Carrying items and characters is a recurring action in various games of the extendedSuper Mario franchise. It is used to deliver entities to specific locations as part of a challenge or tothrow them as a projectile weapon. Depending on the game, the holder, and what is being held, the object may be carried in front of or over the head of the holder. In many side-scrolling games, the carry button is shared with therun button, though in free-camera games, it is more often shared with the basic attack function, such aspunching orspinning. Games of theYoshi series usually exclude the ability to carry items, asYoshi's ability toswallow andspit enemies and objects fills a mostly comparable role.
History[edit]
Mario Bros. series[edit]
Punch Ball Mario Bros.[edit]
Carriable and throwable objects first appear in theSuper Mario franchise as a whole inPunch Ball Mario Bros., where the eponymousPunch Balls are grabbed and thrown to defeat enemies due to the bumpablefloor from the originalMario Bros. not being present.
Mario Clash[edit]
InMario Clash, Koopa Shells must be thrown to stun enemies to defeat them in a similar manner to the Punch Balls inPunch Ball Mario Bros. They can be thrown to the side or between the foreground and background.
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Carrying objects and enemies is introduced to the mainSuper Mario series inSuper Mario Bros. 2, where it is one of the game's primary actions due tostomping being absent. Objects are picked up from below and held over the character's head. They includevegetables, enemies, bombs,Mushroom Blocks, andkeys, among other objects. Different characters pick up and walk while carrying at different speeds, withToad being the fastest,Mario being second,Luigi being third, and thePrincess being slowest.
Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Carrying is altered inSuper Mario Bros. 3, where objects are now picked up from the side, held in front of the player character while carried, andkicked when let go rather than thrown.Koopa Shells and other shells are the most common things that can be carried, thoughBob-ombs andWhite Blocks are also possible to carry. Carrying is also the only way to giveFrog Mario normal movement on land.
InWorld-e inSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, a few entities can be carried in the same manner as inSuper Mario Bros. 2 instead.
Super Mario World[edit]
InSuper Mario World, carrying works mostly like it does inSuper Mario Bros. 3, but now objects can also be thrown straight upwards into the air instead of just in front of the player. Carryable objects include shells of various types, keys,Grab Blocks, Bob-ombs,Goombas, andBaby Yoshis. Carrying an object into theGiant Gate will give the player aSuper Mushroom if they aresmall, the same type of power-up that they have if they areSuper Mario,Fire Mario, orCape Mario and do not have the same type of power-up in theirItem Box, or a1-Up Mushroom if they already have the same type of power-up that they have in their box. AKey orTrampoline brought to the Goal Gate will always give the player a 1-Up Mushroom.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[edit]
After being absent in the firstSuper Mario Land, carrying appears inSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Only Koopa Shells can be carried, and Mario holds them diagonally upwards in front of him.
Super Mario 64[edit]
InSuper Mario 64, Mario can carry members of theBob-omb family, crates,MIPS, andBaby Penguins with the punch button, and can also pick up Koopa Shells underwater. When carrying something on land, he moves slower and jumps lower than normal. The non-enemy characters that can be picked up will be gently set down if the button is pressed again while holding still. If pressed while moving or in the air, he will instead throw it, and always throws the other enemies and objects.
InSuper Mario 64 DS, anything thrown byWario will travel much further than when thrown by anyone else. Yoshi instead holds objects in his mouth, and can turn some intoeggs.
Super Mario Sunshine[edit]
Carrying objects inSuper Mario Sunshine works similar to inSuper Mario 64, though he always sets down objects when released while not moving rather than throwing them. He can pick upfruits, Bob-ombs, andbarrels. His jumping and other movements are unimpeded while he carries them.
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Carrying inNew Super Mario Bros. works the same as inSuper Mario Bros. 3. Mario and Luigi can carry shells and Bob-ombs.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy, Mario can again carry shells and Bob-ombs, and is only slightly impeded in movement while he does so. He can pick up the objects simply by walking into them, though spinning can bring them in closer, especially while underwater.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
InNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, carrying shells and Bob-ombs functions the same as inSuper Mario Bros. 3. Heavier objects, such asIce Blocks, other player characters, andToad, can only be picked up by shaking the Wii remote next to them, and are held overhead.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Carrying inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 functions the same as inSuper Mario Galaxy.Spin Drills are a powerup that is carried overhead like a throwable object, though they are instead used to dig rather than thrown.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Carrying inNew Super Mario Bros. 2 once again functions as it does inSuper Mario Bros. 3.
New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]
Carrying inNew Super Mario Bros. U functions as it does inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. Baby Yoshis reappear and can be carried in the same manner as shells, but now have abilities that can be activated while they are carried.
Super Mario 3D World[edit]
InSuper Mario 3D World, certain objects again can be carried, as well as other player characters in multiplayer mode.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
InSuper Mario Odyssey, a few objects such asseeds can be carried and thrown.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
Carrying returns as a basic action inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder. Every character can perform it, including Yoshi, marking one of the first times Yoshi has been able to carry objects in his arms.
Wario's Woods[edit]
In all versions ofWario's Woods, Toad must pick up and place creatures as part of the game's falling block puzzle theme.
Wario Land series[edit]
In theWario Land series, carrying is a common ability across each of the games. Both enemies and objects can be carried and thrown, and stunned enemies are picked up simply by walking into them. InWario Land: Super Mario Land 3 andVirtual Boy Wario Land, only large forms of Wario could carry enemies, though items like keys could be carried by any form. The former game also allowed Wario to summon his owncoins as projectile weapons or use them to pay tolls. InWario Land II and onwards, certain large enemies are considered "heavy" and weigh Wario down considerably to carry. InWario Land 3, Wario's throw can be upgraded to move in a straight horizontal line if charged up. InWario Land: Shake It!, carried enemies can be shaken to forcecoins from them.
Donkey Kong franchise[edit]
Donkey Kong series[edit]
Carrying is an important ability inDonkey Kong for theGame Boy andMario vs. Donkey Kong, with both games taking several gameplay cues fromSuper Mario Bros. 2. Both objects such asTrash Cans andkeys as well as various enemies can be picked up, carried, and thrown, which is done overhead.
Donkey Kong Country andDonkey Kong Land series[edit]
Carrying is a common ability in theDonkey Kong Country series andDonkey Kong Land series. Most carryable objects arebarrels, though certain other objects as well as some stunned enemies can also be carried. Theteam up is a move in some of the games where one character picks up the other to throw them.
Donkey Kong 64[edit]
Carrying occasionally appears inDonkey Kong 64, though carryable barrels are much rarer than in mostDonkey Kong games.Chunky Kong is also able to pick upboulders with relative ease due to his strength.
Donkey Kong Bananza[edit]
InDonkey Kong Bananza, carrying (referred to asPick Up) is one of Donkey Kong's default moves available to him in all forms, provided he is not riding aMine Cart. When next to a barrel, crate, or loose terrainchunk, the player can press to have Donkey Kong grab the object and hold it above his head. This does not restrict his ability to jump or climb unless he is carrying a chunk ofLiftoff Ore, nor does it restrict theOstrich Bananza's ability to Flutter or Glide. He is also put into the carrying state after either tearing off a chunk of terrain, or in the case of using theElephant Bananza, after pulling out a Trunk Chunk (as Tear Off is replaced with Inhale). In theTempest Layer, simply carrying an object above Donkey Kong protects him from the fiery rain in sublayer 901. In sublayer 902, it also protects him from lightning, which will either destroy the object or cause him to drop it (depending on its hardness) instead of damaging him.
While carrying something, there are a number of actions that can be performed with the object:
- Pressing
will have Donkey Kong drop the object.
- Pressing
will make him throw it, with a targeting reticle and over-the-shoulder view for aiming if held. He can throw even while spinning.
- Pressing one of the three punch buttons will have Donkey Kong swing the object in that direction to attack, even while jumping.
- Pressing
will begin aTurf Surf with the object. If pressed midair while channeling the Ostrich Bananza, Donkey Kong must be in the middle of an attack (otherwise, he will Flutter/Glide instead).
- Pressing the jump button midair will have Donkey KongChunk Jump off of the object to act as a midair jump.
- Jumping onto aZip line will have Donkey Kong ride it down by holding onto the object as it slides along the line.
- Spinning the
will have Donkey Kong spin around while holding the object in front of him. This cannot be done while carrying Liftoff Ore.
- There are two additional variations available if spinning while using theZebra Bananza; the player can hold
to use a stronger version of this move, known as the Spin Slam, if they have unlocked it with Skill Points. Alternatively, they can hold the Punch Down button to use the object like a drill and charge downward through terrain at a high speed.
- There are two additional variations available if spinning while using theZebra Bananza; the player can hold
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
Various items can be picked up and thrown or used as weapons in theSuper Smash Bros. series.Donkey Kong can also carry large objects such as crates and even other fighters when grabbed due to his strength.
Wario World[edit]
InWario World, Wario can pick up enemies and use them as projectiles or blunt weapons against other enemies. TheWild Swing-Ding has him twirl a grabbed enemy in a rapid circle.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]
InCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker, the movePick and Throw[1][2] hasCaptain Toad orToadette hold something above their head then throw it forward. Items are often insidePluck Patches, which the Pick portion of this move is used on to bring the object out.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]
Carrying objects appears as an ability inMario & Luigi: Brothership, often used for carrying giant plugs among other objects. This move is introduced onRumbla Island when Mario and Luigi carryWillma and her toolbox back to her home. Mario can pick up objects normally while Luigi picks them up and puts them down viaLuigi Logic. Mario and Luigi cannot jump while carrying objects, and must pass the object between each other when needing to jump over ledges.
