies and chains.
In apre-release screenshot, a nameless Chain Chomp appeared as a partner in a location that resembles World 3 in the final version.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
ABig Chain Chomp made out of cardboard namedPrincess appears inPaper Mario: Color Splash right after the Bone Thing is obtained inMarmalade Valley, and also in theBone Thing card animation when used during a battle. She isProf. Kinopio's pet.
Later in the game, during the battle withIggy Koopa atthe Golden Coliseum, Iggy himself, aHammer Bro and aSnifit ride on chariots attached to Chain Chomps. The Chain Chomps are not attackable.
A Chain Chomp appears as the second-round opponent inRoshambo Temple #5.
Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]
InPaper Mario: The Origami King, a Chain Chomp named Princess appears inShogun Studios. While she does not harm Mario, she simply blocks the path to theNinja Attraction by threatening to bite him. To get past Princess, Mario must trade theBaseball with the Dry Bones duo in exchange for aBone. When Princess is given the bone, she takes a liking toOlivia as hearts appear above her head. Princess shows affection every time Mario walks by her from then on.
APaper MachoChain Chomp appears in the Spring of Jungle Mist. If Mario chooses to followBowser Jr.'s orOlivia's directions at one point, they reach a dead end and the Chomp suddenly appears from the bushes and lunges at them, causing a Game Over. This means that the right path isKamek's, so that the group can see the Chomp and avoid it, although they must escape and reach a tree root to trap it, and like before, if Mario does not keep up with the others, he receives a Game Over. While climbing the large tree, the Chomp chasing Mario and co., and a Game Over will result if the Chomp catches them. Once the group grabs onto the vine to swing away, the Chomp attempts to leap after them, only to plummet. The Chomp does not appear again during revisits to the level.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga /Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
Two enemies related to Chain Chomps appear inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga:Mecha-Chomps, dog-like mechanical Chomps atWoohoo Hooniversity, and theChomp Bro, a variation of theHammer Bro atBowser's Castle that uses small Chomps for weapons. In theremake, Mecha-Chomps are replaced byMechakoopas, though regular Chain Chomps appear as troops in theMinion Quest: The Search for Bowser mode. Chain Chomps are melee troopers, and they attack by running into enemies. TheirSpecial Skill, Charging Champ, allows them to charge through enemies in their path.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]

InMario & Luigi: Partners in Time, thePocket Chomp is aBros. Item. At first it appears to be a small Chomp in aMario Party-like orb, but when released, it more than triples in size and chases the brothers across the screen, forcing them tojump on any enemy in their way. Occasionally, a Chomp with a ribbon on its head and white eyelashes appears, which is slower than a normal one. This is likely implying it is female. The Pocket Chomps bark, but it sounds more of the bark inSuper Mario 64 andits remake than later games likeMario Party 7. TheElder Princess Shroob uses a Shroob version of a regular Chain Chomp calledKyankyan for one of her attacks during the first phase of her boss battle.
A chainless Chomp also appears while Mario, Luigi,Baby Mario, andBaby Luigi are heading through the Warp Pipe to get to the top of the Princess Shroob statue inShroob Castle. It leaps out of the basement's sewer water and bashes the pipe, redirecting its destination to the basement. Later, as the brothers are about to hit a! Block to cross a pit of spikes and leave the basement, the Chomp leaps out of the water, eats the block, and heads into one of the five Warp Pipes visible on the map. The player must use the Star blocks that appear to damage the Chomp four times with lasers. However, on the final attempt, Chomps fill up all the pipes. The player can tell the correct Chomp apart from the others by looking at which one is barking the fastest. When it is defeated, the Chomp is destroyed and the block heads back to its original position. Unlike most chainless depictions of Chomps, this one has the chain holder in the back rather than the back being smooth and round.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story /Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story,Chain Chawfuls are Chain Chomps that have been possessed by Fawful-likeSworms, forcing them to work under Fawful's wing. If Bowser can swallow the Sworm, then the Chain Chomp turns back to normal and runs away. Regular Chain Chomps appear in the fight withJunker and Junker X when Mario or Luigi defeats aJunker Can. The Chain Chomp attempts to ram the brother that defeated the can, but it can be deflected by striking it with the hammer. Chain Chomps are also present among the smaller Piranha Plants Bowser must plow through to reach the two massive Piranha Plants at Peach's Castle, and lunge at him in a straight horizontal line unlike the Piranha Plants that are implanted. One Chain Chomp is also present outside the final station in theFawful Express battle.
Chain Chomps reappear inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, where they are in theBowser Jr.'s Journey mode as enemies and recruitable allies.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]
Chain Chomps appear as enemies inMario & Luigi: Dream Team. They appear in the final area,Neo Bowser Castle. In the field, they drag their respectiveWalker Guy towards the Bros. when spotted. At the start of a battle, they always appear with a Walker Guy. If defeated, the Walker Guy attempts to bring another into battle by running into the background and looking for one (which on occasion, fails), and thus the Walker Guy should be defeated first. The Chain Chomp is the force of the pair that enables them to attack, whether it be with the Walker Guy or not.
Chain Chomps may look at a Bro, and start to swing its chain with the Walker Guy holding on for dear life, where the Walker Guy gets flung off towards the Bro who was not looked at. The Bro the Walker Guy was flung towards must hammer them to the ground before them to avoid taking damage. The Chain Chomp then charges at a Bro, who must be stopped by having the targeted Bro hammer it. If the Walker Guy is countered and the Chain Chomp attacks the same Bro, the Walker Guy ends up getting mowed over and takes damage.
A Chain Chomp may also drag its Walker Guy through the Bros., who must jump over or on either the Walker Guy or the Chain Chomp to avoid them. The Walker Guy takes more damage the longer it gets dragged about, and may attempt to pull the Chain Chomp back just before it hits a Bro, which may throw off the Bros.' timing. After either a Bro gets hit by this attack, or the attack fails to hit a Bro for long enough, it ends.
A lone Chain Chomp heads into the middle of the battlefield, and looks about frantically, eventually deciding who to attack, and lunging at them, whether it be friend or foe. Mario and Luigi must hammer the Chain Chomp away if they are targeted, this can make the brosdizzy, and if successful, the Chain Chomp may attempt to charge at something else or end the attack.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
Chain Chomps appear inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam as enemies in both their normal andpaper forms. Once again, they appear inNeo Bowser Castle. Chain Chomps do not appear on the field and are only encountered in battle with aShy Guy that holds both a regular Chain Chomp and a Paper Chain Chomp. The Chain Chomps attack by lunging at which bro they are parallel with, which must be jumped over, and then they both drag the Shy Guy at Paper Mario who must then jump. They can also attack a single bro, which beforehand they both jump a certain number of times, and the one that jumped the most attacks, which must be countered with the hammer. The regular Chain Chomp goes straight for the bro, while the Paper Chain Chomp attacks from behind. It is possible to defeat either Chain Chomp if it was targeted other than theShy Guy holding them both. If one of the Chain Chomps were defeated, the Shy Guy (which is the main target) and the other Chain Chomp run away with noEXP given. If there are any remaining enemies in the battle, the surviving Chain Chomps occasionally appear chasing aPaper Fuzzy, and the targeted bro must jump over the Chain Chomp. Any enemies aligned with the Chain Chomp's attack also take damage.
During the final battle againstShiny RoboBowser, one of his attacks involve transforming his arms and legs into wheels and chasing them in the left direction. At the end of this attack, a Chain Chomp appears which the Bros. must jump over and if no one takes damage from it, the Chain Chomp damages Bowser which ends the attack.
Mario Tennis series[edit]
Mario Power Tennis /New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis[edit]
They are part of a minigame atWario Factory Court inMario Power Tennis, rewarding a point each time they are fed (unless they are in an angered stage), though hitting them with a Bob-omb or water anger or put them to sleep, respectively. If an angered Chain Chomp is hit by water, it reverts to normal, though a Bob-omb causes them to chase the player, who can protect themselves by hitting a switch. Sleeping Chain Chomps can be awoken with a Bob-omb. A Chain Chomp also appears in the opening cutscene where it gives chase to a handicappedWario on aconveyor belt during one ofBowser's exercises to make them andWaluigi stronger. Another skit also shows both of them running from it.
Mario Tennis Aces[edit]
A Chain Chomp appears as a playable character inMario Tennis Aces, holding its racket in its mouth. Excluding capturing inSuper Mario Odyssey, this marks the first time in anySuper Mario game where a Chain Chomp is playable (other thanPuzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition). Itsemblem is a side view of a Chain Chomp with no pupils. Chain Chomp is classified as a Powerful character in the game, and itsSpecial Shot is Unleash, in which it spins around an invisible axis with its chain before hitting the ball. Chain Chomp's horizontal and verticalTrick Shots are named Side Whirl and Vertical Whirl respectively, and both involve it spinning towards the ball. Its entrance animation has it lowered onto the court in a metal cage while it is asleep; however, the placement of the cage wakes it, causing it to bounce around until it destroys the cage and jumps out. Chain Chomp has three alternate costumes, all of which give it a white cap with its emblem on the front and a colored outline; this outline is yellow in its first alternate costume, red in its second, and green in its third. These costumes were originally earned by collecting participation points in the March 2019 online tournament, with 300 points unlocking the yellow costume, 1000 points unlocking the red costume, and 2000 points unlocking the green costume. The costumes returned in the October 2019 tournament and appear in every April and October tournament since, where 250 points unlock the yellow costume, 500 points unlock the red costume, and 1000 points unlock the green costume. Chain Chomp also appeared in both of the game's online tournament demos as an unlockable playable character, unlocked after 1500 participation points were accumulated in the first and after twelve matches were completed in the second. It also appears as an enemy in the adventure mode in the mission found on the Castle Bridge,Sure Shot Challenge (Advanced), where the player must hit 30 balls past the Chain Chomp without letting it hit three.

Mario Strikers series[edit]
Super Mario Strikers[edit]
Super Mario Strikers features a Chain Chomp as an item with which the player can attack. If used, the Chomp attacks all opposing players on the field, leaving them on the ground for a few seconds. However it is very rare, and it only appears if the team is losing badly. It is the strongest offensive item in the game. It has no effect on the user's team.
Mario Strikers Charged[edit]
Chain Chomp returns in the sequel,Mario Strikers Charged acting very similarly as they did inSuper Mario Strikers. Like in the first game, it rampages around the whole field, attacking anyone who has the ball and stunning them for a certain amount of time. They appear only when the team is losing badly. They appear more often than in the previous game, but can now affect teammates. On a side note, it is possible for the Playmaker and Defensive players to avoid the Chain Chomp. Balanced players can also avoid the Chain Chomp, but it is more difficult. However, neither Power nor Offensive players can avoid the Chain Chomp.

Chain Chomps have had various roles in theMario & Sonic series. Their first appearance in the series is inMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for theNintendo DS as part of a minigame where Wario must push off a Chain Chomp with hisWario Waft inBlow Away Chain Chomp!. - SmashWiki article:Chain Chomp
Chain Chomps first appear as anAssist Trophy inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS /Wii U and return as one inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate. They attack by lunging at opponents from their posts and chomping them for multiple hits. If the Chain Chomp falls off the stage, then it leaps back up onto it. Chain Chomps are also enemies in theSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS-exclusive mode Smash Run, attacking in the same manner as the Assist Trophy; these Chain Chomps are invulnerable to any attack, unlike their Assist Trophy counterpart, and the only way to defeat them is by attacking the post until it is free.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features a Chain Chomp as an Advanced-class Attack-type primaryspirit. It allows no support slots and, when equipped, makes the user slower but more difficult to launch. The corresponding spirit battle involves ametallicPac-Man and a hostile Chain Chomp Assist Trophy on theYoshi's Island stage. In addition to the Spirit Board, the Chain Chomp spirit can be obtained from Beedle's Tent for 1,000 Spirit Points.
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]

Their main skill is Menace, which delays the turn count of all enemies by 1. Their secondary skill, Dark Boost, increases the Attack of all Dark-attributed team members when the player clears a row of dark orbs.
If they are given 3Flame Chomp Coins, they transform into the enemy "Chain Chomp & Flame Chomp", which has high attack and below average HP. Their main skill, Roar, delays the turn count of all enemies by 2. Their secondary skill is Twin Target, which raises their attack and attacks 2 enemies for clearing 4 orbs of Dark or Fire orbs.
Additionally, if they are given 6 Flame Chomp Coins, they transform again into the enemy "Chain Chomp & Flame Chomps", which is a Chain Chomp and 2Flame Chomps. In this form, they have very high attack and average HP. Their skill is Fierce Roar, which delays the turn count of all enemies by 3, and their secondary skill is Bind Barrier, which occasionally prevents paralysis.

Other appearances[edit]
The Legend of Zelda series[edit]
Chain Chomps have additionally made various recurring appearances in theThe Legend of Zelda games, and are the first overall appearance of large-sized Chain Chomps, even beforeSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. InThe Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Chain Chomps appear as enemies inTurtle Rock. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening features three domesticated Chain Chomps, one specific one under the nameBowWow, stemming from the Japanese name for Chain Chomp,Wanwan, which is also an onomatopoeia for a dog's bark. The other two areMini Bow-Wows[22] that lack chains, being the first depiction of chainless Chain Chomps. They reappear inLink's Awakening'sGame Boy Color version, and in the 2019Nintendo Switch remake, which gives the smaller two names, beingChowChow andCiaoCiao. InThe Legend of Zelda: Four Swords andThe Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition, a Chain Chomp can be used as an item to eat enemies, though it may attack other Links as well. The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures features a single Chain Chomp as an enemy. InHyrule Warriors, a Chain Chomp is Link's level threeBall and Chain weapon upgrade when using hisGauntlets moveset. The Chain Chomp in said game uses the design from games prior to the in-game redesign inMario Kart: Double Dash!! (and as such resembles its artwork for said game).
The recurring appearance of Chain Chomps throughoutThe Legend of Zelda series was allegedly started becauseTakashi Tezuka put one in a game as a joke.[23]
Bayonetta 2[edit]
InBayonetta 2, a Chain Chomp is used as a weapon byBayonetta and Jeanne. Upon completing the game on 3rd Climax (Hard Mode) or (in theNintendo Switch version) scanning anamiibo relating to Bowser and his minions, a special Golden LP is unlocked. When the player returns to Rodin's Shop, Rodin immediately mentions the LP's importance. The LP contains theBob-omb Battlefield theme fromSuper Mario 64, and when Rodin returns from Inferno, he brings the Chain Chomp, which can be equipped by both Bayonetta and Jeanne as a foot weapon, with them using the chain and the creature itself as a flail. Certain attacks also have the Chain Chomp shoot out lighter versions of itself that latch onto enemies and explode after a few seconds. As a reference to Bow Wow fromLink's Awakening, the Chain Chomp also automatically lunges at nearby enemies and chests, lightly damaging them, as well as wandering cats in certain stages.
Unused appearances[edit]
Super Mario World[edit]
In a 2017 interview, it was revealed that Chain Chomps were originally going to be inSuper Mario World, as evidenced by a prototype sprite sheet.[24] Its chain still exists unused in the final game, with the enemy graphics overwritten byFishin' Lakitu.[25]
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[edit]
Shigeru Miyamoto shared that a Chain Chomp was planned to appear inThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as an enemy inGerudo's Fortress. The Chain Chomp could captureLink, and he would have to use the hammer to break the chainlinks and free himself. The character was in the game until he was removed "in the final revisions", though the reason for doing so was not specified.[26]
General information[edit]
Physical description[edit]
Chain Chomps resemble a black or dark blue ball, sometimes with chains attached to them. Many descriptions state Chain Chomps are made out of steel, iron or simply metal.[27][28][29] Modern games depict their body scratched like metal, with chipped paint around their teeth. They have big circular eyes, large gaping mouths, and razor-sharp teeth. Chain Chomps in earlier appearances have smaller teeth that are more equal size of each other. These appearances depict them with around eight or nine teeth on each jaw. Modern appearances of Chain Chomps depict them with around four or five larger teeth on each jaw instead. Chain Chomps appear in various sizes, often bigger than Mario. A Chain Chomp's chain is commonly tied to a post, block or other objects, restricting their movement to an area. These chains can be made out of regular chain links, or out of rings or black orbs which appear not physically connected to each other.
Different types of Chain Chomps can have other colors, such as theRed Chomp and theGold Chomp.
Personality[edit]
Unlike most enemies from theSuper Mario franchise, Chomps are usually not sapient, and instead behave more like dogs: They can emit dog-like barks and act similar to guard dogs. Some Chain Chomps such asPrincess, fromPaper Mario: The Origami King, are kept as pets like dogs. Some items, such as theChomp Call andPocket Chomp, further this comparison. Chain Chomps have a tendency to sleep, as shown in some games such asMario Golf: Toadstool Tour,Mario Superstar Baseball,Mario Power Tennis, and variousMario Party minigames includingSneak 'n' Snore.
Powers and abilities[edit]
Chain Chomps are some of the stronger enemies in theSuper Mario franchise. InSuper Mario games, they are almost entirely invincible, and they usually have an above-average defense in RPGs. Their main method of attack is lunging at the enemy and biting them, though they are usually pulled back by their chains.
